Stone Brewing Co. Releases Stone Saison, A Modern Take on a Farmhouse Classic

Courtsey of Stone Brewing Co
ESCONDIDO, CA (June 1, 2015) – Stone Brewing Co. is reintroducing its take on a traditional Belgian farmhouse ale, using Southern California ingredients grown on its 19-acre farm. Stone Saison is brewed with lemon zest, grains of paradise, lemon thyme, lavender and a small dose of habanero peppers, making it the quintessential refresher for the warm-weather months. Starting today, the beer returns in 12-ounce six-packs and on draft to retailers, restaurants and bars in markets where Stone beers are sold.

“Before we began brewing batches of this year’s release, we looked at a few ways to slightly improve on last year’s recipe for Stone Saison,” said Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “The herbs and spices remain the same, but we adjusted the proportions to create a refined combination highlighting each ingredient while offering a perfectly balanced flavor profile overall.”

Grown at the craft beer company’s Stone Farms, lemon thyme and lavender contribute floral, citrusy aromas and flavors, while lemon zest and grains of paradise add vibrant grapefruit and white pepper notes that mingle with restrained, earthy heat brought on by habanero peppers. These homegrown specialty edibles balance exceptionally well with the subtle banana and clove qualities courtesy of Stone’s house strain of Belgian yeast. The resulting beer finishes with a crisp, dry and refreshing mix of spices, red apple and a hint of heat.

Stone Saison will be available in limited quantities through the warm and sunny season. The beer’s citrusy, floral and spice qualities will shine through all summer long.

Pike Brewing Releases Washington State's First Varietal Beer, Pike Locale Skagit Valley Alba.

Introducing Pike Locale Skagit Valley Alba, Washington State’s first varietal beer.

Seattle, WA – June 1, 2015: Malt is the soul of beer; akin to grapes in wine. Brewers have an incredible diversity of hops to brew with and yet since Prohibition have been limited in malt choices. Now Pike Brewing Company is working directly with Skagit Valley farmers to grow barley varietals specifically for craft beer malt. These varietals will bring new, full and complex flavors that today’s craft beer drinkers want. We are introducing this with Pike Locale, a series of beers made with 100% Washington State ingredients that define our local terroir.

The first beer in the Pike Locale series is Skagit Valley Alba. Just in time for summer, Skagit Valley Alba is light and citrusy with a clean, earthy and nutty malt finish. Subtly seasoned with Yakima Valley hops, Pike Locale Skagit Valley Alba pours a beautiful spun gold color with crisp, pale foam. This limited release beer is available beginning June 1 on draft and in 22oz dinner bottles at local pubs, restaurants, grocers and bottle shops.

“We know that craft beer drinkers are passionate about drinking locally,” said Art Dixon, Pike Brewing Lead Brewer. “As brewers we’re excited to introduce them to all new flavors with these locally grown malts.”

Since Prohibition the barley grain supply for brewers has been dictated by macrobreweries, who prefer high protein, low flavor grains. There are over 11,000 varieties of barley and yet only a handful are used for malt today. For this beer, Pike Brewing is working with Skagit Valley Malting, a new craft maltster.  They are able to malt barley in smaller quantities, tailoring their process to the exact specifications each varietal needs to bring out its fullest flavor in craft beer.

“With Pike Locale we are reviving the pre-Prohibition tradition of sourcing quality ingredients as close to the brewery as possible,” notes Pike Brewing Founder and President, Charles Finkel. “Prohibition dealt a blow to brewers and small farmers alike. And since that time craft brewers have done an admirable job brewing delicious beers with a very limited palate of malts. Pike Locale ushers in a new chapter with these locally grown, varietal malts that will introduce beer drinkers to new flavors.”

