2104 Holiday Ale Fest Recap

Emily and I ventured out to the 2014 Holiday Ale Festival in Portland at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Thursday. We lucked out and made it into the festival and under the tents before the hours of torrential rain started. Once inside we enjoyed the day, making our way through a lot of great winter beers and some not so good winter beers, but as in previous years, we had fun.

rainy Pioneer Square x mas tree through the tents.

Top 5 Beers we sampled from the standard release beers :

  • McMenamins Edgefield Brewery:Lord of Misrule. So many great flavors in this Imperial Mocha Stout.  Lord of Misrule is a blend of coffee, cocoa, and habanero peppers aged in Rum Barrels.
  • Kells Brew Pub:Mic Stout AKA Boom Roaster. This Coffee Imperial Milk Stout was amazing...basically like drinking cold coffee with alcohlol. I would love to have a cup of this in the morning.
  • Lompoc Brewing Co:Pinot Barrel Aged Cheval de Trait Belge. We were drawn to this Belgian Strong Ale because it has a cool name - and the beer didn't let us down!  It's better a little warmer (no surprise there), and once it warmed up,  we got slight oak/barrel flavor, plums, and a nice maltiness.
  • Stone Brewing Co (Liberty Station):New Desecrator. Another great name, and yet what the hell is a Black Barley Wine? Turns out its basically Old Guardian with a twist to malt bill, which Stone refers to as "de-husked darkness." It's very smooth and hoppy like a black IPA with the nice alcohol presence and richness of a barley wine. It's an awesome combo - and it was Emily's first pour of the day, which set a high bar for the other beers.
  • Portland Brewing:2014 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. Just what is sounds like, this had nice bourbon notes, very smooth, and had a nice mouth feel. This was my first beer of the day.
Yes, we drank with Santa....even Santa checks out the beer list

That is just the top five beers we felt really stood out for us at the 2014 Holiday Ale Fest. We tasted over 30 beers from the standard beer lineup and then a bunch of  special beers (which cost two or three tickets instead of one like the standard beers.) The special beers were tapped just for the day, and included beers such as the 2011 Cascade Sang Noir and 2007 J.W. Lees Harvest Ale. Each day there will be some limited release surprises.

A couple of pointers for the folks who go today or tomorrow:
  • Don't feel bad pouring out a beer you don't like...these are heavy alcohol beers and you are tasting many of them, no need to drink the entire sample if you don't like it. We poured many beers out which gave us more room for others.
  •  Eat well before you go and then eat well during your sampling. Their are a couple of great food vendors at the event (like Bunk Sandwiches.)  Use them! You will need it to help consume the heavily alcohol. We sampled for 2 hours, ate a big pretzel, then went to the Yardhouse and consumed some heavy food - that helped a ton.
  • 21 & over only. Have fun, dress warmly and please drink responsibly.

Lompoc Pamplemousse In The House

On Tuesday freshpints.com got a nice little beer mail surprise from the fine folks at Lompoc Brewing.

Lompoc Brewings Pamplemousse Citrus IPA was released this summer as draft only addition to Lompoc's current lineup and is now being released in 22oz bottles as well . I'm looking forward to trying Pamplemousse out.

Let no risk go untaken: Lompoc Brewing celebrates scurvy
old sea captains with year-round Pamplemousse Citrus IPA

Press Release:
PORTLAND, Ore. – Earlier this summer, Lompoc Brewing released Pamplemouse Citrus IPA as part of its mainstay of beers, complementing its lineup of C-Note Imperial Pale Ale and Kick Axe Dry-Hopped Pale Ale.

Pamplemousse, French for grapefruit, is a deep golden, medium-bodied Citrus IPA that offers up refreshment that promises to satisfy all the senses. Four hop varieties – Centennial, Chinook, Meridian and Tettnang – along with real grapefruit juice, build a solid hop bitterness highlighted by citrus notes, both on the tongue and in the nose.

Pamplemousse is available on draft and in 22 oz. bottles at all Lompoc pubs as well as in various
establishments around the Northwest. The label design, by local brand builders Woody Adams and Andrew MacKenzie of Waamco, features a backdrop of a richly textured deep green tapestry with an intricate hop design; upon that sits a wall-mounted moose trophy sporting an armored helmet, reminiscent of the helmet in Lompoc’s logo. One of the helmet horns is skewering a half grapefruit.

