Alaskan Brewing Moves to New Distributor in Seattle

Courtesy of Alaskan Brewing Co

Existing partnership and great product knowledge make The Odom Corporation a natural choice

(Oct. 2, 2015 – Juneau, Alaska)  Alaskan Brewing has announced a switch in distributor partners in the Seattle area, moving to The Odom Corporation, which has operated in the Seattle market since 2005. Odom has been distributing Alaskan products in Eastern Washington since 2004. Odom and Alaskan Brewing have the additional connection of both being family-founded businesses with a long history in the Pacific Northwest.

“We have known the Odom family for years and have had a great working relationship in Eastern Washington, so we are very excited to be working with them in the Seattle market,” said Geoff Larson, co-founder of Alaskan Brewing. “With their long-term knowledge of our product line, we are confident that this partnership will yield immediate benefits to both Alaskan Brewing and to The Odom Corporation.”

Alaskan Brewing was founded in Juneau in 1986 by Geoff and his wife Marcy Larson, and today ranks as one of the top 20 craft breweries in the U.S.  Odom was founded in 1934 by Milt Odom, and so the two companies have worked in the same industry and markets for decades.

“We are proud to represent the Alaskan Brewing brands in the Pacific Northwest,” said Adam Hilpert, Chief Executive Officer of The Odom Corporation. “Alaskan is a perfect fit for The Odom Corporation and we look forward to expanding our relationship with Alaskan Brewing to include the Seattle market. The brewery’s ongoing commitment to brew quality products aligns with Odom’s commitment to providing the best in craft beer offerings”.

Alaskan Brewing fans in Seattle should see no interruption in buying Alaskan at their favorite bar, restaurant or store, but will soon be seeing the beer on even more store shelves and tap handles.

“We have always had a close connection to Seattle and Washington State,” Larson said. “It is our second largest market, next to Alaska, and our states are tightly linked with shared economies, our residents have a strong commitment to our natural surroundings, and of course both Seattleites and Alaskans know that the great outdoors can be made even better with a great craft beer.”

The transition to Odom as the new distributor in Seattle will be occurring during October and should be fully complete by Nov.1.

No-Li Brewhouse Releasing Slacker 6-Packs

Courtesy of No-Li Brewhouse
Spokane, WA…Recently, there have been quite a few changes happening within the craft beer industry that raise some concern about local breweries’ independence. No-Li Brewhouse decided to send their message loud and clear with their newest 6-pack, Slacker: A Chimp Off The Ol’ Block!

“This beer is so good and so complex that we almost asked for help from a larger brewery,” says Brewery Operations Manager, Damon Scott, with a smirk. “But we wanted to show our team and our supporters that we’re capable of going big…and we can do so independently.”

With a solid 6.1% ABV and 20 IBUs, Slacker brings a unique brew to independent and free-loving craft beer enthusiasts.

Scott says, "This recipe highlights Madagascar Vanilla Beans post fermentation, giving the beer a creamy, slightly sweet, vanilla taste that melds seamlessly with the orange peel."

Slacker delivers a smooth foundation from wheat, acidulated and caramel malts, and the sweet orange peel tossed in during boil lets the juicy orange flavor and aroma shine. The strong citrus character, reinforced by Comet and Cascade hops, only confirms that the delicious orange does not fall too far from the Brass Monkey tree!

Keep a close eye on your local stores, folks, because Slacker 6-packs will swing into the market on Friday, October 9th!

Cheers!

Ghost Runners Brewery Anniversary Party and Ghost Run

Courtesy of Ghost Runners Brewery

VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON October 1, 2015 - Ghost Runners Brewery announces their anniversary party and Ghost Run to be held at the brewery on Saturday, October 24, 2015. The Ghost Run is an annual event that started in 2012 with the launching of Ghost Runners Brewery.

“The first Ghost Run was a huge celebration,” explains brewery partner, Amy Seibel. “Our federal and state licensing had just been finalized. The dream of owning a brewery was a reality. It seemed fitting to get dressed up in costumes, invite 50 of our closest friends, and go for a run.”

The event has been repeated each year, but from different locations. The first Ghost Run left from the owners’ house and went through neighborhoods. The second and third Ghost Runs took place in downtown Vancouver.  This year the event will be held at Ghost Runner’s new 10 barrel brewery and taproom located on Minnehaha Street in Vancouver.