Courtesy of Pike Brewing Co
Skagit Valley Alba’s base malt was grown by Knutzen Farms (Skagit Valley) and includes malts from Palouse Colony Farm (Whitman County), Washington Bulb Co. and Hedlin Farms (Skagit Valley). Its Cascade, Centennial and Mosaic hops come from the Yakima Valley and its honey from Salish Lodge bees in Snohomish County. It is brewed with water from the Cedar River Watershed and uses Pike #1 yeast.

Future beers in the Pike Locale series, featuring other heritage and varietal malts, will be available as the grains become available and as Pike Brewing Company’s brewers create new recipes for them.

Double Mountain Cluster Single-Hop IPA Gets A New Look

Courtesy of Double Mountain
Hood River, OR - June 1st, 2015 -A Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom seasonal favorite, the Cluster Single-Hop IPA returns in bottles for the third year with a fresh new label. This unique and versatile IPA is currently available on draft and by bottle at the Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom located in downtown Hood River. Cluster can be found throughout the Northwest, British Columbia, and Southern California in early June 2015.

Courtesy of Double Mountain Brewery
"We are excited about the rework of the Cluster label. The starry moonscape really stands out on the shelves." Head Brewmaster/owner Matt Swihart talks about this year's Cluster batch. "For a magical reason that remains a mystery to me, the farmer gods treated us to an excellent crop on the Clusters in 2014, so this year's beer is exceptional crisp, tasty and wonderfully balanced. This is my favorite year so far... but look out 2016."

Cluster
Single-Hop IPA
7.3% ABV, 85 BU

Description: The oft forgotten Cluster hop was the dominant hop in the US brewing industry for centuries.  With the Cluster, we’re bringing this beauty of a hop back into the limelight.  Clusters were added at every stage of the brewing process, allowing a good taste of the hop’s complexity and versatility.  A more delicate floral note at the top leads you deeper into a grove of pineapple and orange, and a dewy herbal character follows closely behind.  It glows like an early summer sunset, has a clean bitterness, and dried out nicely,
making it highly drinkable.  ABV 7.3%, 85 BU

Try it for yourself and see how hop and fruit flavor meld together! 6.2% ABV Unknown IBU

Burnside Brewing: Peaches of Immortality
The Legend of Peaches of Immortality: Peaches symbolizing immortality (or the wish for a long and healthy life) are a common symbol in Chinese art, appearing in depictions or descriptions in a number of fables, paintings, and other forms of art, often in association with thematically similar iconography, such as certain deities or immortals
The immortals waited six thousand years before gathering for this magnificent feast; the peach tree put forth leaves once every thousand years and it required another three thousand years for the fruit to ripen. Statues depicting Xi Wangmu's attendants often held three peaches. 3,000 years of life after the consumption of a single peach. 6.2% ABV 3 IBU.
Burnside Brewing/Reverend Nat's Hard Cider: Fruit of the Garden of Good & Evil

Elysian Brewing of Seattle, Washington and Payette Brewing of Boise, Idaho teamed up for the first time to brew this Northwest huckleberry sour. The beer is light, tart and bright freakin’ PINK! It’s brewed in the (mostly) traditional Berliner Weisse style, employs a grain bill of half wheat and half barley, is soured with Lactobacillus, and weighs in at a thirst quenching 2.8% ABV. Add to this a whopping two-and-a-half pounds per barrel of delicious Idaho-grown huckleberries and you have the perfect antidote for these hot summer days.

Kells Brew Pub: Raspberry Creamcicle
Poured on Nitro. This beer has a nose of raspberries with a smooth and full but light body. The nitro makes it creamy and mellow and the finish is tart from the fruit. It is so easy to drink. Brewed with 6-row, wheat, corn, rice, flaked barley, and a healthy dose of biscuit malt. All tettnanger hops and fermented with 1056 ale yeast before being lagered an additional 6 weeks with Raspberries added in the brite tank. OG 1047 FG 1008 18 IBU 4.86% abv  SRM 4.5 before fruit

