Sasquatch Brewing Company Expands to Northwest Portland

March 30, 2017 – Portland, Oregon – After five years in its tiny, hand-made brewery and pub, Sasquatch Brewing Company is undertaking a major expansion, adding a new brewing facility in a 4000-square foot warehouse in industrial Northwest Portland. The new brewery will include a 15-barrel system, two 90-barrel cider fermenters, and a tasting room open to the public seven days a week. Three brand new beers – a Kolsch, Amber and a Grapefruit IPA – and a new Hopped Cider will be released at Sasquatch’s Grand Opening event. The event is set for April 21 from 3 to 10 pm at 2531 NW 30th Avenue, Portland. The festivities are free and open to the public and will include complimentary BBQ and live music from Portland bluegrass band Out West.

“The brewery has been a labor of love from day one,” said Sasquatch Brewery founder Tom Sims. “We have appreciated and thrived on the support of the local community, and are excited that we’ve come to a point where we’ve simply outgrown our space. We are looking forward to having room to spread our wings and begin some new programs out of the new location.”

The new brewery will feature 22 taps with a wide variety of beers and ciders, local kegged wine, a barrel program for aging beers and large, private event space. The original location in Hillsdale will remain open, focusing on developing small experimental batches.

Sasquatch started as a classic Northwest, hop-driven brewery, and over the years has broadened its offerings to include sours, Belgians and ciders. Its top year-round beers include Woodboy IPA, Oregon Session Ale, Vanilla Bourbon Cream Ale, Hairy Knuckle Stout and Red Electric IRA.

Sasquatch, a true bootstrapped brewery that prides itself on making an authentic agricultural product by hand – from hauling grain to welding its own bar and tables – feels at home in its gritty location in the heart of one of the last true industrial areas of Portland. Just inches from the back of the building a train runs by, and out front across the street, steel galvanizers are dipping metal into steaming vats of molten zinc.

And yet despite its industrial location in this city of contrasts, Sasquatch is nestled at the foot of Portland’s beloved Forest Park, one of the country’s largest urban forests. This makes it ideal for hosting hikes and runs in the park, because as Sims puts it: “Exercise is best when it ends with a beer.” On the brewery’s north wall is a large, colorful mural painted by renowned Portland artists, Chris Bigalke and Julia Skerry. It features a nod to the things the brewery team loves most: the outdoors, Portland and of course, good beer.

Mike Paladino, Head Brewer, said, “The brewery’s new location will give us the room to make lagers, start a barrel-aging program and start packaging beer and cider in a 500ml bottle format. The new facility in the heart of Northwest Portland is a brewer’s dream.”

The Brewers Association Releases 2016 Statistics for Small and Independent Brewers

Courtesy of the Brewers Association
Boulder, COMarch 28, 2017—The Brewers Association (BA)—the trade association representing small and independent1 American craft brewers—today released 2016 data on U.S. craft brewing2 growth. With over 5,300 breweries operating during the year, small and independent craft brewers represent 12.3 percent market share by volume of the overall beer industry.

In 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, and saw a 6 percent rise in volume3 on a comparable base and a 10 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $23.5 billion, representing 21.9 percent market share. By adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases by large brewing companies. Microbreweries and brewpubs delivered 90 percent of the craft brewer growth.

“Small and independent brewers are operating in a new brewing reality still filled with opportunity, but within a much more competitive landscape,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the overall beer market remains static and the large global brewers lose volume, their strategy has been to focus on acquiring craft brewers. This has been a catalyst for slower growth for small and independent brewers and endangered consumer access to certain brands. Small and independent brewers were able to fill in the barrels lost to acquisitions and show steady growth but at a rate more reflective of today’s industry dynamics. The average brewer is getting smaller and growth is more diffuse within the craft category, with producers at the tail helping to drive growth for the overall segment.”

Additionally, in 2016 the number of operating breweries in the U.S. grew 16.6 percent, totaling 5,301 breweries, broken down as follows: 3,132 microbreweries, 1,916 brewpubs, 186 regional craft breweries and 67 large or otherwise non-craft brewers. Small and independent breweries account for 99 percent of the breweries in operation. Throughout the year, there were 826 new brewery openings and only 97 closings. Combined with already existing and established breweries and brewpubs, craft brewers provided nearly 129,000 jobs, an increase of almost 7,000 from the previous year.