The label design quickly prompted the creation of a mascot: Sir Pamplemousse, leader of the Kingdom of Lompoc. Sir Pamplemousse makes appearances at most Lompoc events and tastings, and randomly about town, sporting a helmet with moose antlers, a sword, a tunic, and clacking plastic grapefruits.

Sir Pamplemousse.

The legend of the Pamplemousse says that a scurvy old French sea captain was the first to discover grapefruit on the island of Barbados. Lompoc celebrates these scurvy captains and their discovery every damn day.

A Portland staple since 1996, Lompoc Brewing produces seven flavorful year-round beers, plus a ridiculous number of seasonals. You can find Lompoc in 22 oz bottles and on draft at locations around town, and at its five neighborhood pubs: Lompoc Tavern in NW Portland, Fifth Quadrant and Sidebar in North Portland, and Hedge House and Oaks Bottom in Southeast.

Craft Brewing comes to the High Desert Museum In Bend

If your from Bend or will be visiting Bend, make sure to check out a new exhibit at the High Desert Museum called Brewing Culture: The Craft of Beer. The exhibit opens January 17th and runs through Memorial Day weekend. See info below.

Craft Brewing comes to the High Desert Museum In Bend

New exhibit captures the history, culture, art and science of beer making.

Press Release:
Bend, OR —  Oregonians love their stouts, ales and IPAs, and no Oregon town has more brewpubs per capita than Bend. So it’s only natural that the High Desert Museum would create an exhibit about the craft of beer-making.

Brewing Culture: The Craft of Beer opens January 17th and will be on display through Memorial Day weekend.  Special brewing events, tastings, and beer-themed programs will be presented at the Museum throughout the 19-week run, starting with a big kick-off party on January 16th at 6:30 p.m.

The exhibit, conceived and designed by the High Desert Museum staff, will present the history of brewing, the ingredients used in craft beers, the process of brewing and the culture of the craft brewing industry.

“Needless to say, there’s a bustling beer culture in this town,” said Museum President Dana Whitelaw. “We thought it would be interesting to provide our own unique perspective on the craft.  I think the timing is perfect, and no one can do it quite like the High Desert Museum.  We will explore the history of beer in the West, the economic impact of the craft brewing business, the agricultural practices associated with brewing as well as the commendable practices of sustainability that we’re seeing from regional brewers.”

Curator Faith Powell has connected with craft brewers, hops farmers, writers, historians and home brewers while preparing the exhibit.
“Everyone I’ve talked with has been tremendously supportive,” Powell said. “It’s exciting to unpack the story of craft brewing and explore the impact that it’s having on our community and beyond. There are some very innovative and sustainable practices going on here… Filling your growler at a local pub is a great practice. It reduces waste by bringing the consumer directly to the product and it supports the local economy. It’s the essence of the local food movement. ”

About the Museum
The High Desert Museum is nationally acclaimed for inspiring stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the High Desert. It offers wildlife encounters, living history performances, Native American and Western art, music, nature trails, tours and classes.  It is located 10 minutes from downtown Bend on South Highway 97.

Dawn of the Red and Lux to Join Ninkasi’s Year-Round Offerings

Press Release:
EUGENE, Ore.—Nov. 20, 2014— Craft beer fans can look forward to a revamped Flagship Series lineup from Ninkasi Brewing Company starting January 2015, featuring new additions paired with steadfast favorites. Started in 2006 by Nikos Ridge and Jamie Floyd, the brewery first entered the Oregon craft beer scene with highly-hopped, Northwest India Pale Ales – beers that quickly made a name for the brewery. Since then, Ninkasi’s brewers have created a diverse offering of beer styles, including traditionally-inspired lagers; rich, complex stouts; ales brewed with experimental hops; and single-batch brews.

Released in 2014 for limited times, Lux, a German-Style Helles Lager, and Dawn of the Red, an India Red Ale, won the admiration of beer drinkers, giving the brewery reason enough to bring on the beers full-time to its year-round Flagship Series. In 2015, these beers will join the Flagship Series lineup alongside Total Domination IPA, Tricerahops Double IPA, Oatis Oatmeal Stout, and Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout with Vanilla.
“The 2015 Flagship Series offers something for every palate,” says Jamie Floyd, founding brewer and co-founder of Ninkasi. “With these six different beers you will find our very first recipes paired with beers that were created out of our desire to experiment and challenge ourselves as brewers.”
Total Domination, IPA
In 2006, founders Jamie Floyd and Nikos Ridge spent 18-hours brewing the very first batch of Ninkasi beer. The result? Total Domination IPA – a citrusy, floral IPA and a testament to Jamie’s love for Amarillo and Crystal hops. With a great malt backbone and fresh, citrus hop flavor, this beer finishes with a desire to return to this favored IPA again and again.
Enjoyed Since: 2006 | OG: 1067 | IBUs: 65 | ABV: 6.7%

