Stone Brewing Closes Epic First Quarter

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co

ESCONDIDO, CA (May 2, 2017) – Stone Brewing, is off to a hot start in 2017, reporting 18% growth versus the prior year.  Stone Brewing’s performance is far outpacing both the year-to-date, IRI-stated grocery craft category growth of 4.4% and the category’s 52-week growth rate of 6.4%.

Stone Brewing’s explosive growth is fueled by its core beers both familiar and new.  First, the familiar stalwart Stone IPA, launched 20 years ago and refreshed just over a year ago, is up 8.2% demonstrating continued opportunity to convert more hop heads to its iconic West Coast style.  Relative newcomer, Stone Delicious IPA, launched nationally in 2015, is up a whopping 142% over the same period.  Stone buttressed these core beer advancements with two new year-round beers: Stone Ripper and Stone Tangerine Express IPA.

Launched in southern California in December and nationally in January, Stone Ripper is one of the top five new six-packs in US Food according to IRI.  And launched in late January, Stone Tangerine Express IPA depletions year-to-date make it both the fifth largest draft IPA brand and the hottest new 22oz.

Rounding out its quarter one performance is Stone’s seasonal mixed pack offering.  The Stone All IPA Mixed Pack, including four different IPAs: Stone Pataskala Red X IPA, Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0, Stone Delicious IPA and featuring an in-pack exclusive, first-ever Stone Hop Revolver IPA is up 14.7%.

“2017 is off  to a great start for Stone Brewing both on premise and off premise and it‘s showing us that craft beer fans nationwide appreciate our genre-defining styles of IPAs and our new complementary San Diego style Pale Ale – in Stone Ripper,” said Dominic Engels, Stone Brewing CEO. “In a category that seems to be talking more and more about slowdown, we are pleased to be talking about continued double-digit growth.”

From local to global distribution

Stone Brewing Distribution is expected to expand availability to all states, in addition to District of Columbia and Puerto Rico by May.  On the international front, they are in 35 countries, including more than 20 in Europe, plus Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Costa Rica and more. Stone Brewing – Berlin in its first full year is on pace to brew and sell over 20,000 Hectoliters.

“It’s been really amazing to see the traction on a global basis with fans and retailers thus far,” added Engels.  “We’re excited as we look toward the horizon with even more expansion and distribution plans across the European market and beyond.”

Celebrating success

Stone Brewing was recently recognized by RateBeer with awards in six categories, including being named “Best Brewery in California”.  On August 18-19, they will celebrate the Stone 21st Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival, in San Marcos, CA.

Stone Brewing to Open Napa, California Tap Room and Pilot Brewery

Courtesy of Stone Brewing. Rendition Napa Stone Brewing Tap Room - Napa Design Partners

Renovations begin on 10,000 square-foot historic downtown building

ESCONDIDO, CA (May 20, 2016) – Stone Brewing will begin renovations to a 10,000 square-foot iconic building in downtown Napa, bringing its bold and flavorful craft beer to the region well-known for its amazing wine. Stone’s newest outpost, located on 3rd Street and Soscol Avenue, will include a pilot brewing system, a dining experience, growler fills and Stone merchandise.

“The historic Borreo building is the perfect space for us to put down our roots in Napa,” said Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO & co-founder. “Not only is it literally made of stone, it’s one of downtown’s most iconic links to the 19th century and a landmark that’s been vacant for the past 15 years. We recognize the high quality of wine that comes from the region and the appreciation that Napa Valley locals and visitors have for fresh, well-crafted drink. We are elated to become a contributing part of such an artisanal town.”

The 10-barrel pilot brew system will enable brewers to produce Stone’s iconic bold and innovative beer using core recipes as well as indigenous ingredients from the local geography. The Stone Brewing Tap Room - Napa will fill growlers and serve Stone’s year-round beers as well as special releases brewed onsite.

Stone’s food philosophy will carry over to its newest Tap Room with a dining experience that incorporates the local Napa flavors for enjoyment on premise or to take away picnic style. Stone proudly specializes in locally grown, small-farm ingredients and features an eclectic menu of world-inspired cuisine and a unique take on comfort food. As strong advocates for environmental responsibility and high-quality food, Stone will purchase local and small-farm organic produce from the Napa region. Making the most of outstanding weather is something the San Diego-based company is quite familiar with. Locals and tourists visiting Stone Brewing Tap Room - Napa will enjoy an outdoor seating area complete with communal tables, fire pits and views overlooking downtown Napa.

The historic Borreo building, named for the family that formerly owned the historic stone structure, is an Italianate Renaissance design made from native-cut stone. It was completed in 1877 and has been vacant since 2001. While keeping historic elements in place, Stone plans to transform the building’s western wall, adding expansive doors to a stunning garden facing the Napa River.

