Speakeasy Ales & Lagers Releases Scarface Imperial Stout: Original & Barrel-Aged

Courtesy of Speakeasy Ales & lagers
San Francisco, CA - (November 10, 2015) Out of the shadows and ready to rumble, Scarface Imperial Stout is back with a one-two punch from Speakeasy Ales & Lagers. The man, the myth, the legend, will arrive in stores and on draft in two bruising variations. Get a taste of mob life this fall and winter by enjoying the original Scarface Imperial Stout, and a special bourbon barrel-aged edition.
Behind its fierce black exterior, Scarface Imperial Stout is a complex blend of flavors. A rich combination of grains was used, including two-row pale malt, carahell, dark crystal malt, de-bittered black malt, flaked oats, and roasted barley. Columbus hops were added for bittering, while Magnum hops were thrown into the whirlpool for a touch of earthy and floral notes.
The beer pours a viscous inky black with a mocha colored head. Enticing aromas of bittersweet espresso and toffee lead to the first sip, which hits you with chocolate, roasted malt, dark bread, and burnt caramel. Scarface Imperial Stout ends with a dry finish, and weighs in at 9.5% alcohol by volume and 50 IBUs.
If that’s not enough, the bourbon barrel-aged edition of Scarface Imperial Stout will assault your senses with sweet caramel, oak, and vanilla. A fresh batch of Scarface was blended into a 2014 vintage that was aged in American whiskey barrels for over one year. The resulting beer is wonderfully balanced and delicious. Drink it now or age the wax-topped bottle in your cellar for a few years.
Both editions of Scarface Imperial Stout are being shipped to distributors this week and will arrive in stores by the end of November. Can’t wait that long? Visit the Speakeasy Ales & Lagers Tap Room for the Scarface Imperial Stout Release Party on Friday, November 13.
Original and barrel-aged versions will be served on draft, along with several vintages. New and vintage bottles will also be available to go. Quantity restrictions will apply to purchases of older bottles. Don’t miss this unique opportunity. Enjoy a glass or taste through the ages with a flight.

About Speakeasy Ales & Lagers

In 1997 a wily band of bootleggers led by homebrewer Forest Gray were inspired to bring their exceptional brews from the underground to the masses, defiantly producing small batches of beer in a secret warehouse in San Francisco. Starting with a single, iconic beer, Prohibition Ale, Speakeasy now brews a wide array of acclaimed beers including Big Daddy IPA, Payback Porter, Double Daddy, Scarface Imperial Stout and many more, which are distributed across the entire West Coast and other major U.S. markets.

Samuel Adams Releases 2015 Batch Of Samuel Adams Utopias

SAMUEL ADAMS RELEASES 2015 BATCH OF EXTREME BARREL-AGED BEER, SAMUEL ADAMS UTOPIAS
Rare, Limited Edition Beer Hits Shelves in November
Boston, November 10, 2015–The brewers at Samuel Adams today announced the limited release of highly-coveted Samuel Adams Utopias, a beer unlike any other. Only the ninth batch brewed since the first release in 2002, this year’s Utopias, like previous vintages, was brewed in small batches using traditional methods, blended with previous vintages going as far back as 1992, then finished in the Barrel Room at the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery.

About Samuel Adams Utopias
For beer fanatics, Samuel Adams Utopias has become one of the most sought-after beers on earth. Meant to be savored like a fine cognac or port, Utopias is a rich, uncarbonated extreme beer known for its extraordinary flavor profile. Utopias has aromas of wood, toffee, cocoa, raisin and maple, which hint at its distinctive flavors, which range from hints of molasses, earthy wood, dates, and light smoke to nuts and toffee.

With each new batch of Utopias, the brewers at Sam Adams push for a complex flavor profile, and during this process have created brews with alcohol levels reaching over 30% ABV; this year’s beer is 28% ABV and is best enjoyed as a two ounce pour in a snifter glass at room temperature. While some of the barrels have reached over 30% alcohol, the brewers blend down because the goal is to craft complex flavors, not an extreme alcohol percentage.
Courtesy of Samuel Adams
About the Barrel-Aging Process
For the 2015 Utopias, the Sam Adams brewers used a variety of malts for the brewing process and during fermentation used several strains of yeast, including one traditionally reserved for champagne. The beer was then blended with Utopias vintages from previous years including some that have been aging for more than 20 years in the Barrel Room. Aging the beer over a longer period of time accentuates the beer’s distinct vanilla notes and creates aromas of ginger and cinnamon. Some of this aged beer is over twenty years old, old enough to drink itself.