Tricerahops, Double IPA
Offering a double-dose of everything loved in an IPA, Tricerahops has acquired a cult-like following since it was first brewed in 2007. Offering a big, earthy, floral hop hit, this beer is balanced by a generous amount of malt, making for a very drinkable double IPA.
Enjoyed Since: 2007 | OG: 1080 | IBUs: 100 | ABV: 8.0%

Dawn of the Red, India Red Ale (Available February – December 2015)
Originally released as a Rare & Delicious (R&D) Series beer, Dawn of the Red was brewed out of a want to brew an IRA using new hop varieties. Using El Dorado and Mosaic hops, this beer has an intoxicating tropical flavor. Dawn of the Red immediately became so popular that it was advanced to Ninkasi’s Special Release Series. Once again, the fanfare for this beer was so great, that making it a new addition to Ninkasi’s Flagship Series was an easy decision, available year-round starting in February 2015.
Enjoyed Since: 2014 | OG: 1072 | IBUs: 75 | ABV: 7.0%

Oatis, Oatmeal Stout
Brewed in 2007 as the second winter seasonal produced by Ninkasi, a love for Oatis developed right away. Named after a brewer’s dog, the popularity of Oatis promoted its move from a seasonal brew to a year-round offering in 2008. This stout has a dry finish with a significant amount of roasted flavor upfront. Its smooth mouthfeel comes from the use of rolled oats paired with a caramel complexity and coffee flavors.
Enjoyed Since: 2007 | OG: 1072 | IBUs: 50 | ABV: 7.0%

Vanilla Oatis, Oatmeal Stout with Vanilla
A more decadent take on Oatis, Vanilla Oatis features the addition of whole Madagascar vanilla beans. During the brewing process of Oatis, a portion of the beer is set aside in the brite tanks where hand-cut vanilla beans are added – the same process used to dry-hop a beer. This addition of pure vanilla acts as a natural sweetener, adding a more roasted flavor upfront followed by a vanilla finish.
Enjoyed Since: 2009 | OG: 1072 | IBUs: 50 | ABV: 7.0%

Lux, German-Style Helles Lager
Meaning light in German, Lux is Ninkasi’s lightest Flagship Series offering. Capturing the traditional and technical balance of the style, this Helles Lager has a toasty malt flavor balanced by the smallest amount of hops to bring about a quaffable drinkability. Allowed to ferment for a minimum of six-weeks, Ninkasi’s brewers accepted the challenge of producing a lager to the highest standards of balance.
Enjoyed Since: 2014 | OG: 1050 | IBUs: 20 | ABV: 5.0%

Cascade Brewing promotes Kevin Martin to lead blender

Brewery known for its NW style sour ales hires on a number of new employees, expands location
Press Release:PORTLAND, Ore. – Nov. 20, 2014 – Cascade Brewing announced today the promotion of Kevin Martin to lead blender. Martin, who has been with Cascade since early 2012 and has served as cellarmaster for the past two years, will now oversee putting all sour blends together, including stewarding the live barrels in the brewery’s popular Tap It Tuesday program.

“Kevin has been a huge asset to the blending program at Cascade since taking the reigns,” explained Ron Gansberg, brewmaster and blendmaster for the company. “We are excited to promote him to this position and allow him the freedom to further express his creativity.”As lead blender, Martin will work closely with Gansberg to develop components of each blend, overseeing ratios and percentages and providing creative input. He will also steward the blends for Tap It Tuesday, a weekly event at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House that features exclusive one-off limited blends from the cellar, with the contribution of Cascade personnel.

Martin got his start in the wine industry in 2007, working multiple harvests in a number of wineries. A homebrewer, he chose to segue into beer and attended the American Brewers Guild Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering program from 2011 to 2012. Originally from Lancaster, Penn., he came to Portland for its vibrant beer and wine culture, securing a brief internship with Laurelwood Brewing Co. before settling in at Cascade.Cascade has added a number of other recent new hires as well, including Mike Starzec as general manger of the Cascade Brewing Barrel House; Robby Roda as director of sales, distribution and marketing; and Chris Doggett as senior accountant.Starzec, who originally hails from Anchorage, Alaska, oversees all operations at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House at 939 SE Belmont St. He has worked as a restaurant manager in Portland for the last 15 years, with the last six years focused primarily in brewpubs. Most recently he spent five years managing the Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House.
Roda, a Portland native, oversees all accounts in the Northwest, as well as acting as the liaison with Cascade’s national distributors and helping grow the brand. He most recently worked in sales with Incline Beverages, a craft beer distributor in Southern Calif. He has also worked with a number of beer bars and breweries in Calif., including The Bottle Room in Whittier, Monkish Brewing In Torrance and Golden Road Brewery in Los Angeles.

