Hopworks Collaborates On Second B-Side Project With New Belgium

Portland, Oregon, July 24, 2015 - Hopworks Urban Brewery and New Belgium Brewing are getting the band back together to create their second collaboration beer, Organic B-Side EP. This Peach Sour Ale is being brewed at Hopworks with members from both companies’ brewing teams and will be released at a Rooftop Party at Revolution Hall in Portland on August 19.

The name B-Side EP celebrates the B Corp Certified status earned by both sustainably-minded breweries as well as their love of bicycles and bike culture.

B-Side EP is a kettle soured ale made by brewing the wort on Friday and then letting it sit over the weekend in the kettle. On Monday the wort will be transferred to the fermenter where it will join with 50 pounds of organic peaches and dry hopped with juicy and bright organic Amarillo, El Dorado and Chinook hops.

EP refers to “Extended Peach” and also the extension of the project into Portland. The first collaboration brew, B-Side Organic Peach IPA, was brewed in Fort Collins and made its debut at the Oregon Brewers Festival earlier this week. It is available now at both Hopworks pub locations for a limited time.

Ninkasi Brewing Releasing 50th Anniversary Mount Angel Oktoberfest

The last couple days have really started to feel as if Fall is on the way....yeah I know its July and we've got a lot of summer left, but I love the Fall season and I'm happy to see the news that fall beers are on the way. Good Times At The 28th Annual Oregon Brewers

The 28th annual Oregon Brewers Festival Started yesterday. We would like to thank the OBF festival organizers for the media pass (cup & tokens) so we could sample some of the fine beers that are being poured during the brewfest that continues on through Sunday.
A few changes this year that you should be aware of. 

The normal long tables that are usually under the big tents are now outside along the fence line and in place of those, they have standing upright tables. Should work well to keep traffic moving on Friday and Saturday, the busiest days for OBF.

Last year at OBF they had a combo Buzz Tent and International Tent. This year the Buzz portion is gone and now it's just the international tent where you will find breweries from the Netherlands and New Zealand.....and its just one token per sample! A nice change from the multi token years in previous years.

And if you don't know by now, the glass tasting glass is gone and replaced with a new polycarbonate tasting glass. We're happy its back to non-glass, also no aroma issues from the polycarbonate glass, unlike the previous years of plastic mugs, and bonus you don't have to worry about breakage if they get dropped.

We sampled many beers at OBF this year and here are a few of the beers that we really enjoyed at OBF.
  • Claim 52 Brewing - Runnermass - Kolsch/lemon-lime soda Blend - Very refreshing and at 3% abv, would be a great hot day drinker.
  • Breakside Brewing - Rainbows & Unicorns - Session IPA - Best beer name of the fest...Very refreshing, light, citrus notes and at 4.7% another easy drinker.
  • Cascade Brewing -  Frite Gaulois - NW Sour with a blend of Weizen, Saison, and Blonde Ales ages in oak wine Barrels. Excellent
  • Burnside Brewing - Smoked Berliner Weiss - An amazing combo with the hint of smoke and the refreshing tartness.
  • Melvin Brewing  - Hamber - A hoppy Amber - Nice balance between the malt and hops.

Craft Brewing Capitals Merge Talent Through Beer Exchange

Portland and The Oregon Brewers Festival Play Host to Five of New Zealand’s Best Brewers

PORTLAND, Ore. (July 22, 2015) With the Oregon Brewers Festival in sight, a flock of beer-centric Kiwis migrate north to pour their beer and share some Oregon beer culture. In pursuit of malty and hoppy enlightenment, the five brewers from Wellington, NZ visit Portland — home to 61 different breweries. “Portland boasts more breweries than any city in the world and is known as the Beervana of USA, ” says David Cryer, the man responsible for building the partnership between Oregon and New Zealand. The brewers’ journey overseas is part of the Oregon and New Zealand Beer Culture Exchange, which encourages the sharing of ideas and experiences between Portland and Wellington, two of the world’s foremost craft beer capitals.  
During their weeklong knowledge quest, the traveling brewers visit with many of Portland’s renowned brewing talents. In addition, they tour an Oregon hop field, lead tastings of their own New Zealand brews at Belmont Station, and represent the international brewing community on stage at the OBF opening ceremonies.  
The exchange is a partnership between the Oregon Brewers Festival and Beervana — New Zealand’s preeminent craft beer festival. Last August, roles reversed as brewing representatives from Portland travelled to Wellington for Beervana. When describing their city’s passion for beer, the folks from Tuatara Brewery say, “It probably helps that we’re based in Wellington where beer appreciation is not so much a cult as a full-blown religion.”

No-Li Collaborates With Bob Brenlin To Brew The Newest Beer In The No Boundaries Series

Spokane, WA…For every revolution, there are revolutionaries.  For every frontier, there are pioneers.  For Washington craft beer pubs, there is Bob Brenlin.

