Portland Brewing Celebrates Rose City Tradition with a Golden Brew

Lemon Blonde to Debut as the Official 2016 Rose Festival Beer
Portland, Ore. (April 28, 2016) — Get ready for summer! Portland Brewing kicks-off the season with a limited-edition beer made exclusively for the Portland Rose Festival. Lemon Blonde Ale celebrates the 109th annual Rose City tradition with a bright citrus aroma and refreshing flavor — making it the perfect addition while enjoying the festivities along Portland’s Waterfront.
Portland Brewing is the exclusive craft beer sponsor of the Rose Festival and brewers created the easy-drinking blonde ale with the festival’s fun atmosphere in mind. “Bright and golden in hue, the Lemon Blonde features wheat and Munich malts to create a creamy-smooth summertime treat,” notes head brewer Ryan Pappe. He adds, “Three different hop varietals provide a lovely herbal and citrus character. The Lemon Blonde is then kicked up a notch with dried lemon peel.” Just as the Rose Festival embraces the diverse interests and culture of the community, Lemon Blonde highlights the connection between the different hops. Delta, Cascade and Liberty hops blend perfectly together to deliver a crisp aroma.
Lemon Blonde Ale is available from May 27 through June 12 at CityFair and RoZone along Tom McCall Waterfront Park. For the first time, you can pick up the Rose Festival’s official brew at Fred Meyer growler fill stations inside select Portland metro locations throughout the festival. It will also be available at Portland Brewing’s Taproom, area pubs and restaurants until supplies run out.

Portland Brewing's Releases Raise the Roost A Belgian-style Red Ale

Courtesy of Portland Brewing Co
PORTLAND, Ore. (January 11, 2016) — For Portland Brewing, a new year means a new beer, and if Raise the Roost is any indication, 2016 is sure to excite. Brewed with a special strain of Belgian yeast, this Belgian-style Red Ale is a unique take on the traditionally popular springtime beer. You don’t have to wait until spring to enjoy the new brew — Raise the Roost debuts mid-January.
Head brewer, Ryan Pappe is no stranger to brewing Belgian ales, and while he and his team continue to use the same Belgian yeast strain that results in strong notes of fruit and spice, the brewery’s newest creation offers a distinct take on this classic style. “We love how vigorous that yeast is and the intense fruity taste it brings to any beer it ferments. To take a new direction, we focused on trying to bring a full maltiness to Raise the Roost,” says Pappe. “Knowing there are some great malts that really emphasize sweetness and body, that also bring hues of red, we chose to craft our own version of a Belgian Red Ale.”

Brewed using Liberty, Nugget and East Kent Golding hops, along with malts 2-Row Pale, CaraRed, Melanoidin, C-120 and Roast Barley, Raise the Roost Belgian-style Red Ale awakens the palate with a call of spicy, fruity yeast notes and a roasted malt character.     ABV: 6.2%  |  IBU: 30  |  OG: 15  |  SRM: 15

Look for Raise the Roost Belgian-style Red Ale in Oregon and Washington stores and bottle shops between January and March. You’ll find it in 22oz. bombers, 12oz. 6-packs, and of course, on draft at Portland Brewing’s taproom and select Portland-area bars and restaurants. Raise a glass and rule the roost!

Portland Brewings New Limited-Edition Scotch-style Ale Joins Benefit Beer Lineup

Courtesy of Portland Brewing Co
PORTLAND, Ore. (December 18, 2015) Stand up to the cold with Portland Brewing’s new neighborhood-inspired benefit beer, Wee Lad Scotch-style Ale. Brewed to get Oregonians through these chilly winter months, the draft-only seasonal beer exists for just a limited time. This hearty brew celebrates Ladd’s Addition, the uniquely beautiful and historic inner Southeast Portland stomping ground. Wee Lad also supports the Oregon Food Bank and its statewide mission to end hunger.

