Ecliptic Brewing + Reuben’s Brews Cosmic Collaboration

Courtesy of Ecliptic Brewing Co
Portland, Oregon. Earth. (March 13)- Ecliptic Brewing’s Cosmic Collaboration Series has always featured an exciting line-up of beers with everything from an IPA brewed with Pinot Noir juice to a Session Barleywine.  And the fun doesn’t stop now. Ecliptic Brewing has teamed up with Reuben’s Brews out of Seattle, Washington for their first Cosmic Collaboration of 2018.

“As our team went through this year’s planning, we found that Reuben’s Brews was on everyone’s Cosmic Collab wish list,” said Owner and Brewmaster of Ecliptic, John Harris. “We were lucky enough to make it happen and when working with Adam Robbings (Co-Founder and Brewmaster of Reuben’s) on the brew we decided to go with a hazy beer but play with it a bit.” explained Harris.

In a time where hazy beers are found in almost every bar and bottle shop in the northwest, seeing how breweries ‘play’ with or further experiment with the style is something to look forward to.  Named after a reddish star hidden in the fur of Lepus the hare, Crimson Star is a Hazy Double IPA brewed with pomegranate and guava and dry hopped with Citra, Azacca, Ekuanot, and Motueka hops.

Alex Kuyper Wins Reuben’s Brews Second Annual Hop Idol Homebrew Contest

Courtesy of Rueben's Brews
Competition triples in size in its second year; winning beer will be brewed for Pacific Northwest distribution

SEATTLE, Wash. (March 8, 2018) – Reuben’s Brews has named the 2018 winner of its second annual “Hop Idol” Homebrew Contest: Alex Kuyper. Beating out 116 total entries, Kuyper’s “Dwayne IPA” took home the title. This hazy Northeast style IPA will now be brewed at Reuben’s Brews in Seattle and distributed in Pacific Northwest region.

“This year’s contest was fiercely competitive as our judging panel received amazing home brews from not only Washington and Oregon, but also from as far away as Alabama and Wisconsin,” said Adam Robbings, co-founder and brewmaster. “Alex’s winning creation has a fruit-forward nose with notes of sage, floral, jasmine, a juicy body and balanced bitterness. It will be fun to make this at the brewery alongside Alex and share it with the craft beer community.”

Hop Idol is a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) certified homebrew competition. All entries were blind tasted and scored against the BJCP style guidelines, focusing on hoppy styles. The judging panel included BJCP-certified beer judges, Reuben’s team members, some of Reuben’s wholesale customers and representatives from Reuben’s distributors.

In addition to brewing “Dwayne IPA” with the Reuben’s team at their brewery in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, Alex’s beer will be distributed throughout the Northwest and will be entered in the Washington Beer Awards Pro-Am competition as well as the Great American Beer Festival. The distributed brew will available on tap in the Reuben’s taproom and in bottles starting in May.

Second place honors went to Tim Mattran for his “Opposite Saisons”, and third place was taken by the overall winner, Alex Kuyper for his “Carl Double IPA.”

“It takes time, effort and commitment to brew beer and send it out for a contest like this, and we’d like to thank everyone who shared their brews with us,” said Robbings. “This annual contest goes back to how I got started in brewing and it is close to my heart. Homebrewers out there are doing great work and we hope this contest draws some attention to that.”

Reuben’s Brews Growth Rate Eclipses Top Brands in Washington State

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
Continued growth spurs new hires for taproom and brewing team

SEATTLE, August 24, 2017 – Reuben’s Brews in Seattle’s Ballard District is reporting growth across the board with an increase in production, recent expansions and new hires.

Highlights 2017 for the brewery include:

  • Industry-leading growth in Washington State. In IRI data for the six months ending 6/30/17, Reuben's Brews was growing at 104 percent in dollar sales - the highest growth rate among the top 30 brands in Washington.
  • Production is on track to increase by more than 50 percent compared to 2016.
  • A Pacific Northwest distribution footprint has been built by adding Northern Oregon, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.
  • The brewery has continued to win awards for its brews, with more than 30 awards received in 2017 so far.
  • Numerous new beers have been brewed, including Reuben’s Crush Series, the release of Pilsner in cans, and the launch of the annual Hop Idol Pro-Am competition and release.

Given all of this, Reuben's Brews needed to bolster its existing staff by adding key leadership positions and promotions to add strength and depth to its already amazing team.

