Block 15 Releases Seasonal Coffee Stout & Bière de Mars

Courtesy of Block 15 Brewing

Both spring seasonals to be available bottled and on tap around Oregon

Corvallis, OR — This March, Block 15Brewing Company will release two new spring entries in their Seasonal Bottle Conditioned Series—Cosmic Cold Brew, Double Ristretto and Here Comes the Sunshine. Both will be available bottled and on tap in early spring—with distribution to bottle shops and tap houses around Oregon and parts of Washington. Bottle conditioned using Block 15’s custom-fabricated mixing tank, both beers are designed to be enjoyed both freshly bottled and cellared.

Cosmic Cold Brew, Double Ristretto

Stout, Cold Conditioned with Coffee Beans

Working alongside their south Corvallis neighbors, Bespoken Coffee Roasters, Block 15 elevated their classic Nebula stout with additional malt and a 24-hour cold extraction on freshly roasted Ethiopia Yukiro coffee. Both varietal and roast profile were selected to complement this stout with a buttery nuttiness, zesty citrus, and gentle black tea finish. Inspired by ristretto espresso's decadent flavor, their Double Ristretto variation features an extra-generous shot of rich, malty first runnings, as well as a higher concentration of coffee during cold extraction. The result is a pungent roast and chocolate malt character and a thicker, creamier body.

Cosmic Cold Brew, Double Ristretto is releasing to bottle shops and beer bars around Oregon on March 13th.

Grains: 2-Row, Maris Otter, Chocolate 450, Crystal 120, Chocolate Wheat Malt, Oat Malt, Caramel 35, Roasted Barley, Flaked Oats
Adjunct: Ethiopia Yukiro coffee Hops: Columbus, Crystal Yeast: English Ale
ABV: 9%
FG: 1.022

Here Comes the Sunshine

Bière de Mars

Block 15’s nod to Northern France's springtime farmhouse ales, this Bière de Mars is inspired by budding flowers, new growth, and the sun emerging from its winter slumber. Its blend of North American malted barley, French Pilsner malt, and locally-grown white wheat produces a rustic grist character that is complemented by gentle hopping with Oregon and European

varietals and fermentation with a pair of characterful yeast strains. Together, they produce a bright and lively farmhouse ale offering nuanced complexity and a crisp, refreshing finish.

Here Comes the Sunshine is releasing to bottle shops and beer bars around Oregon on March 20th.

Grains: 2-Row, Franco Pilsen, Franco Munich, Chateau Monastique, Cracked Wheat
Hops: Magnum, Sterling, Hallertau Blanc
Yeast: Mixed fermentation with Saccharomyces Trois and Saison Dupont
ABV: 6%
FG: 1.006

Both Here Comes the Sunshine and Cosmic Cold Brew, Double Ristretto are available in 500mL bottles, featuring artwork from local artist Patricia Smith.

Block 15 Releases 16oz Cans of Gloria! Unfiltered Pilsner

Courtesy of Block 15 Brewing

Available in-house and at a selection of Oregon bottle shops and beer bars, with increased distribution planned in the coming months.

Corvallis, OR — This week, Block 15 Brewing will begin releasing 16oz cans of Gloria! to a selection of bottle shops and beer bars around Oregon. Also available for in-house purchase at both of Block 15’s Corvallis locations, this unfiltered pilsner will see increased distribution around Oregon throughout the summer. Gloria! will be available in cans  year-round.

Blending delicate malt character and zesty hops, Gloria! is Block 15’s vision of the crisp, unfiltered pilsner. Brewed with floor-malted pilsner malts, it pours a hazy, straw-colored pint. European and Oregon-grown hops impart citrus and floral spice, while select lager yeast finishes clean and refreshing. This immensely drinkable lager is their brewers’ choice after a long day in the brewhouse.

“We pay close attention to when Gloria! is packaged, with the goal of perfectly-timing a balance between vibrant hop bouquet and complex yeast character at the time of canning,” said Nick Arzner, Block 15’s founding brewer. “Packaged after four weeks of cold lagering, this snapshot in flavor and aroma will last for a couple weeks, when stored cold. With extended cold storage, Gloria! mellows out to further balance these lively hop and yeast notes with its intricate malt backbone. When stored cold, Gloria! drinks beautifully for up to three months.”

Grains: Bohemian Pilsner, Pilsner, Carafoam
Hops: Magnum, Hallertau, Oregon-Grown Mt. Hood, Czech Saaz Yeast: Czech Pilsner
ABV: 5%
FG: 1.005

Gloria! is available in 16oz cans, featuring artwork from local artist Patricia Smith. Learn more about Gloria! at: www.block15.com/gloria.

Beers Made By Walking hikes in Corvallis with Greenbelt Land Trust

Courtesy of Beers Made By Walking
Corvallis, OR – This Spring Greenbelt Land Trust (GLT) is partnering for the first time with Beers Made By Walking and four Corvallis breweries to explore the prairies, forests, and streams of the Willamette Valley, utilizing the fertile Valley soils and abundant flowers, grasses, and herbs as inspiration for beers and meads to be launched later this year. Through two guided walks, the public can visit with local brewers and learn about regional botany. The walks are on May 21 with Flat Tail Brewing and Mazama Brewing, and May 28 with Sky High Brewing and Nectar Creek Meadery. Hikes have limited space, so RSVP by emailing GLT or visit their website.

Founded in 2011 by Eric Steen, Beers Made By Walking partners a local environmental organization with area brewers to journey out into nature in search of inspiration or ingredients. Brewers are well familiar with the standard menu of ingredients – hops, malt, yeast – but this program broadens the horizon of possible brewing additions, from herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables they might encounter along the trail. Alongside botanists, brewers explore the world at their feet, using the flora as inspiration for creating beers to be launched in the fall. The program has yielded over 100 place-based beers, with some interesting varietals, including the use of ingredient like lemonbalm, sage, fescue, juniper, wheatgrass, and wild ricegrass.

During Corvallis Beer Week in September, 2016 the beer and mead inspired by these walks will be available to the public. Proceeds from the beer will benefit Greenbelt Land Trust.

“I hope that this program gives drinkers a sense of place, get people outdoors, do something creative, and think about our local landscapes in new ways. Place is one of the only things we really have to connect with the world. I think beer that echoes that mindset is beautiful, because you can feel an attachment to it in a way that is different than a beer that doesn’t have a sense of place,” says Steen.

“We are always trying to look at the land through different lenses – from history, to art and geology ... and now beer! This unique opportunity to walk the land and inspect the plants in our own backyards enables us to think about how nature inspires us all. And, how often does one get the opportunity to go for a walk with their favorite brewer?” says Jessica McDonald, Associate Director with Greenbelt Land Trust.
