Victory Reveals Seven Secrets of Golden Monkey & Invites Fans to Vote for Favorite Monkey Tale Finalist

Downingtown, PA, October 18, 2016 – Golden Monkey fans have supported, and love, the all-seeing, all-knowing, mystically spirited, metallic simian since its introduction in 1997 and have made it Victory Brewing Company’s number one selling brand ever since. In honor of the mystical monkey, Victory invites fans to vote for finalists in the ‘Monkey Tales’ contest at, choosing creative or funny anecdotes, enlightening observations or extraordinary memories relating to the enjoyment of Golden Monkey. Appropriately, the history of the Golden Monkey traces back to a celebratory occasion when Ron Barchet, Co-Founder and Brewmaster of Victory Brewing Company, and his wife were expecting their third child and wanted a great beer to cheer the occasion. It seemed only appropriate that Victory would rise to the occasion and so the smooth Belgian-style tripel, Golden Monkey, was born. 

Below Ron Barchet reveals seven secrets of the Golden Monkey:

1. It had a name before it was born
Victory Co-Founder and Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski, conjured up the Golden Monkey name long before it was brewed. Usually, it’s the other way around: marry the name with the beer. “But Bill really cracks up when he sees monkeys, and somehow he came up with this clever and strange name—and it just fit,” Ron added.

2. Perfection pursued for 10 years
Ron tinkered with the recipe continuously for about 10 years for it to become the Monkey you know and love. Turns out, the original yeast from Belgium was good, but it wasn’t reliable, resulting in too much sweetness. In 2004, Ron was in Belgium and got his hands on one of his favorite brews, and that yeast became the inspiration for Golden Monkey. “That yeast worked so well to maintain flavor and make it a dryer, less sweet beer, just as I’d suspected,” Ron said. “We continued to work on it and since around 2008, the formula’s been the same.”

3. The Monkey and the Vine are just fine 
Wine enthusiasts who claim not to like beer tend to enjoy Golden Monkey. Ron gives credit to one of their philosophies as brewers: drinkability. “We’re attenuating the beers (which is the percentage that measures the conversion of sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide by the fermentation process), so there’s not a lot of sweetness and carbs left,” Ron explained. “Most have a final gravity on the low side because most of the sugars have been fermented out. That makes for an easy drinking beer.”

4. It takes a really big tank to hold the Monkey 
Golden Monkey is a bold beer coming in at 9.5% ABV. Thanks to the way it ferments the yeast—very vigorously—Victory had to purchase tanks to accommodate the 25–30 feet of foam. “That’s about 20 percent bigger than we need for other beers,” Ron laughed. “And that nets the same amount of beer. Completely worth it.”

5. Increase in population since the birth of the Monkey
Legend has it that the enjoyment of Golden Monkey has lead to an increase in population. Ron had some fun with math to see if he could ballpark Monkey-related births. “Even if just 1 out of 100,000 bottles results in a bundle of joy, that’s more than 100 births a year!” Consume The Monkey responsibly.

6. The Monkey is omni-present
Golden Monkey is available year-round in three different formats and on tap including 12 oz. bottles, 12 oz. cans and 750 ml caged and corked bottles. It’s on draft at Victory’s three brewpubs—Downingtown, Parkersburg and Kennett Square—and at fine establishments near you. “We decided to can Golden Monkey because it’s really popular down south. It’s sold in convenience stores, and they prefer cans to stock their shelves. It’s turned out to be a really popular way to drink The Monkey—perfect for camping and other outdoor activities.”
7. The Monkey lives on and on and on…

Although the recipe has remained virtually the same since 2008, Victory finds new ways to experiment with Golden Monkey. In 2013, the golden elixir was aged in white wine barrels for three months and introduced as White Monkey. A seasonal iteration, Sour Monkey, is a sour Brett tripel, available in 750 ml caged and corked bottles. It’s a tasteful, tart twist with a citrus-laden tang. “We love sours, and this was a natural match,” Ron noted. “It brings a tart acidity and is an interesting combo.”

