Lompoc Brewing Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Zwanzig Fest

Courtesy of Lompoc Brewing Co
PORTLAND, Ore. – A long-time Portland craft beer fixture established in 1996, Lompoc Brewing will celebrate its 20th anniversary this month with Zwanzig Fest, a week-long lineup of special events at Lompoc’s five pubs from Dec. 13 to Dec. 16 (Zwanzig means 20 in German).
To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Lompoc Brewing, the brewers – with the help of a number of local beer writers and past brewers – have brewed Zwanzig, a bitter Märzen ale in a nod to Lompoc’s very first brew, Erst Ale. Pale orange in color, its full, malty body and eight hop additions will make you reminisce tipping back a few pints on the New Old Lompoc patio (7.0% ABV).
Much like most of Lompoc’s beers, this one doesn’t really fit into a true style, so the brewers have dubbed it a bitter Märzen ale. Every day at 4pm during Zwanzig Fest, a different Lompoc pub will tap the beer; everyone who orders a Zwanzig or that day’s featured taster tray will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a variety of Lompoc swag. Owner Jerry Fechter and head brewer Bryan Keilty will be present at the events to share Lompoc’s history and talk about the good old days.
Schedule of events:
Tuesday, Dec. 13 @ Sidebar & Fifth Quadrant, 3901 N Williams Ave

MCA IPA: The 4th in the Hip Hop series of IPAs is a collaboration with Lompoc bartender Cody Bottorf. Nugget, Cascade and Galaxy hops give this copper colored IPA aromas of pine, tropical fruit and citrus.  6.2% ABV

Hopster’s Paradise: Brewed in collaboration with former Lompoc brewer Josh Merrick, this is the 5th in the Hip Hop series of IPAs. Copper to orange in hue and hopped with five different hop varietals, this beer gives off a flowery, citrus aroma. A resiny flavor with hints of pine and tangerine mingle on the tongue. 6.0% ABV

Lompoc Brewing Wins Prestigious Great American Beer Festival® Award

Courtesy of Lompoc Brewing Co

Lompoc Brewing, one of Portland’s long-established craft breweries,
wins prestigious Great American Beer Festival® Award

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lompoc Brewing’s Proletariat Red won a Silver Medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival® (GABF) which took place in Denver, Colorado on Sept. 26.

Proletariat Red won silver in the American-Style Amber/Red Ale category, out of a total of 94 entries. This was only the second time Lompoc has entered the prestigious competition.

“It’s nice to get some recognition from our peers for a Lompoc classic,” stated Lompoc owner Jerry Fechter. “I've always thought Proletariat Red is one of the Northwest's best Reds and now we have validation with a GABF medal."

Deep chestnut in color, Proletariat Red features a toasted malt profile with biscuit undertones leading to notes of caramelized pear and cinnamon. It strikes an ideal balance between malt and hops.

“We are very proud to have received this medal,” exclaimed head brewer Bryan Keilty. “Everybody on the Lompoc team works extremely hard to make the finest beer in the Northwest. The GABF is an amazing event and reminds us how lucky we are to be in the craft beer industry."

To celebrate the win, Lompoc will be offering tastes of Proletariat Red to everyone at all five of its pubs this Friday through Sunday.

Lompoc was one of 16 breweries in Oregon awarded a total of 19 medals — including five bronze medals, seven silvers and seven golds.

Release Party for Lompoc Brewing's Dagda Pan Gaelic Red Ale

Courtesy of Lompoc Brewing

Kick off St Patrick’s Day early at Lompoc Sidebar (3901 N Williams Ave) on Friday, March 13 from 4pm to close with the release of Lompoc Brewing's Dagda Pan Gaelic Red Ale. Join the Lompoc brewers for an Irish celebration including corned beef & cabbage, real live Irish music (from the radio) and pints of specialty ales.

Dagda features a rich, malty body and underlying hoppiness. The brewers employed a small portion of black malt and a four-hour boil to give the beer its ruddy red color and sturdy body.

Dagda is named after named after the “good god” of the Celts who was in important figure in Irish mythology. Tales depict the Dagda as a figure of immense power, armed with a magic club and associated with a cauldron. The club was supposed to be able to kill nine men with one blow; but with the handle he could return the slain to life. The cauldron was known as the Undry and was said to be bottomless, from which no man left unsatisfied. He also possessed Daurdabla, a richly ornamented magic harp made of oak which, when the Dagda played it, put the seasons in their correct order; other accounts tell of it being used to command the order of battle.