The traditional strong ales of Scotland inspired head brewer, Ryan Pappe, to brew this one a wee bit heavy to stand up to the rain and cold of an Oregon winter. “I love a good Scotch Ale, so we set out to brew our own take on this classic style,” says Pappe. “I lived for years near Ladd’s Addition, enjoying the unique layout of the streets and the rose gardens spread throughout. I consider Wee Lad to be like those gardens during the depths of winter: the rich and sweet malt goodness nourishes the soul like the fertile soil of the gardens nourishes the roses once the sunshine returns.” Brewed using Magnum and East Kent Golding hops, along with malts 2-Row Pale Barley, C-40 and Black Malt, Wee Lad’s full body features sweet notes of caramel with a hint of roast. Pappe believes, “you can count on this beer to revive you on a cold night.”
ABV: 8% | IBU: 35 | SRM: 17 | OG: 19

The Wee Lad Scotch-style Ale is the fifth and final installment in the 2015 Guild’s Lake Series of neighborhood-focused beers, joining Rico Sauvie Pumpkin Ale with Spices, Night Market Special Lager, ‘Round the Block and Pier Park Piney Pale. The Series derives its name from Guild’s Lake, a former wetlands in Northwest Portland where Portland Brewing is now located. A portion of the proceeds from each pint benefits the Oregon Food Bank and its holistic approach to ending hunger by bringing our community together to provide food, education and hope to our neighbors in need.
Wee Lad is now on draft at Portland Brewing’s Taproom, for a limited time, and will soon be available at other Portland-area bars and restaurants.

2104 Holiday Ale Fest Recap

Emily and I ventured out to the 2014 Holiday Ale Festival in Portland at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Thursday. We lucked out and made it into the festival and under the tents before the hours of torrential rain started. Once inside we enjoyed the day, making our way through a lot of great winter beers and some not so good winter beers, but as in previous years, we had fun.

rainy Pioneer Square x mas tree through the tents.

Top 5 Beers we sampled from the standard release beers :

  • McMenamins Edgefield Brewery:Lord of Misrule. So many great flavors in this Imperial Mocha Stout.  Lord of Misrule is a blend of coffee, cocoa, and habanero peppers aged in Rum Barrels.
  • Kells Brew Pub:Mic Stout AKA Boom Roaster. This Coffee Imperial Milk Stout was amazing...basically like drinking cold coffee with alcohlol. I would love to have a cup of this in the morning.
  • Lompoc Brewing Co:Pinot Barrel Aged Cheval de Trait Belge. We were drawn to this Belgian Strong Ale because it has a cool name - and the beer didn't let us down!  It's better a little warmer (no surprise there), and once it warmed up,  we got slight oak/barrel flavor, plums, and a nice maltiness.
  • Stone Brewing Co (Liberty Station):New Desecrator. Another great name, and yet what the hell is a Black Barley Wine? Turns out its basically Old Guardian with a twist to malt bill, which Stone refers to as "de-husked darkness." It's very smooth and hoppy like a black IPA with the nice alcohol presence and richness of a barley wine. It's an awesome combo - and it was Emily's first pour of the day, which set a high bar for the other beers.
  • Portland Brewing:2014 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. Just what is sounds like, this had nice bourbon notes, very smooth, and had a nice mouth feel. This was my first beer of the day.
Yes, we drank with Santa....even Santa checks out the beer list

That is just the top five beers we felt really stood out for us at the 2014 Holiday Ale Fest. We tasted over 30 beers from the standard beer lineup and then a bunch of  special beers (which cost two or three tickets instead of one like the standard beers.) The special beers were tapped just for the day, and included beers such as the 2011 Cascade Sang Noir and 2007 J.W. Lees Harvest Ale. Each day there will be some limited release surprises.

A couple of pointers for the folks who go today or tomorrow:
  • Don't feel bad pouring out a beer you don't like...these are heavy alcohol beers and you are tasting many of them, no need to drink the entire sample if you don't like it. We poured many beers out which gave us more room for others.
  •  Eat well before you go and then eat well during your sampling. Their are a couple of great food vendors at the event (like Bunk Sandwiches.)  Use them! You will need it to help consume the heavily alcohol. We sampled for 2 hours, ate a big pretzel, then went to the Yardhouse and consumed some heavy food - that helped a ton.
  • 21 & over only. Have fun, dress warmly and please drink responsibly.