About the Brewing Process
Utopias is brewed using traditional methods. The brewers begin with a blend of two-row Caramel and Munich malts that imparts a rich, deep amber color. Noble hops – Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Spalt Spalter and Tettnang Tettnanger – are also added to lend complexity and balance. During fermentation, several yeast strains are used, including one normally reserved for champagne which the brewers call a “ninja yeast.” This fresh beer is then blended with a variety of different barrel-aged beers and “finished” in a variety of barrels to impart additional complexity and flavor.

About the Finishing Barrel Process
This release of Samuel Adams Utopias also uses a blend of beer finished in a variety of barrels. “Finishing” is a creative way for the brewers to impart additional flavor from a variety of barrels before the beer is bottled. This final step of finishing the beer lasts several months before the beer is bottled and imparts flavors ranging from fruit like cherry and raisin to chocolate, leather and oak. The multi-step and lengthy process results in flavors reminiscent of a rich vintage Port, fine Cognac, or aged Sherry, while feeling surprisingly light on the palate.

New this year, the brewers used White Carcavelos wine barrels to finish the beer, in addition to barrels that once housed cognac, Armagnac, ruby port, sweet Madeira, and Buffalo Trace Bourbon. White Carcavelos wine barrels help to amplify the dried fruit and oak flavors of this year’s Utopias. Carcavelos wines are blended and fortified like a port, are off dry and topaz colored with nutty aromas and flavors. Carcavelos comes from a small region of Portugal and the barrels are very rare, which made the Sam Adams brewers all the more excited to experiment with them as finishing barrels.

Founder & Brewery Jim Koch on 2015 Utopias:
“Sam Adams Utopias is the lunatic fringe of extreme beer. The recipe stretches the limits of the brewing process, flavor complexity, and as a by-product, alcohol content. While barrel aging is now a mainstay of a thriving craft beer community, we have been experimenting with barrel aging for nearly 25 years and this year’s batch is made from a library of barrels, some of which go as far back as 1992. This is an other-worldly beer that’s just as radical today as it was in 1992 and I am excited for drinkers to sip and savor it.”

Utopias-seasoned cigars, perfect for craft beer and cigar lovers alike:
Samuel Adams is teaming up with Ted’s Cigars to release limited-edition Utopias-seasoned cigars, flavored with the 2015 batch of Utopias. Ted’s Cigars uses their proprietary process of aromatic seasoning to create a cigar unlike any other. The Utopias-infused cigar features a distinct subtle sweetness, and notes of maple and vanilla from the brew, as well as a spicy complexity from the tobacco blend. This extreme beer brings out a creamy, spicy sweetness from the cigar and enhances the subtle leather and smoky character in the cigar’s finish. Hand-rolled in the Dominican Republic, the cigars make an unexpected stocking-stuffer and will be available on TedsCigars.com through the end of December. Pair the cigars with Samuel Adams Utopias for the ultimate holiday treat.

Where to find Utopias:
The first batch of Utopias bottles can be found in the hands of Samuel Adams employees. Since Utopias was first released, each bottle number corresponds with when each employee was hired, making Founder and Brewer Jim Koch number 1 and Brewer Dean Gianocostas number 2. For all other beer lovers, fewer than approximately 10,000 bottles of Samuel Adams Utopias can be found at select specialty beer and liquor stores for a suggested retail price of $199 per bottle. Price varies by market.

ABOUT THE BOSTON BEER COMPANY:
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. Inspired and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking about beer, Jim brought the recipe to life in his kitchen. Pleased with the results of his work, Jim decided to sample his beer with bars in Boston in the hopes that drinkers would appreciate the complex, full-flavored beer he brewed fresh in America. That beer was aptly named Samuel Adams Boston Lager, in recognition of one of our nation's great founding fathers, a man of independent mind and spirit. Little did Jim know at the time, Samuel Adams Boston Lager would soon become a catalyst of the American craft beer revolution.

Today, The Boston Beer Company brews more than 60 styles of beer. It relentlessly pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of classic beers by searching the world for the finest ingredients. Using the traditional four vessel brewing process, the Company often takes extra steps like dry-hopping, barrel-aging and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. The Company has also pioneered another revolution, the 'extreme beer' movement, where it seeks to challenge drinker's perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company has been committed to elevating the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions around the globe, and is one of world’s most awarded breweries at international beer competitions. As an independent company, brewing quality beer remains its primary focus. Although Samuel Adams beer is America's leading craft beer, it accounts for only one percent of the U.S. beer market. The Boston Beer Company will continue its independently-minded quest to brew great beer and to advocate for the growth of craft beer across America. Stone Brewing Co. Releases Sorry Not Sorry IPA a Collaboration With 4 Hands Brewing and Bale Breaker Brewing

Courtesy of Stone Brewing Co
ESCONDIDO, CA (November 9, 2015) – Stone Brewing Co. is sorry for providing yet another IPA…but not really. The craft beer company is only guilty of one thing: Being an unapologetic band of hopheads eternally psyched to continue exploring the ever-expanding possibilities of India pale ales. For its latest collaborative beer, Stone teamed up with 4 Hands Brewing Co. and Bale Breaker Brewing Company—two rising stars of American craft brewing—to create 4 Hands / Bale Breaker / Stone Sorry Not Sorry IPA. This imperial IPA brewed with experimental hops and peaches will start arriving today in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at retailers, restaurants and bars where Stone beer is sold.