Coronado Brewing Goes Tropical with Release of Guava Islander IPA

Coronado Brewing Company is excited to announce a tropical twist to its core lineup, with the addition of Guava Islander IPA. Coronado Brewing is no stranger to brewing with fruit-the company was an early pioneer with its bestselling Orange Ave. Wit, as well as the cult-favorite seasonal, Berry the Hatchet. "Coronado has a rich history of brewing with fruit," says Brandon Richards, COO, Coronado Brewing Company. Guava Islander is a tropical spin on the company's 2014 World Beer Cup gold-medal winning Islander IPA. Oskar Blues Brewery Sponsors Pink Boots Society Tour to Germany

Brewery Behind First Craft Beer-in-a-Can Partners on Tour to Assist, Inspire, & Encourage Women Beer Professionals

LONGMONT, CO, BREVARD, NC & AUSTIN, TX- The craft beer-in-a-can pioneers' do-goodery goes international in sponsoring the Pink Boots Society's (PBS) Cultural Emersion Tour to Gem├╝tlichkeit, Germany, the Heart of Bavaria for the Beer, Bratwurst and Beyond Tour from October 14 to 22, 2016. Sponsorships from Oskar Blues, Boston Beer Company and Sierra Nevada, among others, allowed 10 women to receive full scholarships for the program and provide them with invaluable opportunities to further their education within the craft beer industry.
Tristan Chappell, Assistant Cellar Manager at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard will be joining the adventure to learn about German brewing practices, tour female owned & operated breweries and network with other women in the beer industry.
"In an industry primarily dominated by men it is important to find a network of strong women to lean on for support and encouragement," said Chappell. "The Pink Boots Society has played a big role in my professional success and I am looking forward to immersing myself in the different brewing processes and practices in Germany and spreading the Oskar Blues gospel overseas."
Pink Boots Society is an international nonprofit that works to inspire, encourage, educate and help women succeed in the craft beer industry. This insider's tour begins in Frankfurt, and winds through idyllic Bavaria and Franconia with stops along the way at small family-owned breweries, established breweries, some "radical" breweries, hops farms, and many other places of interest to beer lovers, especially those with an interest in southern German beer culture beyond Oktoberfest.
"When the opportunity came our way, I knew immediately it was something that we wanted to be involved in," stated Diana Ralston, Director of Sponsorships at Oskar Blues Brewery. "With only 18 percent of our industry represented by women, we need to do what we can to support and educate those of us who are involved and continue to provide unique opportunities for growth."
Tristan has been a member of the Brevard team since it opened its doors in 2012. While her background was in blacksmithing and metal fabrication, after working in the taproom at Oskar Blues she developed a passion for craft beer and was given the opportunity to pursue her dream of being involved in its production. Tristan spent her days off learning the brew process and in less than a year of working at Oskar Blues, she moved her way up from beer tender to Assistant Brewer in the cellar.
"There's no one more deserving or better to send on this trip than Tristan," said Dale Katechis, soul founder of Oskar Blues Brewery. "She's been kicking ass for our North Carolina team since day one and her passion for life and all things craft beer is infectious."

Loowit Brewing Celebrates 4th Anniversary

Fort George Brewing To Release A Limited Draft Only Batch Of The Popular Java the Hop

One of the more often requested Fort George seasonals, Java the Hop returns to Pacific Northwest taps starting October 20th. This unique IPA fuses two of the region’s most enjoyable pastimes sipping great coffee and drinking hoppy beer. And when you’re brewing with a single hop + single bean, that satisfaction comes down to selection.
The Dark
From the beginning, Java the Hop has been a joint collaboration with Portland’s Coava Coffee Roasters. Owner Matt Higgins and his crew are expert tasters with vast experience hand-selecting beans from all over the world. For this batch they chose Los Nacientes, a Costa Rican coffee with notes of chocolate, nuts, and subtle fruit acidity. These were added to the secondary fermenter within 48 hours of roasting, to ensure maximum exposure to the aroma compounds.
“The whole beans float freely in the tank,” explains Fort George brewer Jason Palmberg. “We use something like a pool skimmer the brewery rigged up to fish them back out. It can be a little tedious. And from there the beans head to a local farm for composting.”
The Light
This year’s Java the Hop was brewed using Mosaic hops. An offshoot of Simcoes, Mosaics retain some of that strong, piney aroma from the mother plant, merged with juicy, tropical fruit traits.
“The last two Java the Hops used coffee that created a fruit forward nose,” Head Brewer Michal Frankowicz adds. “This time we wanted a bolder coffee to balance out all of the mango and citrus already present in the Mosaics.”
The Beer
Mornings are for coffee, evenings are for beer, Java the Hop is timeless. A minimal malt bill focuses your powers on the pairing - radiant and light, with huge coffee aromatics, a hint of chocolate roast (but not on the dark side), and a tropical hop finish. No mind tricks, just simple complexity.
Be on the lookout for more draft-only offerings from Fort George heading into 2017. This batch of Java the Hop is limited. Ask your favorite northwest pub to put it on tap while they can. May the Fort be with you.