  • Grace Robbings, Co-Founder: Although she’s always had a hand in things behind the scenes, Grace Kim Robbings (aka Reuben’s Mama), officially joined the team earlier this summer. She left her teaching position at Bellevue College to focus more on the business side of the brewery. She’s managing the taproom and administrative teams, running communications, and building a sustainability program at the brewery. She will continue her work on tax compliance and running the brewery’s charitable programs, in particular the Thank You Thursday program

  • James McDermet, Head Brewer: James joined the company last April and came to Reuben’s from Fremont Brewing. He has been using his experience at a fast-growing brewery to help Reuben’s Brews’ continued growth with a focus on brewing the highest-quality beers. Leading production, he’s working closely with co-founder Adam Robbings, along with Mike Pfeiffer and the rest of the brewing team.
  • Mike Pfeiffer, Production Manager: As the brewery has grown Mike’s role has also grown. Mike helped open the brewery – he literally built large parts of the original brewery, he now regularly brews production batches while also managing the production schedule to ensure the right beers are brewed and packaged in the right format. Not an easy task with five distributors and 23 fermenters!

  • Thor Stoddard, New Beer Manager: Previously the taproom manager, Thor now helps founder Adam Robbings manage new beers, particularly with the barrel program and the development of the sour and brett program. Thor has a hand in the brewing process, brewing small batch beers and production size batches, while also experimenting with infusions and the cask program.

In addition to these leadership changes, Reuben’s has further strengthened its taproom team and brewery team. Regulars to the taproom may have noticed some new faces with team members Dave Patania, Jess Keller, Matt Ellis and Ashley Hermosillo. Many of these new hires were (and still are) regular customers of the taproom, they’ve just shifted roles!  And in the brewery, Khris Lloyd recently joined in a cellar role, and Nigel Lassiter has joined part time too.

Award-winning Reuben’s Brews Expanding Distrubution

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
SEATTLE, Wash. (Feb. 28, 2017) Starting this summer, Beer lovers in Portland, Vancouver WA, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho will be in for a real treat as the award-winningest brewery in Washington state, Reuben’s Brews, expands distribution.

“For the last couple of years, people have been asking us when our beers will be available outside of Western Washington, particularly in Eastern Washington and Portland,” says Robbings. “We believe we have to earn the right to be called a Pacific Northwest brewery, and we hope that the quality of our beers - underlined by our beers’ recognition both nationally and internationally - will encourage beer lovers throughout the region to try and enjoy our brews.”

The brewery signed on with two new distributors: Maletis Beverage in Portland, Oregon will distribute Reuben’s Brews to the greater Portland area, including Vancouver, Washington; and Spokane-based Click Distributing East will cover Eastern Washington. Beers are expected to hit taps and store shelves in May and June with a detailed release schedule to follow.

Reuben’s Brews has garnered more than 100 medals in beer competitions since opening in 2012, including Gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup and has already added eight more medals for its beers since the start of the year. The brewery was second place overall at the Best of Craft Beer Awards after winning four medals, the brewery won three Best of the Northwest awards at the US Beer Tasting Championships, and Crikey IPA was named as a winner at the Good Food Awards.

In 2016, the brewery more than doubled its production, making expansion outside of its hometown of Seattle possible. The brewery recently signed a lease on another small warehouse in the brewery’s Ballard neighborhood. This one will have a very specific use – building on their award-winning sour program.

“We decided to wait until we had a separate facility before commencing barrel aged sours,” says Robbings. “We’re excited to build on our GABF Gold Medal winning Gose with new brett and barrel-aged sours in the coming months and years.”

SEATTLE’S REUBEN’S BREWS ANNOUNCES “HOP IDOL” HOMEBREW CONTEST

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
SEATTLE, Wash. (Nov. 7, 2016) In homage to its roots, Seattle’s award-winning Reuben’s Brews is launching the “Hop Idol” Homebrew Contest. Do you think your beer has what it takes to be the next great homebrew?

“Homebrewing is where it started for us,” says Adam Robbings, Co-Founder and Head Brewer of Reuben’s Brews. “Homebrewing competitions gave me the confidence to take a chance at opening a brewery. We’ve wanted to start a competition like this for some time as a way to try new beers, support the homebrew community, all while having a lot of fun!”

The winner will receive $250 and get to brew their beer with the Reuben’s Brews team at their brewery in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The finished brew will available on tap in the Reuben’s taproom and see some distribution around the Pacific Northwest. It is also planned to be entered in the Pro-Am category at one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the country – the Great American Beer Festival (GABF).

How will they choose a winning beer? Like a former reality show with a similar name, the judging will be led by a Brit with a high standard of excellence – U.K native Robbings.

“This will be a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) certified homebrew competition,” says Robbings. “All entries will be judged against the BJCP style guidelines, focusing on hoppy styles. We love hoppy beers and think it will be fun to focus on that category!”

Here are a few of the basic rules for entry:
  • Contestants may submit up to five different beers. Entry forms and recipes are required for each submission.
  • There is a $5 entry fee for each beer submitted. Make checks payable to “Reuben’s Brews LLC.” All entry fees will be donated to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
  • Beers must be submitted between Monday, January 16 and Thursday, January 19, 2017. Late entries cannot be accepted.
  • The competition judging will be held on Saturday, January 21 and may continue through Saturday, January 28. We anticipate naming the winner on Monday, January 30.