The concept of this IPA started forming after Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele was encouraged by Team Stone members to visit and sample beers from 4 Hands. Steele was impressed with their lineup, and the St. Louis-based beer company was added to Stone’s “awesome breweries to collaborate with” list. During last year’s hop selection in Yakima, WA, Stone Lead Brewer Jeremy Moynier and Steele stopped by Bale Breaker, a craft brewery that had recently opened on the storied B.T. Loftus Ranches hop farm. While enjoying a few heavily hopped IPAs, Moynier and Steele knew this would be the perfect addition to the admittedly hop-obsessed trio.

“The family operating B.T. Loftus Ranches and Bale Breaker has been growing hops since 1932, so there’s no doubt they are hop fanatics like us here at Stone,” explains Steele. “Plus, 4 Hands Brewing Co. has made some amazing beers that use unconventional brewing ingredients to accentuate the qualities of hops. This beer truly reflects the skills of three brilliant IPA brewers.”

When brainstorming recipe ideas, it was decided that Simcoe and Mosaic hops were a must, especially since B.T. Loftus Ranches was the first hop farm to commercially grow the beloved Simcoe varietal. But the goal of Stone Collaborations is about exploring uncharted territory. Thus, the trio decided that puréed peaches should be added to up the fruit factor, while experimental hops HBC 342 and HBC 344 were selected to provide notes of pine, berries, citrus and stone fruit. Thanks to Munich malt used for the grain bill, the beer has a golden, light-brown appearance and a slightly sweet finish, which perfectly balances the smooth hop bitterness.

To experience these newly cultivated hops and in all their glory, fans should enjoy 4 Hands / Bale Breaker / Stone Sorry Not Sorry IPA fresh and within 90 days after “bottled on” date on the bottle neck. This beer is a magnificent example of what happens when talented brewers band together to explore new hoppy territory for the IPA. After all, who says the world needs another IPA? We do!

Tasting Notes
provided by Brewmaster Mitch Steele
Appearance: Pours a golden, light-brown color.
Aroma: As expected, hops dominate the aroma with lots of pine, resin and stone fruit (peach/apricot) qualities. Hints of peach nectar are also apparent as the beer warms and opens up.
Taste: Fruity and hoppy, the hops provide a blend of stone fruit, piney-hop resin and hints of dankness, tropical fruit and citrus. There are prevalent peach fruit flavors that really complement the hops, especially as the beer warms up. The Munich malt provides some nice color and balance to the hop bitterness, and the beer finishes slightly sweet with a very smooth bitterness.
Palate: Rounded but bitter with some light sweetness
Overall: Two of our favorite new breweries joined us for this fun collaboration. 4 Hands Brewing Co. of St. Louis and Bale Breaker Brewing Company of Moxee, Washington, are good friends and great brewers, and they certainly love their hops. So when we first started talking about brewing, the idea of brewing a double IPA was the only option that was really ever on the table. The team at Bale Breaker helped us secure an experimental hop, currently named HBC 344, for use in this beer. To that we added another experimental hop that we had here at Stone, HBC 342. And then we added some Simcoe and Mosaic for good measure. We talked at length about adding some fruit to the beer that could complement the hop character, and the team at 4 Hands suggested peaches, which sure enough combines with the stone fruit character of the hops wonderfully.

Samuel Adams Rebel Grapefruit IPA is the newest addition to the Rebel family of IPAs

Courtesy Boston Beer Co
Samuel Adams Rebel Grapefruit IPA is the newest addition to the Rebel family of IPAs, which are brewed to showcase a wide range of hop intensities and characteristics. Rebel Grapefruit is brewed with real grapefruit for a big punch of citrus that amplifies the tropical fruit and citrus notes of one of the Sam Adams brewers’ favorite West Coast hops, Mosaic.

Rebel Grapefruit IPA’s grapefruit flavor and aroma comes from grapefruit juice and peel, as well as hops that showcase similar flavors. Grapefruit peel is added in the kettle to impart a tart, sharp character, while grapefruit juice is added right before the beer is filtered to provide a big, grapefruit juiciness. The juice rounds out the touch of bitterness from the peel and the four West Coast hop varieties to bring a refreshing finish to this bold, bright, thirst-quenching IPA.