Reuben’s Brews Takes Home Gold at the Great American Beer Festival

Reuben’s Brews Gose, a traditional German sour ale, has taken gold for the second year in a row at the Great American Beer Festival. This crisp, refreshing and vibrant beer leads a category that is growing in popularity, with category entries at the festival nearly doubling since 2014 (141 entries in 2016). The Seattle brewery’s Gose edged out competitors from across the country with its lemon notes and vibrant salinity.
Earlier this year, Reuben’s Brews announced the year-round availability of Gose in cans, which suits this beer perfectly with its sessionability, lower ABV and refreshing tartness. GoodLife Brewing Announces Beer No. 3 in “Sustainable Session Series” Mountain Rescue Session Ale

GoodLife Brewing brewed is making its return. It’s the same recipe, with the same great taste and starting mid-October, Mountain Rescue Session Ale is Beer No.3 in the “Sustainable Session Series.”  Whether you’re an over planner or under planner, experienced or not, bad situations can happen quick when you’re in the outdoors and that’s why we are thankful to have talented Search and Rescue teams available to us.

Out here in Bend and beyond, getting the GoodLife means embracing the big mountain.  But sometimes the mountain bucks back, and majestic beauty can instantly turn really hairy.  When it hits the fan, the best at saving you is search and rescue.  This Mountain Rescue Session Ale honors those highland heroes everywhere, the rugged volunteers who brave wilderness to get us.  So we’re chipping in some sales to support local life-saving crews.  Because nature plays rough-always safety first, be grateful for backup and let the GoodLife shine.  GoodLife Brewing’s marketing director, Chris Nelson, said, “I have a few close friends that have been saved by Search and Rescue.  The fact that these teams leave families at home to come out and rescue strangers in sometimes nasty weather and locations for virtually no pay, no accolades, and knowing that their team barely has enough resources to safely save people, it made GoodLife want to do our part and help them out.”  It’s typical for Search and Rescue teams to work between 200-500 hours per year, on top of their normal jobs, so that’s why we want to help raise awareness because Search and Rescue lives matter.

With an aroma that balances a floral note with a slight malt backbone, Mountain Rescue Session Ale’s herbal notes dominate the hop flavor and balances perfectly with the malt forward base of the beer. 

Mountain Rescue will be available in 6-pack cans and draft (1/6 BBLS and ½ BBLS) between Oct. 2016 and Feb. 2017 with distribution in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Vermont.

Redhook Releasing 32nd Version of Popular Seasonal Winterhook Dark Ale

SEATTLE, Wash. – October 17, 2016 – Redhook Brewery is celebrating the arrival of the winter season with the release of Winterhook, the brewery’s award-winning dark ale. Brewed annually since 1984, Winterhook won the bronze medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival in the American-Style Amber/Red Ale category and continues to be a Redhook favorite. Perfect for cooler months, this legendary brew keeps it fresh with a new recipe every year.  This year’s version, the 32nd incarnation of Winterhook, boasts a trio of hops that make for a hoppier version of the winter favorite.

Winterhook Dark Ale
Winterhook is an ever-evolving winter ale brewed since 1984. Crafted with a mix of malts and hops, each yearly edition of Winterhook is one-of-a-kind. The 2016 version has a healthy dose of Munich malt and includes flaked oats for a creamier mouthfeel. The malt is balanced with the addition of Simcoe, Centennial and Chinook hops.