Reuben’s Brews Takes Home Gold at the Great American Beer Festival

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
Seattle brewery’s Gose wins for second year in a row
Seattle, WA -
Reuben’s Brews Gose, a traditional German sour ale, has taken gold for the second year in a row at the Great American Beer Festival. This crisp, refreshing and vibrant beer leads a category that is growing in popularity, with category entries at the festival nearly doubling since 2014 (141 entries in 2016). The Seattle brewery’s Gose edged out competitors from across the country with its lemon notes and vibrant salinity.
Earlier this year, Reuben’s Brews announced the year-round availability of Gose in cans, which suits this beer perfectly with its sessionability, lower ABV and refreshing tartness. Fans are enthusiastic about enjoying this brew in all seasons in portable, outdoor friendly cans in the great Pacific Northwest playground.

Reuben’s Brews Releases Four Very Different Beers Just in Time for Fall

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
SEATTLE, Wash. (Aug. 24, 2016)  The days are getting shorter and summer is slowly waning. But don’t fret! Over the next few weeks, Reuben’s Brews is releasing four beers to help ease you into fall.

On August 25th, Roasted Rye IPA will hit shelves for the first time ever in 12oz cans.

“This is the beer that started it all for us,” says Adam Robbings, Co-Founder and Head Brewer of Reuben’s Brews. “The first recognition I ever won as a home brewer was for the Roasted Rye IPA back in 2010. It’s still one of my favorites and it reminds me of how far we’ve come in those six years, since the days of brewing in my garage.”

Coming in at 7% ABV and 80 IBUs, Roasted Rye IPA has citrus and tangerine in the nose, supported by chocolate, roast and caramel notes. It’s like an India pale ale and a winter warmer in one tasty brew!  22oz bottles and draft availability will follow as we get into fall.

Also on the beer horizon:

·   Imperial Pumpkin: This fall favorite will be available in 22oz bottles beginning Sept. 1. Soft, rich malt provides a showcase for pumpkin supported by subtle nuttiness. Brewed with pumpkin, brown sugar and spices, it’s like fall in a glass! 8.7% ABV and 22 IBUs

·  Life on Mars: After a successful debut last fall, this award-winning imperial pale ale is back! Earthlings can find it in 22oz bottles beginning Sept. 8. A deep red brew with a bright nose of citrus, tangerine and pine supported by a medium-full body and smooth caramel notes. At 8.2% ABV and 80 IBU, it’s just what the Lunar Lander ordered!

·  Amarillo Fresh Hop: It’s what hop heads wait for! Once a year, we head over to Yakima, Wash. to select fresh hops directly from the farm. We then bring them right back to the brewery and brew with them right away. This beer is driven by the intense notes of fresh-cut grass the can only come from using fresh hops. Amarillo hops provide a deep orange flavor profile with background notes of lemon zest. The exact release date will depend on when the hops are ready for harvest, but we’re estimating late-September.

Reuben's Brews Surpasses 100-Medal Mark After Winning 10 Medals in June

Photo: Adam Robbings and Charlie Papazian 2016 World Beer Cup.

SEATTLE, Wash. (June 28, 2016The folks at Reuben’s Brews are going to need to open up a little more wall space. The brewery, located in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, took home 10 medals from two competitions this month, pushing their total number of medals earned since opening in 2012 past 100.

“Winning our 100th medal is quite a milestone for a small brewery to hit,” says Adam Robbings, co-founder and head brewer of Reuben’s Brews. “When you’re a new brewery, competitions are a good way to get your name out there and you get to see how your beers stack up against others locally and nationally. It gives you some independent validation that you’re on the right track. We learn a lot about what trends are out there and what others are doing and it pushes us to keep brewing the best beer we can.”

At the North American Beer Awards on June 3, Reuben’s Brews took home four medals: silver for Air of the Night Baltic Porter and Foreign Export Stout, and bronze for Pilsner and Seattle Milk Stout.

Then on June 18, the brewery won six medals at the Washington Beer Awards: gold for Pilsner, silver for Kolsch and Triumvirate, and bronze for Robust Porter, Lilywhite Wit and Crikey IPA.

“We’ve come a long way in just under four years,” says Robbings. “Knowing that people like what you do is incredibly gratifying and I really appreciate all of the support we’ve gotten from the community. We wouldn’t be here without it!”

Reuben’s Brews Takes Home Gold at the 2016 World Beer Cup

Reuben’s Brews took home a gold award at the World Beer Cup last week, one of the biggest beer competitions in the world with 6,500 total entries. Reuben's Brews Releases Daily Pale, Official Beer Of Seattle Beer Week, In Cans Today

Courtesy of Reuben's Brews
SEATTLE, Wash. (April 11, 2016) Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Get your first taste of the Daily Pale from Reuben's Brews!