“I’m a huge Napa fan,” said Koch. “I’ve been visiting for more than 20 years and I first toured through the Borreo Building nearly five years ago. We’ve tried a few times to make something happen there, and are thrilled to finally see it come to fruition!”

With an anticipated opening in 2017, Stone Brewing Tap Room - Napa joins two expansion projects already underway for the growing company. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - Berlin will open its doors in Germany this summer. Stone Brewing - Richmond will begin supplying fresh Stone beer from its 250-barrel brewhouse in July.

Stone Brewing Releasing Encore Edition of Stone 6th Anniversary Porter

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co
ESCONDIDO, CA (April 18, 2016) – Stone Brewing’s 20th Anniversary celebration continues with the encore edition of Stone 6th Anniversary Porter. Beginning this week, this imperial smoked porter conditioned with American and French oak chips will arrive in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. True to the Stone 20th Anniversary Encore series, Stone maintained the original recipe and features artwork evocative of its first time on store shelves. Fans will find either the classic label or a new version with back-label text that pays homage to the beer’s history.

What unfolds on the new 2016 label is a tribute to the recipe experimentation and an oak chip fermenter mishap that occurred while attempting to amplify Stone Smoked Porter. Stone celebrated its first five anniversaries by increasingly intensifying the hop character of Stone 1st Anniversary IPA (aka Stone IPA). By 2002, we reached a point where additional hops could not realistically be added to the recipe. So instead, to keep up with the same “go big” philosophy, Stone cranked up its year-round mainstay porter not one…but three notches! More malt, more hops and the component of French and American oak were introduced to accentuate the smokiness, chocolate and roast coffee flavors along with adding subtle notes of toffee, dried berries and vanilla. To recap the mishap, oak chips jammed a fermenter valve that, when we attempted to clear the issue, resulted in this dark-as-night wonder shooting out of the fermenter like a fire hose…and sending a lot of beer down the drain. This resulted in significant losses, which made it one of our rarest anniversary releases.

Adding more to the backstory is the classic 2002 label, which was dubbed a “logophobic nightmare.” At the time, Team Stone was asked to submit words for Stone CEO & co-founder Greg Koch to incorporate into his notoriously verbose back bottle copy. Words like “lurpy” and “Huggy Bear” proved to create such nonsense that, well, this very short-lived anniversary tradition didn’t last a year longer. Consider this label an invitation to identify all the ludicrous offenders.

logophobia
[law-guh-foh-bee-uh, log-uh-]
1) Refers to the condition of having an abnormal, extreme, and persistent fear of words.
2) Something Greg Koch never experienced prior to 2002, but has periodically since then.

The Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series lineup can be found online here. In addition to rebrewing fan-favorite beers this year, Stone is celebrating twenty years of true craft with a historical timeline chronicling the company's two decades. Fans are encouraged to share their own personal Stone memories throughout the year using #Stone20.

Stone 6th Anniversary Porter is ready to be enjoyed fresh or stored for several years. With age and proper cellaring temperatures (55°F or lower), the smokiness may subside, resulting in a beer that further highlights sweet chocolate flavor.

Stone Brewing Releasing Arrogant Bastard In Cans

Stone Brewing has announced the Release of Arogant Bastard in cans, see info below.

Hated by many. Loved by few.

Ever since I was first unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1997, I have believed pandering to the lowest common denominator represents the height of tyranny. In my unprecedented and uncompromising celebration of intensity, I openly challenged these commodity beer overloads and their multi-million dollar ad campaigns.

Courtesy of Stone Brewing / Arrogant Brewing CO

In 2016, I will once again find a way to wreck havoc amongst them on their own turf, in their own preferred method of distribution. The can. Unlike the fizzy yellow facsimiles of beer, while I may be canned—I will never be contained. I am Liquid Arrogance.

CHEERS TO ME!

about arrogant bastard brewing

Since Arrogant Bastard Ale was first unleashed upon the unsuspecting public in 1997, the brand has been braving bold territory, and upsetting dandies, milquetoasts and fizzy yellow beer drinkers in great numbers. Massively successful, and ever full of vip and vinegar, Arrogant Bastard Ale split off from the restrictive confines of Stone Brewing in 2015. And now, the brethren of Liquid Arrogance are free to explore, cavort and roam how they damn well see fit. For those Worthy few that wish to gaze upon the musings of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Arrogant Bastard or other Bastard beers, follow along via Facebook, InstagramTwitter and ArrogantBastard.com.