The event is a celebration and an opportunity to exercise. The Ghost Run will be mapped out to 3 miles, but running is not a required. “We’ve found that when adults gather together in costumes they are more interested in hanging out and having fun than racing,” says Seibel. “Every year some people walk, some people take interesting short cuts, and some people stay back and drink. At this event running is optional, costumes are mandatory.”  The event will have food, beer, music, a costume contest, and raffle prizes for ticket holders.  Tickets start at $25 per person and are available at https://ghostrun2015.eventbrite.com

Jackson’s Melvin Brewing Wins Small Brewpub Of The Year And Wins Gold And Silver Medals At GABF

Melvin Brewing and Charlie Papazian
JACKSON, WY - October 1, 2015 -
Melvin Brewing returned home from last weekend’s Great American Beer Festival with the craft brewing industry’s top honor — the Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year Award.
As Melvin’s biggest award to date, this is a tremendous industry endorsement, showing respect for Melvin’s exceptional beers and the experience of its brewing team. Now in its 34th year, the Great American Beer Festival is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and one of the most prestigious beer judging events in the country.
Melvin also brought home two Brewer Association Medals: the Gold medal for American Style Fruit Beer and the Bronze medal for Fresh or Wet Hop Ale.
Having won the underground YCH Hops Alpha King Competition in both 2012 & 2013, Melvin’s 2x4 DIPA took 2nd place in 2015. Both of Melvin’s entries, 2x4 & Drunken Master, placed among the top 15 in a field of more than 130 beers.  The Alpha King contest is the top competition of well balanced and drinkable, yet highly hopped ales.
John Fayman, a Melvin investor and craft beer authority, said this signals Melvin is ready for the big time.
“This is as much about the Brewers Association recognizing the incredible job that the Melvin Team has done as it is about the Brewers Association letting Melvin know that it’s ready for distribution in Colorado and everywhere else,” Fayman said.
As if on cue following the festival awards ceremony, distributors from around the country flocked to Melvin’s table to discuss Melvin’s distribution strategy in their territory. The success parallels the recent opening of Melvin’s new 20,000 square foot brewery in Alpine, Wyoming. Located just a few miles from Jackson Hole, where Melvin plans to make beer from the future.  Melvin is expanding distribution this year to Colorado and Washington and points beyond in the future.
In 2014, Melvin Brewing won two medals at the World Beer Cup: A Gold in the Imperial India Pale Ale category for its 2x4 and a Bronze in the Fruit Beer category for its ChChChCh-Cherry Bomb. Both beers won also medals (Cherry Bomb - Silver, 2x4 - Gold) at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival.   2x4 is the only IPA to win Alpha King, GABF Gold and WBC Gold.
Melvin Brewery is located in the heart of downtown Jackson Hole at Thai Me Up Restaurant, which was started in 2000 by Melvin founder Jeremy Tofte.  The new production facility will be up and running this fall. Melvin is currently installing its custom built Newlands 30bbl, 4 vessel system.
The Great American Beer Festival had its best year too . . .
Hosted by the Brewers Association this year in Boulder, CO, The Great American Beer Festival surpassed all previous participation records, with 6,647 entries in 92 beer categories covering 145 different beer styles. A panel of 242 judges from 15 countries awarded 275 professional medals to 242 breweries.
More than 1,500 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., attended, including 423 first-time participants.
The 2016 Great American Beer Festival will be held Oct. 6-8 in Denver.

About Melvin Brewing
Melvin Brewing was founded in 2009 by Jeremy Tofte and Kirk McHale to fulfill their need to drink the biggest, most exciting West-Coast Style IPAs in Jackson, WY. Experimenting on a 20 gallon, then three-barrel system, they developed the Melvin IPA and 2x4 Imperial IPA, which went on to win Gold medals at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival, back-to-back Alpha King awards in 2012 and 2013, and a Gold Medal at the World Beer Cup. On the strength of these and other beer brands, Melvin Brewing was awarded the 2015 Small Brew Pub and Small Brew Pub Brewer of the year.
Melvin brewing now has more than 40 amazing beer recipes to its name, expanding its portfolio of hoppy beers and other styles, with brands such as ChChCh-Cherry Bomb (Fruit Beer), Killer Bees (Honey Ale), Coffee Ruckus (Coffee Imperial Stout), Hey Zeus (Mexican Lager) to name drop a few.
In the fourth quarter of 2015, Melvin Brewing will open its production facility in Alpine, WY, brewing on a new 30-barrel, 4-vessel system.  Kirk will keep manning the three-barrel in the closet at Jackson, Wyoming’s Thai Me Up Restaurant.   He will keep creating some of the most exciting beers on the market today while listening to Wu-Tang at full blast.  Dave Chichura, formerly of Oskar Blue’s, will helm the controls in Alpine, while listening to Ween at full blast.