Doggett is a native Oregonian who graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Doggett manages all in-house accounting, and is also overseeing the company’s transition to new ERP software. He has previously worked at Xerox and SDRI.
Cascade Brewery, which makes a number of traditional style ales but is known worldwide for its NW sour style beers, has recently expanded into a 23,000 square foot warehouse in SW Portland that will headquarter all of its blending, aging, packaging and distribution. The Cascade Blending House currently holds 1,300 barrels filled with its sour beer, plus an additional nine foudres (giant wooden barrels that typically hold around 1,800 gallons of beer). The company is in the process of moving all operations out of the Cascade Brewing Barrel House; in the near future, it will expand that space into a larger pub and tasting room.About Cascade BrewingEstablished in 1998, Cascade Brewing is a pioneer of the NW style sour beer movement. Under the ownership of Art Larrance and the direction of brewmaster Ron Gansberg, the Portland, Ore. brewery eschewed the “hops arms race” of the Northwest and instead chose to focus on sour ales, employing local fruit and barrels from the region. Today they have grown from several oak wine barrels to more than 1,300. They also produce a number of non-sour beers in their SW Portland brewery. Cascade Brewing has two pubs, the Raccoon Lodge and Brew Pub in SW Portland (www.raclodge.com) and the Cascade Brewing Barrel House in SE Portland (www.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com). The brewery currently distributes its bottled sour beers in Oregon, Washington, California, Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York.  For more information, visit www.cascadebrewing.com.

Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise Released Today

Press Release:
ESCONDIDO, CA (Nov. 17, 2014) – Beer enthusiasts, prepare for a mind- and palate-defying experience that may change some of your preconceived notions about beer. The latest Stochasticity Project release will challenge the assumption that pale-colored ales are modest in body, or that only dark-hued beers can exhibit roasty, chocolaty and rich malty notes. Beginning today, Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise, a so-called imperial golden stout brewed with coffee beans, cocoa and coffee beans (not a typo), will start arriving in 22-ounce bottles and on draft to select markets nationwide.

The inspiration for this beer was twofold: First, after brewing Stone 11th Anniversary Ale (a black IPA now known as Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA) in 2007, it was joked that Stone should brew a golden stout. Then, on April Fool's Day 2010, Stone CEO and Co-founder Greg Koch and BrewDog Co-founder James Watt teased fans with a fictional, oxymoronic collaboration beer that was pale in color but had all the classic flavors of an imperial stout, calling it BrewDog/Stone Luciferin Golden Imperial Stout. Having tucked away the concept for that far-fetched beer, Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele finally decided to make it a reality by developing a pilot batch recipe featuring ingredients that contributed roasty flavors and a pale color.

“To achieve the qualities of a stout, we relied on our prior experience brewing with coffee to pull flavors from the beans without affecting the hue of the beer,” explains Steele. “As the beer warms and opens up, the chocolate adds another level of complexity and helps build the traditional flavors typically associated with dark beers. It’s been really fun to see a prank with questionable viability become a reality.”

To give the beer the silky-smooth mouthfeel that is often associated with stouts, flaked oats were added to the grain bill along with Carapils, English amber and pale malts, which lent the beer a golden-colored hue. Sheets of cocoa from ChocoVivo were added in the whirlpool along with Ryan Bros Coffee, with an additional small amount of coffee added post-fermentation to replicate the typical deep, roasty, chocolaty character found in stouts. Giving off a mild spice flavor and strong bitterness, both Liberty and Nugget hops offer a perfect balance to the overall robust malt flavors. Upon first sip, fans will savor all the rich complexity of a stout presented in the unexpected form of a brilliant golden ale.

Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise is ready to be enjoyed now or may be properly cellared for several months or even years. Over time, the malt qualities will evolve and give way to richer cocoa and coffee flavors. Regardless of when the beer is enjoyed, fans will learn to not judge beer by its color... at least not this one.