Sidebar is Lompoc Brewing’s barrel tasting room and bottleshop and offers a dozen taps – including one reserved for cider – featuring a number of the brewery's barrel aged and seasonal specialty beers. It also offers a full bar and food menu.

A Portland staple since 1996, Lompoc Brewing creates seven flavorful year-round beers, plus a ridiculous number of seasonals. You can find Lompoc in 22 oz bottles and on draft at locations around town, and at its five neighborhood pubs: Fifth Quadrant and Sidebar in North Portland, Hedge House and Oaks Bottom in Southeast, and the Lompoc Tavern in NW Portland. Lompoc Brewing Old Tavern Rat Vertical Tasting at Sidebar December 23rd

Lompoc Brewing will be holding a vertical tasting of the ever popular Old Tavern Rat Barley Wine on December 23rd. If your like me and have a few bottles of Old tavern Rat in storage this is a great way to go and find out how the different years of barley wine have been aging.

Lompoc Brewing is holding a five-year vertical tasting of its popular Old Tavern Rat Barley Wine Ale. The event will take place on Tuesday, December 23 from 4pm to Midnight at Sidebar, 3901 N Williams Ave.

The years featured include 1998, 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2013. A flight of 4-oz pours of all five vintages costs $25.

Old Tavern Rat was named in honor of the famed Portland publican Don Younger, the business partner and close friend of Lompoc owner Jerry Fechter. Though the flavors vary with each batch, the beer is generally a very intense (like Don) strong ale with a malty body and plenty of caramel, dried fruit and roast flavors. The beer’s label is a painting of Younger done by the talented John Foyston, local beer writer and painter.

A Portland staple since 1996, Lompoc Brewing creates seven flavorful year-round beers, plus a ridiculous number of seasonals. You can find Lompoc in 22 oz bottles and on draft at locations around town, and at its five neighborhood pubs: Fifth Quadrant and Sidebar in North Portland, Hedge House and Oaks Bottom in SE, and the Lompoc Tavern in NW. Lompoc Pamplemousse In The House

On Tuesday freshpints.com got a nice little beer mail surprise from the fine folks at Lompoc Brewing.

Lompoc Brewings Pamplemousse Citrus IPA was released this summer as draft only addition to Lompoc's current lineup and is now being released in 22oz bottles as well . I'm looking forward to trying Pamplemousse out.

Let no risk go untaken: Lompoc Brewing celebrates scurvy
old sea captains with year-round Pamplemousse Citrus IPA

Press Release:
PORTLAND, Ore. – Earlier this summer, Lompoc Brewing released Pamplemouse Citrus IPA as part of its mainstay of beers, complementing its lineup of C-Note Imperial Pale Ale and Kick Axe Dry-Hopped Pale Ale.

Pamplemousse, French for grapefruit, is a deep golden, medium-bodied Citrus IPA that offers up refreshment that promises to satisfy all the senses. Four hop varieties – Centennial, Chinook, Meridian and Tettnang – along with real grapefruit juice, build a solid hop bitterness highlighted by citrus notes, both on the tongue and in the nose.

Pamplemousse is available on draft and in 22 oz. bottles at all Lompoc pubs as well as in various
establishments around the Northwest. The label design, by local brand builders Woody Adams and Andrew MacKenzie of Waamco, features a backdrop of a richly textured deep green tapestry with an intricate hop design; upon that sits a wall-mounted moose trophy sporting an armored helmet, reminiscent of the helmet in Lompoc’s logo. One of the helmet horns is skewering a half grapefruit.

The label design quickly prompted the creation of a mascot: Sir Pamplemousse, leader of the Kingdom of Lompoc. Sir Pamplemousse makes appearances at most Lompoc events and tastings, and randomly about town, sporting a helmet with moose antlers, a sword, a tunic, and clacking plastic grapefruits.

Sir Pamplemousse.

The legend of the Pamplemousse says that a scurvy old French sea captain was the first to discover grapefruit on the island of Barbados. Lompoc celebrates these scurvy captains and their discovery every damn day.

A Portland staple since 1996, Lompoc Brewing produces seven flavorful year-round beers, plus a ridiculous number of seasonals. You can find Lompoc in 22 oz bottles and on draft at locations around town, and at its five neighborhood pubs: Lompoc Tavern in NW Portland, Fifth Quadrant and Sidebar in North Portland, and Hedge House and Oaks Bottom in Southeast.