Stone Brewing Releasing 2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout and Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA

Courtesy of Stone Brewing CO
Stone Brewing Releases 2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout
Sinfully dark and decadent, this stout rivals the riches of a Russian Czar
ESCONDIDO, CA (March 28, 2016) – A rich, dark decadence is rising again to seduce even the most reluctant palates. A standout among Stone Brewing’s typically hop-centric lineup, Stone Imperial Russian Stout is highly regarded for its reputation among craft beer aficionados and collectors. Beginning this week, 2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout will start arriving in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at bars, retailers and restaurants in markets where Stone beer is sold.

Originally conceived by Stone President, co-founder and original Brewmaster Steve Wagner, the recipe for Stone Imperial Russian Stout has been tweaked very little since the beer’s debut in 2000. By using British black malt and British roasted barley for the grain bill, the resulting beer has a dark opaque appearance and a roasty, coffee-like aroma. Intensely bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavors give way to hints of anise and fruity esters provided by the yeast. Enjoy with patience. As the stout warms, its malt qualities open up, becoming smoother drinking exhibiting stronger roast and chocolate character.
In addition to its perfect RateBeer score of 100, Stone Imperial Russian Stout owns a “world-class” rating of 96 on BeerAdvocate as well as a 2014 U.S. Open Beer Championship Gold Award in the Imperial Stout category. Despite the craft brewing world's escalation of imperial stouts with ever-bigger bodies and higher alcohol-by-volume (ABV), Stone has maintained Wagner's original creation from 2000…feeling that the beer is perfect as is!

2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout is ready to be enjoyed fresh or stored at proper cellaring temperatures (55°F or lower) for several months or even years. Brewed to align with the authentic, historical style of an imperial Russian stout, this beer is massive, and a great representation of the style originating from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever heftier, ABV-elevated English stouts.

The Dark Side of Fresh Rises Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA Releases This Week
IN A GALAXY NOT TOO FAR AWAY (A time not too long ago) – The seemingly sinister Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA by Stone Brewing has risen from sources of dark malted barley. Brewed specifically NOT to last, this immensely hopped black IPA refuses to rest until it makes the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs to hopheads in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at select retailers nationwide.

With the balanced support of pleasingly smooth malts, Vic Secret, Ella and (of course!) Galaxy lead the massive hop addition in this predominately Oz system hop profile. When combined and added, the hops produce nuances of dankness and tropical fruit qualities that are evident in the aroma, with a taste that is distinctively hoppy. This devastatingly dark force is out to restore freshness and appreciation to the black IPA subsect in cantinas and lairs across select parts of the known universe.
A groundbreaking mission, the Stone Enjoy By IPA series facilitated a paradigm shift in how Stone and its distribution partners work together to deliver the most devastatingly fresh IPAs on the planet to craft beer enthusiasts. Just as on its light-side counterpart, the “Enjoy By” date sends an overt message to its fresh-seeking fans on the bottle, indicating precisely the date by which the black IPA must be consumed to enjoy maximum freshness. In the unlikely event that any Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA remains on the shelves on May 5, the Revenge of the Fifth will strike in the form of empty shelves and draft lines.

Hopheads only have 37 days to get their hands on this black IPA before its whereabouts are completely unknown…

For those social media savvy imbibers, Stone has a dedicated Web page, enjoyby.stonebrewing.com, that captures fans’ experiences with the Stone Enjoy By IPA series and all of its variations. Fans are encouraged to share posts using the hashtag #EnjoyBy on Twitter and Instagram or by checking in on Untappd. Tweets, photos and check-ins are then posted on the page’s live social feed.

Stone Brewing Introduces Stone Americano Stout

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co
An imperial American stout brewed with some serious beans

ESCONDIDO, CA (Feb. 3, 2016)This week Stone Brewing is releasing a bold and rich stout brewed with an abundant dose of whole espresso-roast coffee beans from San Diego-based roaster Ryan Bros. Coffee. A limited seasonal release, Stone Americano Stout is a modern-day throwback making its debut this week in 12-ounce six-packs at retailers and on draft to restaurants and bars where Stone beer is sold.

Coffee roasting has risen to become a true art form, and recently, craft brewers have embraced the depth, complexity and nuances created by this unconventional brewing ingredient. A nod to fan-favorite 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout, Stone Americano Stout revisits a style our fans loved with the same Ryan Bros. coffee that left us buzzing for more almost three years ago.
Thanks to the malt bill, roasted and deep cocoa flavors are present to perfectly balance the strong notes of coffee. For each 120-barrel batch, 250 pounds of beans were added to the mash kettle and post-fermentation, creating prevalent coffee character with a lingering bitterness. This beer is made complete with a hop bill composed of classic American varieties, which invigorate the coffee taste with a fruity and citrusy hop presence.