The combination of grapefruit juice and peel delivers a distinct bright, juicy tartness that brings out complementary notes in a variety of hops carefully selected by the brewers at Sam Adams for their flavor and aroma. The brewers focused on showcasing Mosaic hops, with their great tropical fruit, citrus and berry notes.  They are relatively new to the brewing scene and when they were released in 2012 as HBC369, the Sam Adams brewers fell in love with their flavor profile and first experimented with them in Latitude 48 IPA.

While the brew features Mosaic hops, they are also complemented by a variety of hops used throughout the brewing process for additional hop flavor and aroma:

-   Mosaic (kettle & dry-hopping): Sweeter fruit notes of Mandarin orange, pineapple, and grapefruit,  with hints of eucalyptus

·   Centennial (dry-hopping): Medium citrus, intensely floral with hints of wood

·   Cascade (kettle): Citrus and grapefruit with subtle floral balance

-   Citra (kettle): Strong citrus, tropical fruit, and slightly floral

·        Pairing with Food: The tart and refreshing character of the grapefruit is perfect for balancing soft, buttery flavors like avocado, cheese, or desserts like orange pound cake to cut through their rich creaminess without overpowering them. The bitterness and bold character stand up to richer, spicier foods like dry-rub pork or strong cheeses.

Ghostfish Brewing & Ground Breaker Brewing Team Up To Offer 3 Award-Winning Beers for Their Taproom Patrons

(Seattle, WA/Portland, OR) The U.S. is filled with lots of great craft beer cities with many new markets emerging each year. The Northwest is home to arguably two of the most prestigious craft beer cities this country has to offer, so it should come as no surprise that the two best dedicated gluten-free breweries call the Northwest home.

Ghostfish Brewing is a dedicated gluten-free brewery in Seattle, WA and Ground Breaker Brewing is a dedicated gluten-free brewery in Portland, OR. These two breweries swept the awards in the Gluten Free Beer category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival®. The gold medal went to Ghostfish Brewing’s Watchstander Stout, the silver medal went to Ground Breaker’s IPA No. 5, and bronze went to Ghostfish Brewing’s Grapefruit IPA.

To commemorate their award winning beers, both breweries will be tapping the three medal- winning beers in their own taprooms during the week of November 9, 2015. “It was very exciting for us to win another medal this year,” stated James Neumeister, head of Research & Development at Ground Breaker Brewing. “We saw a unique opportunity with two Pacific Northwest breweries taking home the gluten-free GABF medals this year, we approached the guys at Ghostfish with the idea of a ‘champions flight’ and they were receptive,” Neumeister added. “We are extremely proud to be part of the great brewing culture that exists in the Northwest,” says Brian Thiel, co-founder and director of sales for Ghostfish Brewing. “This opportunity, to showcase these three great beers born in the Northwest, was too good to pass up.”

Unlike breweries that produce so-called “gluten-reduced” beers, Ghostfish Brewing and Ground Breaker Brewing are in complete alignment in the adherence of using 100% gluten-free ingredients in dedicated facilities to create their beers. “There are no ‘omitted’ risks for Celiacs drinking our beer; we are 100% committed to 0 PPM, start to finish” says Jason Yerger, brewmaster at Ghostfish Brewing. “We strive to bring the craft beer experience to the gluten- free community. Serving these three top-rated beers in our dedicated pub is in the spirit of that very mission,” remarked Neumeister.

2015 Alaskan Smoked Porter Releases this Week

Courtesy of Alaskan Brewing CO
Limited Vintage Releases with 21 GABF Medals to its Name

Juneau, Alaska (November 4, 2015)- The limited edition 2015 vintage of Alaskan Brewing Co.'s Alaskan Smoked Porter officially releases this week on draft and in 22 oz bottles throughout the 17 states where Alaskan beer is sold.

"As far as we know, Alaskan Smoked Porter has no real end to its shelf life. We are still enjoying vintages from our cellar that date back to 1993, when we started leaving some yeast in the bottle for better aging," explains Alaskan Brewing cofounder Geoff Larson.

The first release of this now vintage-dated beer was called "Alaskan Seasonal" in the late 1980s - a hearty winter seasonal brewed as a nod to the malting and brewing practices of the turn-of-the-century brewers in Alaska who had to malt their own barley using local alder wood for direct-fired heat. While the name officially changed to Alaskan Smoked Porter a couple of years later, the Alaskan Brew Crew still employs the same smokehouse used for the first batch those many years ago.

"Alder adds a traditional smoke character to our Porter that is true to the Alaskan landscape. Due to natural flavor changes in the wood and malt each year, no two vintages will taste the same when brewed, and they will not age in exactly the same way," says Alaskan Brewing Plant Manager Curtis Holmes, "That's what makes each year's release so exciting for us."