Lucky Labrador Brew Pub: Banana Bread
Wheat, chocolate, and aromatic malts give this barely hopped brown ale a malty aroma and smooth mouthfeel. Banana, clove, vanilla, and ginger was added to the beer during boiling, fermentation, and conditioning to bring all the flavors of a banana bread Grandma would be proud of. We hope you enjoy this unique ale. 4.76% ABV 3 IBU

Oakshire Brewing: Stone Free Cranberry Ginger Wild Ale
Stone Free is a blend of a Brett fermented Berliner Weisse and a wine barrel aged sour golden ale aged on Cranberries and Ginger. It is deep pink in color with tart fruit, funky and bready aromas and a background waft of ginger. Stone Free has both sweet and tart flavors intertwined with mild spicy ginger and a crisp and dry tangy finish. 5.1% ABV.

Fort George Brewery: Pucker Pi Beer
Kettle Soured Strawberry-Rhubarb Wheat Ale
Light Strawberry and tart rhubarb balance a mild acidity from kettle souring. 4.9% ABV

Laurelwood Brewing: There Gose the Neighborhood
Gose is an old wheat beer style originated in Leipzig, Germany. It is a beer that uses Lactobacillus bacteria to acidify the beer giving it a tart, lemony flavor. Gose’s are spiced with coriander and salt to give them a deep and savory character which balances nicely with the tart finish.  We used Jacobsen Sea salt from the Oregon coast to give it a rich sea salt flavor. The beer itself is hazy and light, like many wheat beers, and is very refreshing. We added Oregon Fruit Boysenberry puree to our Gose for the Fruit Beer Fest which added a pink/ purple color and mild berry flavor.  We hope you enjoy this delicious beer, Prost! ABV: 5.1% IBU:  8

Lompoc Brewing: Golden Pear
A golden ale fermented in stainless steel with pears and aged on the pears for a year. Subtle notes of pear with a slight tartness. 5.0% ABV

Upright Brewing: B.B. Stout
named in honor of the late B.B. King, is a straightforward beer with big flavors. Fermented in our open top tanks, the beer maintains a robust profile typical of the stout style with the addition of over 200 pounds of blueberry, adding one extra flavorful layer to the beer.
Widmer Brothers Brewing: Fresh Strawberries
Tart Farmhouse Saison with Strawberries
Fresh Strawberries is a collaboration brew with Coda Brewing from Aurora, Colorado.  Using Saison as a base, we added fresh strawberries and then kettle soured the beer with Lactobacillus to increase the tartness and balance out the sweetness from the fruit. French Sasion yeast allowed us to pull some subtle spicy notes in the aroma and flavor. 5.4 % ABV.

Ciders/Other:

2 Towns Ciderhouse: Peach Saison Cider
Tart fresh-pressed NW apples fermented with peaches and an authentic French saison yeast. Dry, slightly spicy and phenolic, with lots of big clean fresh peach aromatics. Small batch, limited release run. 6%abv

plum and blackcurrant cider.
Yamhill County was once the prune capital of the world, for Hedgerow Fruits we combine Italian prune plums with blackcurrants for a dry tart cider. Hedgerow Fruits is our tribute to the late English beer writer Michael Jackson, who was fond of referring to “notes of hedgerow fruits” as a beer descriptor. Made for the Portland Fruit Beer Fest, Hedgerow Fruits is a limited release from Cider Riot! 6.9% ABV

SPOKANE, WA (May 29, 2015) The winners of the 2015 Australian International Beer Festival were announced and No-Li brought two new medals back to Spokane!

Mosh Pit Tart Cherry and Rise & Grind were recognized for their creativity and quality in brewing - landing No-Li their 15th and 16th international awards.

Head Brewer, Carey Fristoe, and Brewing Operations Manager, Damon Scott, celebrated the brewery’s recent medals with an eye on the future. “We are just getting started.  We rise each morning and grind it out with a passion for mind-bending recipes with no boundaries,” says Carey.

“We share our passion for uniqueness and innovation through beers like a milk stout with freshly roasted Gemelli coffee beans or 1.5 pounds of cherries per gallon in Mosh Pit Tart Cherry,” says Damon.