As owner of The Latona, Hopvine and Fiddler’s Inn, Bob Brenlin was ahead of his time in creating craft-centric pubs in Seattle, WA.  To celebrate how far the culture of craft beer has come in Washington state, Bob and Patrick Wilson (GM, The Latona) journeyed east to No-Li Brewhouse, rolled up their sleeves and helped brew the newest beer in the No Boundaries series: Re-Fresh Tart Pale Ale.

“Working with Bob was a great pleasure,” said No-Li Head Brewer, Carey Fristoe.  “The wealth of knowledge he possesses is great.  The opportunity to collaborate with him opened the door to brew an interesting and memorable beer.  It’s light, fruity and refreshingly tart. I think he’ll be proud to share this with his pub patrons.”

To complete the Spokane-Style experience, Bob and Patrick stayed at the beautiful historic Davenport Hotel and even raised a pint to celebrate the opening of The Blackbird with Patrick McPherson.

Tropical fruit and cherry hop aromas dance lightly over a sessionable pale base. Lactic Acid produced during a kettle sour gives a pleasant, sour sensation. Wheat and rye provide a smooth, spicy character to balance the big fruit aroma of Mosaic, El Dorado, and Amarillo hops. Dry hopping with Mosaic and El Dorado accentuate the tropical and cherry hop aromas and flavors. At 4.5% ABV, this light, tart, fruity beer is a real thirst quencher!

10-Barrel Brewery to open in the Source Hotel, River North District  

 Ft. Collins, Colo., July 21, 2015 New Belgium Brewing is about to let the creative juices flow through a new 10-barrel pilot brewery at The Source Hotel in Denver’s River North District (RiNo). New Belgium will brew on the ground floor of the Source Hotel, with barrel aging on the 8th floor in a rooftop lounge, dubbed “The Woods”, a collaboration between New Belgium and The Source Hotel. “The Woods” will serve New Belgium beers paired with small plates and will include a snack counter and bar, sit-down dining and beer garden. The 8th floor will also include a pool and roof deck with mountain and downtown views.

New Belgium beers originating from the 2,000 square foot brewery will go to establishments in The Source Hotel and expanded market hall. The fifty oak barrels for on-site aging will help expand New Belgium’s sour beer offerings, which the brewery has been producing since 1998. That’s when brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, first introduced aging beer in wood barrels and blending to New Belgium. The brewery’s current cellar in Ft. Collins – also known as the foeder forest – now has 64 French Oak foeders, or barrels, making it one of the most comprehensive wood beer programs in the country.

“After 25 years in Ft. Collins, we’re really excited to get more deeply involved in Colorado’s cultural and political capital,” said Jenn Vervier, director of strategy and sustainability at New Belgium. “We’ve long considered creating a Denver location to bring the New Belgium experience to more of our Colorado fans and to the millions of travelers who visit Denver. Zeppelin Development, the Denver-based boutique development company behind The Source Hotel and expanded market hall will work with the group behind The St. Julien Hotel in Boulder, Colo. to operate The Source Hotel. The 28th Annual Oregon Brewers Festival starts this Wednesday at noon and runs through Sunday. The OBF folks have provided with the most current list of beers by trailer. Note that the list isn't by Alpha or by style because the OBF folks - are dealing with more than 1,600 kegs of cold beer. These kegs are shipped to various distributors. When the distributor brings down their trailer to the festival, we don’t have the time or manpower to unload and re-sort the beers; that would be the definition of insanity -

Speakeasy Ales & Lagers Baby Daddy Session Ale

Speakeasy Lagers & Ales sent a sample of their new session IPA, Baby Daddy. Baby Daddy Session IPA is the first beer released by Speakeasy from their new line, Session 47 Series. Session 47 beers will be low alcohol but flavorful beers and will be available in cans or on draft.

We here at are huge fans of session beers and Baby Daddy Session IPA really hits the session style well.

Also, we're big fans of the distinctive packaging. I love the almost flat-black can with touch of gold, and you gotta love the brass knuckles with baby pacifier. Kudos to Speakeasy for making their products really stand out.

When pouring into the IPA glass, you see a nice gold coloring, and slight bit of  haze. Aromas of malt, citrus and citrus zest are noted. The flavor is nicely balanced with great citrus flavor, and it has a nice spicy bite at the finish.

I could see buying a six pack or even a case for at-home consumption or when traveling.  Since the beer is canned, it would be great to pack along on a hike or road trip.  Another plus is that its a 4.7% session beer, you can enjoy a few of these Baby Daddy cans before you gotta stop.

Also be on the lookout for Suds Session Ale, the second release in the Session 47 Series. Suds Session Ale will be coming out in cans and draft in August.

The first edition of our Session 47 Series, Baby Daddy IPA is sunny straw in color and loaded with hops. The aroma and flavor yield citrus and tropical notes: grapefruit, melon, lime, passion fruit, and a touch of spice will delight your palate. Cheese Pairing: Choose a mild blue like Gorgonzola. Enjoy it solo or crumbled over a citrusy salad.

Some like it hot: Go for some curry. Spices like tamarind, coriander, and cardamom play well with hops, which also cut through creamy yogurt or butter-based sauces.