Note: Numbers are preliminary. For additional insights from Bart Watson, visit “Breaking Down the Craft Growth Numbers” on the Brewers Association website. A more extensive analysis will be released during the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America® in Washington, D.C. from April 10-13. The full 2016 industry analysis will be published in the May/June 2017 issue of The New Brewer, highlighting regional trends and production by individual breweries.
1An American craft brewer is small, independent and traditional. Small: Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Independent: Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. Traditional: A brewer that has a majority of its total beverage alcohol volume in beers whose flavor derives from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their fermentation. Flavored malt beverages (FMBs) are not considered beers.
2Absolute figures reflect the dynamic craft brewer data set as specified by the craft brewer definition. Growth numbers are presented on a comparable base. For full methodology, see the Brewers Association website.
3 Volume by craft brewers represent total taxable production.

Coronado Brewing Company Partners with Surfrider Foundation To launch CoastWise Session IPA

San Diego, CA - March 28, 2017 - Today, Coronado Brewing Company is excited to announce a new partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the coasts, with the launch of a new collaboration beer, CoastWise Session IPA. In line with Coronado Brewing Company's brand mantra to 'Stay Coastal,' a portion of the proceeds will support Surfrider Foundation's mission of protecting the ocean, waves and beaches. CoastWise is the latest addition to the company's core lineup, and will be available in retail locations throughout Coronado's distribution network starting April 1, 2017. In addition to the proceeds from beer sales, the company is also hosting a series of beach cleanups leading up to Earth Day on April 22

"As a local brewery with coastal roots, we're thrilled to partner with the Surfrider Foundation to help support the protection of our ocean and shorelines," said Brandon Richards, COO, Coronado Brewing Company. "Since founding Coronado Brewing Company 21 years ago on Coronado Island, we've been continually inspired by the ocean lifestyle, and we felt this was a natural partnership that gives consumers an opportunity to directly support the protection of the coasts through the CoastWise collaboration."

CoastWise Session IPA is brewed with a blend of Mosaic and Sorachi Ace, giving the beer bright tropical and citrus notes, with a lingering, dry bitterness. At 5% ABV, CoastWise is the perfect session beer, and the recyclable can makes it the ultimate beverage to enjoy outdoors this summer. "We had a lot of fun bringing this brand to life and we think the art and the message will resonate with our customers," said Richards. The hand-sketched artwork on the can embodies a playful and edgy version of Poseidon, protector of the sea and nod to Coronado's mermaid roots.

"We're excited about this amazing partnership with Coronado Brewing Company that will support our work to keep our coasts clean and accessible," said Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation. "Like Surfrider, Coronado Brewing Company is committed to the protection of our coasts and every purchase directly supports Surfrider's mission."

In time for spring, CoastWise will be available on draft and in can six-packs starting April 1 in the primary regions of California, Illinois and North Carolina, and will expand to additional states throughout the company's distribution network. Additionally, Coronado partnered with Thinfilm to create smart coasters designed to tell the story of the Surfrider collaboration through a novel digital experience launched via a simple tap of a smartphone.

Terminal Gravity Brewing Releases Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale

Courtesy of Terminal Gravity Brewing
Enterprise, OR -- Old man winter is on the retreat! It’s time to trade the Bog boots for the Chaco sandles and the stouts for the summer pale ales. We’re proud to introduce a new seasonal bottled beer for the season’s enjoyment.

Roshambo Hoppy Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale brewed with copious amounts of Denali and Eureka! hops. It begins with the aroma of fresh cut pineapple and citrus, and gives way to a light and crisp malt bill, ending with a slight bitterness (just 40 IBU’s) reminiscent of melon rind. We’ve been refreshed by this beer, and at 5.5% ABV it’ll have you reaching for another.

Denali hops are the real story here. We picked this hop up about a year ago when it was still #06277, an experimental hop with genetic origins from Nugget and Zeus.  It wowed us with a new sort of citrus, allowing us to shed the winter blues and see July on the horizon. So shake off that winter coat and chill down a sixer of Roshambo...spring is just ‘round the corner.

Available in 12 ounce bottles, tucked into 6-packs. You can find Roshambo at Market of Choice, New Seasons Markets, Fred Meyer Stores, Safeway, Zupans, and wherever TG is sold.

Terminal Gravity Brewing is located in the small town of Enterprise, Oregon. Just a quick 320 miles from Portland, we’re nestled in the foothills of the Wallowa Mountains.  We cut our teeth on craft brewing twenty years ago and drove the first kegs of TG IPA to PDX in the back of a pickup truck, eight kegs at a time.  It quickly became a favorite of beer drinkers all over the PNW.

Twenty years later we’ve kept our roots a priority all the while envisioning and executing an exploratory path among new IPA’s, Pilsners, American Lagers, and Barrel Aged Beers.  Our beers are an ode to our place, our people, and the kind of life worth living