Fort George’s Fresh IPA Returns to the Pacific Northwest

Courtesy of Fort George Brewing

October 1st, 2015
For Freshest Release – Use Immediately

The call came in. Fresh hops were ready. Without delay, the Fort George truck was dispatched to Yakima where it was loaded with over a ton of dank, wet Mosaics. As you can imagine, the aroma on the drive home was amazing.

In just 48 hours from harvest, the brewers at Fort George had packed the tanks with wet hopped beers. Fresh-hopped versions of The Optimist and Suicide Squeeze IPA were bubbling away in the Sweet Virginia pub system. And in the Lovell Brewery, enough Fresh IPA to provide the Pacific Northwest their wet hop fix. Well, at least until this limited batch runs out.

“It’s definitely a lot of work in a very short period of time, brewing a fresh hop beer on this scale,” explains Fort George lead production brewer Mike Frankowicz. “But all of us are excited about how it turned out, and really looking forward to enjoying a few.”

And Mike is excited for you to try a pint as well. So eager, he drove an extra truck filled with Fresh IPA cans to Portland this morning. From vine, to brewery, to beer, to can, and into your hands in just two weeks - that’s how fresh Fresh IPA is.
Courtesy of Fort George Brewing
Fort George Fresh IPA is like beer in 3D, without those silly glasses. Using wet hops means extra hop oils make their way into the can. Fort George seals in that freshness, creating a time capsule of hop aromatics - pure canned triumph. When you crack the seal you should expect resin, citrus, and fruit to flood forward, along with an earthy complexity.

Fresh IPA releases at the pub in Astoria today, October 1st at 4pm. And thanks to Mike, 16-oz four-pack cans of Fresh IPA will be available in Portland starting tomorrow, October 2nd. Look for draft only small batches of The Fresh Hopped Optimist and Fresh Hop Suicide Squeeze releasing at Fort George Brewery on Tuesday, October 6th. Fresh IPA will be available on tap and in cans across the rest of the Pacific Northwest starting next week. These limited release fresh hop beers won’t last long. Get them while you can.

Courtesy of Hopworks Urban Brewery
PORTLAND, OR. – Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) announces the release of their cult-classic seasonal offering, Organic Abominable Winter Ale. Abominable emerges from the depths of the brewery every winter, surprising drinkers with a complex floral, spicy and citrus backdrop from organic Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Simcoe hops. This year the release of Abominable Winter Ale coincides with the Handmade Bike & Beer Festival,” said HUB’s brewmaster and founder, Christian Ettinger. “Our brewers have recently reported sightings of strange, beer-soaked footprints in our barrel cellar. I’m a little nervous the monster will show up at the event while our unexpecting guests are on site, but finding the Abominable snowman is on my bucket list, so deep down I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

Alaskan Brewing Releases Heritage Coffee Brown Ale

Alaskan Brewing Offers a New Take on Coffee Beer

Heritage Coffee Brown Ale uses radical technique to bring rich flavor

Courtesy of Alaskan Brewing Co

JUNEAU, Alaska (Oct. 1, 2015) – Alaskan Brewing Company teamed up with Juneau-based Heritage Coffee Roasting Co. to craft a new beer that accentuates the richness of coffee and the smoothness of premium malts. The result is Alaskan Heritage Coffee Brown Ale, the latest of the Pilot Series of beers, available starting in October in 22-ounce bombers and on draft in the 17 states where Alaskan Brewing is distributed.

“We were looking to brew a coffee beer that wasn’t overly-dominated by dark malts,” said Alaskan Brewer Tyler Lindquist. “That’s why we went with a Brown Ale for this beer. The subtleness of the Brown Ale then allowed us to accentuate the richness of a great coffee, instead of the bitter acrid flavor that sometimes comes through in coffee beers.”

That subtle flavor allowed for a radical technique that required close collaboration between the brewers at Alaskan and the roasters at Heritage.

“They wanted to have a deep coffee backbone to this beer, so we all came up with the idea of roasting some of the malt in our coffee roaster with some of the beans used in the beer,” said Heritage Coffee Roaster Mike Dunlevy. “That’s pretty tricky, because the flashpoint of malt is much lower than that for coffee beans, so the potential of fire was very real.”