Brewed as the official beer of the 2016 Seattle Beer Week, the Daily Pale will make its debut in 12oz cans on April 11 at the Reuben's Brews taproom and in stores throughout the Seattle area. It won’t be on tap however until after the official ceremony to kick off Seattle Beer Week on May 12 in Reuben’s taproom.
"It was a great honor to be asked to brew the official beer of Seattle Beer Week," says Adam Robbings, Co-founder and Head Brewer of Reuben's Brews. "We think beer lovers will find that popping open a can of the Daily Pale will be a nice precursor to one of the top beer weeks in the country, featuring dozens of Seattle area breweries and hundreds of fun beer events."

When you enjoy this beer, you’ll not only be supporting a small local brewery but also our wonderful city. As a little thank you to the city they love so much, Reuben’s Brews is donating one percent of the proceeds from Daily Pale to the Seattle Parks Foundation and the Green Seattle Partnership for reforestation of urban forests.

Daily Pale is a hop-forward IPA with lower ABV. Using lots of Citra, Galaxy and Centennial hops, its bright aroma and flavor profile is driven by passionfruit, peach and citrus with a juicy malt backbone to support the waves of hops. At 4.9 percent ABV and 55 IBU, it is thirst quenching, balanced and focused on hop flavor and aroma, with a crisp, clean finish.

The name “Daily Pale” provides a connection with the daily newspaper and goes back to the idea that you can enjoy this beer every day given its lower alcohol level. It’s also a pun on pail, which harkens back to the 1800s when people would get their daily beer in open metal pails (or “growlers”) from their local tavern.

Reuben's Brews And Bale Breaker To Release CollaBEERation On March 22

Courtesy of Reuben's Brew
Craft breweries from Seattle and Yakima team up to brew an India Pale Lager

SEATTLE, Wash. (March 17, 2016) – It’s east of the Cascades meets west on the brew deck! Last month, Yakima’s Bale Breaker Brewing Company traveled to Seattle’s Reuben’s Brews to create brewing magic. The result? CollaBEERation India Pale Lager (IPL), which makes its debut on Tuesday, March 22 in the Reuben’s Brews taproom at 5010 14th Ave NW in Seattle.

“I stopped by Bale Breaker’s taproom while I was in Yakima last year during hop harvest,” says Adam Robbings, Co-Founder and Head Brewer of Reuben’s Brews. “After chatting with two of Bale Breaker’s co-founders, Meghann Quinn and Kevin Smith, whie drinking their delicious beers, we decided we should brew a beer together. It’s really exciting to collaborate with their awesome team!”

When it came to deciding what to brew, they knew that whatever style they chose should showcase the hops that grow so plentifully in eastern Washington. After some discussion, they agreed to an IPL, which neither brewery had made before.

“We were pumped to have the chance to brew with Adam and his team at Reuben’s Brews, and especially to try a new style that we had never had a chance to brew before at Bale Breaker,” said Quinn.  “Since we’re located on a hop farm, we love showcasing the hops that the Yakima Valley has to offer in our beer.  Pairing our style with the house lager yeast at Reuben’s Brews is a CollaBEERation that we were excited to be a part of!”

An India Pale Lager (IPL) is similar to an India Pale Ale (IPA) except that IPLs use lager yeast which adds a smooth crisp body to the beer, and produces less esters which allow the hops to shine through brightly. IPAs use ale yeasts.

CollaBEERation pairs Reuben’s Brews’ house lager yeast strain with a light pilsner malt base and plenty of hops! The brew features Citra, Mosaic, and the experimental hop HBC344, which features berry notes that will work well with the Mosaic and lager character. It was dry hopped multiple times with Citra, Azacca and more Mosaic hops. In all, this beer contains more than 4 pounds of hops per barrel and exudes tropical fruit, citrus and pineapple notes.

The two breweries will be collaborating to release the beer as well. Representatives from Bale Breaker will travel to the Reuben’s taproom in Seattle for the March 22 release party, and the team from Reuben’s will travel to Yakima to return the favor at the Bale Breaker release on March 24. Colla-BEER-ation will be available on tap and in 22oz bottles at each release party. Bottles will also be available in limited distribution around the state.

About Bale Breaker Brewing CompanyBale Breaker Brewing Company is the newest craft brewery to open in the heart of our nation’s hop country, but while the brewery is new on the scene, the family behind the beer is not. The great-grandparents of owners Patrick Smith, Meghann Quinn, and Kevin Smith first planted hops in the Yakima Valley in 1932, the year before Prohibition ended. Now, 82 years later, their love of hops and passion for craft beer has led them to where they are today – in the midst of running a 30-barrel production brewery and taproom surrounded by their family’s hop fields, just down the road from where they were born and raised.