Fans will be able to find Stone Americano Stout in limited quantities through May. Enjoy fresh or store at proper cellaring temperatures (55°F or lower). Over time, all flavors will meld together and allow for more toasted grain character to shine through. Regardless of when you choose to experience the intense coffee qualities, rest assured…not a single decaf bean was used in the process.

Stone Brewing Releases Stone Pataskala Red X IPA

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co
New release features Red X malt and a massive dose of hops

ESCONDIDO, CA (Feb. 1, 2016) – Stone Brewing is introducing Stone Pataskala Red X IPA, a red IPA brewed with newly available Red X malt from Germany-based BESTMALZ and featuring a backstory as vibrant as its hop bill. Starting this week, the limited seasonal release will debut in 12-ounce six-packs to retailers and on draft to restaurants and bars where Stone beer is sold.

Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele discovered Red X malt through homebrew circles and was intrigued to experiment with this uniquely malted barley. Rarely used in hoppy beers, the special German malt variety is typically reserved for German amber lagers, Irish red ales and other mildly hopped beers and is known for creating a deep crimson hue. Given Stone’s well-documented obsession with hops, an abundant hop bill was (without hesitation) considered the perfect combination for a trial.

Stone Pataskala Red X IPA may strike a familiar note to loyal Stone fans, as it was first brewed as a small-batch beer to support a special cause. In early 2015, Stone CEO & co-founder Greg Koch received a letter from a determined high school student in Pataskala that explained the dire situation of her high school’s extracurricular and educational programs, which were facing the ax because a funding levy had repeatedly failed to get enough votes. There was one last chance with a vote coming that May. Could he help? Koch, who grew up in Pataskala, was touched by the plea and promised to brew a special beer with proceeds to further benefit school arts and music programs should the measure pass. The hope was that it might help the community to support the cause. Fortunately, this time the people of Pataskala rallied in support as well and the levy passed! Stone’s CEO made good on his promise and personally celebrated with locals in September 2015 upon the delivery of the beer to Pataskala and surrounding areas. More than $10,000 was raised for the Watkins Memorial High School Band Boosters and Ally’s Warriors of Stone Foundation.

Mosaic, Amarillo and Cascade hops provide this red IPA with an upfront fruity and piney aroma, transcending into stone fruit flavor and pleasingly lingering bitterness. Brewed with late hop additions and generously dry-hopped, the 7.3 percent alcohol-by-volume beer is incredibly citrus-forward, yet balanced by cereal notes and biscuit undertones from the malt. When all the ingredients are combined, this IPA showcases the signature qualities of hop-forward Stone beers.

To fully experience the generous dose of hops and its unique malt bill, Stone Pataskala Red X IPA should be enjoyed within the 90-day “enjoy by” date printed on the bottle neck. Fans will be able to find this seasonal release in limited quantities through May.

Stone Brewing Rereleases Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout
Celebrate Stone’s 20-year history with the 20th Anniversary Encore Series

ESCONDIDO, CA (Jan. 25, 2016) – This year marks Stone Brewing’s 20th year of brewing bold, flavorful and memorable craft beers and with this monumental occasion comes a tribute to fans for their two decades of steadfast support. The Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series will reintroduce previously brewed fan-favorite beers, each for a limited time, throughout the anniversary year. The first in the celebratory series for 2016 is Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, making its comeback this week in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at select retailers, restaurants and bars in markets where Stone beer is sold.

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co
In 2008, as the 12th anniversary approached, hops were in scarce supply. The brewing team embraced the worldwide hop shortage and brewed something rich and malty, pulling bitterness from pure cacao added at the end of the boil in place of hops. At the time, it was a rare venture into a realm explored less often by our brewers, and the outcome was highly acclaimed by fans (and still is to this day). Eight years later, Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout has been rebrewed to the exact specifications of the original recipe and features artwork evocative of the first time it hit store shelves. The onyx-colored, malt-forward stout offers a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and sensual chocolate flavors and aromatics.

The Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series lineup can be found online here. In addition to rereleasing eight fan-favorite beers this year, Stone Brewing will salute its 20 years with commemorative bottle caps and online stories designed to inspire the public to reminisce about their own Stone moments at Stone20th.com. The historical timeline will develop throughout the year, chronicling the company's two decades, and fans can share their personal Stone memories throughout the year using #Stone20.

Just like the original batch, Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout may be enjoyed fresh or stored for several years. With age and proper cellaring temperatures, the bitterness will subside, resulting in a more refined beer that showcases sweet chocolate flavor.