Courtesy of Alaskan Brewing Co
Heritage Roasters worked with Alaskan Brewers to sample coffees in order to find a blend that would bring out chocolate, caramel and honey in the final beer. They decided to use Heritage’s signature Brazilian blend “Paixao” (Portuguese for passion) which was cold-brewed to reduce acidity. This cold-brewed coffee was added at multiple stages throughout the brewing process of the beer, in order to infuse it with a deep and rich coffee flavor and aroma.

Heritage Coffee and Alaskan Brewing have common roots in Juneau, where Heritage founder Grady Saunders first started bringing freshly-roasted coffee to the community in 1974. Saunders was one of the people that helped inspire the idea of smoking malts to create the award-winning Alaskan Smoked Porter in 1988.

First sampled at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, Alaskan Heritage Coffee Brown Ale is already garnering rave reviews, with at least one reference to it being part of a “next level” of coffee beers.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lompoc Brewing’s Proletariat Red won a Silver Medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival® (GABF) which took place in Denver, Colorado on Sept. 26.

Double Mountain Brewery Releases Killer Green Fresh Hop IPA

Courtesy of Double Mountain Brewery
press release
Hood River, OR - September 28th, 2015 –Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom Killer Green Fresh Hop IPA arrives just in time for fresh hop festival season. This well hopped fresh hop IPA lives up to its reputation with a fresh hop blend of Brewer's Gold and Simcoe hops. The Killer Green is currently available on draft and by bottle at the Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom located in downtown Hood River and can also be found throughout the Northwest, British Columbia, and Southern California.

The Double Mountain's newest brewer, Jennifer House was one of the brewers on hand for brewing this year's batch of  Killer Green. "The aroma off the hop back was better than the smell of my mom's kitchen during the holidays. The Killer green turned out dangerously dank and delicious!" she said.

Killer Green
Fresh Hop IPA
7.6% ABV, 85 BU

DescriptionIt’s the most wonderful time of the year. We were able to wrangle a bounty of Brewer’s Gold and Simcoe from Sodbusters Farms in Salem for us to turn into delicious fermented nectar. We worked around the clock to ensure these beauties got in to the boil, the hop back, and the fermenter as soon as possible. The result: pine forest, red apple, savory citrus, kind herb, and red fruit aromas waft from the effervescence, supported by a dry, brioche malt body and a pleasantly lasting bitterness. Be green. Drink Killer Green.

Deschutes Brewery Raises $79,700 For Second Harvest Heartland

Deschutes Brewery's Derek Johnson (right) presents the donation check to Second Harvest Heartland CEO, Rob Zeaske.
Press Release:
Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery set up the world’s largest pop-up pub in Minneapolis earlier this month and raised a total of $79,700 for Second Harvest Heartland. On September 19, the brewery brought its 402-foot custom, transportable bar to Minneapolis’ North Loop, serving 177 kegs to approximately 12,000 people. The one-day-only event donated 100 percent of proceeds to Second Harvest Heartland, one of the nation's largest and most innovative food banks.

Rob Zeaske, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, said, “Thank you to Deschutes for choosing the Twin Cities for this event and thank you for choosing Second Harvest Heartland to be the recipient of these funds. The money raised will enable Second Harvest Heartland to distribute more than 239,000 meals into the local community.”

With a soft launch in Deschutes Brewery’s hometown of Bend, Oregon and national stops in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Minneapolis so far this year, the Street Pub has raised nearly a quarter million dollars for charity.

This giant bar is traveling to select locations around the country to benefit the communities where it sets up its 40 taps. Final stops for 2015 include Denver on October 17 and Sacramento on November 14.

Turbulent Consequence: Peche honored as the country’s best Belgian-style lambic or sour ale

Press release:
September 30, 2015 - Corvallis, OR — Block 15 Brewing Company claimed a gold medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition, announced September 26. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The 2015 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 242 expert judges from the record number of 6,647 entries, received from
1,552 U.S. breweries.

Block 15 Brewing Company captured one of the most coveted awards in the brewing world for Turbulent Consequence: Peche. Peche began as a lambic-style wild ale—naturally cooled in a custom-designed coolship and fermented in oak barrels, as part of its Turbulent Consequence spontaneous fermentation program. After aging for a year to add complexity and the lambic’s characteristic sour bite, the beer was racked into oak wine barrels with local white peaches, matured through the winter, and then bottled with locally gathered honey to create natural carbonation.

“Our Turbulent Consequence program utilizes some of our most challenging brewing techniques to produce some of our most unique beer, so it is exciting to be recognized with a GABF gold medal from the beer community for our efforts,” said Nick Arzner, Block 15 Brewing Company’s founding head brewer.