In the spirit of creativity and brewing beer with no boundaries, No-Li recently released Brass Monkey (a golden ale brewed with orange peel) as its new Expo Series summer seasonal and Defacto (a whiskey barrel-aged imperial black IPA) as a part of its growing Barrel-Aged Series line-up.

Oui, Chef is available right now on draft and will be available everywhere in bottles in June. The new Session Double IPA is a test-run on a new IPA the brewers are particularly excited about that may become a new year-round IPA exclusively for Breakside's upcoming 12oz bottles and 6-packs, we look forward to hearing your feedback!

Back to the Future IPA
- a collaboration with our friends at Fremont Brewing Co. for Portland Beer Week

Courtesy of  Breakside Brewing
This IPA is a cross-border collaboration with Seattle's Fremont Brewing. We planned the beer together and each brewed a batch of it for our cities' respective Beer Weeks. When we set out to do this beer together, we knew that we wanted to make a big IPA and showcase some fun hop varietals that don't get much attention..yet.

We specifically chose new varietals that we think have a lot of promise, and it's named after the futuristic hops used in each version: Jarrylo and Equinox in Fremont's, and Azacca and Ella in ours. These beers very might well introduce you to new hop varietals that will be front and center in many IPAs to come.

Oui, Chef
saison with spelt and fennel

Oui, Chef is a straw-colored farmhouse ale brewed with European spelt and two types of fennel. We use both fennel seed and fennel pollen at different points in the brewing process to layer in the complex savory and herbal notes from the spice. Originally brewed as part of our Chef Collaboration series in 2012, this beer was designed by our brewers and Chef Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon Restaurant in Portland.

This is the third release in our new Farmhouse, Fruit and Funk Series. This set of six beers--each available for two months of the year--showcases the deft and playful ways in which our brewers use non-traditional ingredients to make complex, flavorful beers. From lychee and yellow chilies to Oregon-grown peaches and California kumquats, this line of beers stakes a claim for the "culinary beer" as an emergent, delicious and elegant new beer style.

Malts: German Pilsner and Spelt, Crystal 15L
Hops: cascade
Special ingredients: Fennel seed and fennel pollen

Old World IPA
a draft-only ipa with intense floral and herbal notes

Courtesy of Breakside Brewing
This draft only release is a beer that evolved from our award-winning English Pale Ale, which re-tooled to give it a bolder hop presence and higher alcohol. In other words, we wanted to put our pale ale on steroids and turned it into an IPA. Thus, Old World IPA was born. While the aggressive use of hops is very American, this beer's roots are quintessentially European. We've sourced world-class English malt to give the beer a beguiling softness; Slovenian hops used throughout the brewing process give the beer its distinctive floral, herbal, woody and spicy notes.

We hope that this beer shows you a whole new realm of IPAs--a style that was born of the Old World and perfected in the Northwest. Available on draft only during May 2015.

Malts: Two Row, British Pale, Melanoidin, CaraMunich
Hops: Crystal, Styrian Goldings

Session Double IPA
our favorite hoppy test batch ever. Widely available for the first time.

Our brewers love hops. They love them so much that they are always tracking down new varietals, coming up with new combinations, and seeking to extract the most flavor and aroma they can from the beautiful hops we have in the Northwest. Often times, the beers they make with these new hops and schedules are done in small batches at our pub, where they are served on draft to our regulars. Every once in a while, the brewers get so excited about a new hoppy beer that they decide to immediately scale it up to share it with a wider audience. Session Double IPA is one of those beers.

This IPA uses Mosaic, Cascade and Columbus hops to make for one of the most expressive, dank and tropical beers we've ever made. Strong resinous notes are coupled with hints of citrus and big juicy flavors of mango and tangerine. The bitterness is balanced against a simple malt bill to allow for these hops to really shine.

Malts: Two Row, Munich
Hops: Mosaic, Columbus and Cascade
