Rogue Farms Hop Harvest Begins

Courtesy of Rogue Brewing
Independence, Oregon – At the break of dawn last week, tractors rolled into the Rogue Farms hopyard to begin their 8th harvest. Over the next four weeks, our 8 varieties of our proprietary hops will be picked, stripped, sorted, kilned, cooled and baled before being driven 77 miles to the Rogue brewery in Newport, Oregon.

This year, the global production of hops is set to rise 21%, the highest in seven years. Hop acreage in the Northwest alone is up 17%, a record high. At Rogue Farms we planted an additional 10 acres this year, bringing our total hop acreage to 52. This accounts for .039059422% of global hop acreage.

“The hop market has changed a lot since we became farmers in 2008,” said Brett Joyce, President of Rogue Ales. “The ingredients we grow at Rogue Farms are by far the most expensive ingredients we use, but we’re able to guarantee our supply and quality as the demand for hops, especially the aroma varieties like we grow at Rogue Farms, explodes across the country."

No Pumpkin Here: Alaskan Brings Coffee Brown Ale to Fall Lineup

Heritage Coffee Brown Ale uses radical technique for rich flavor

JUNEAU, Alaska (Aug. 22, 2016) – Alaskan Brewing Company this fall is nixing the pumpkin beers in favor of a rich coffee ale created by teaming up with Juneau-based Heritage Coffee Roasting Company. First released on a limited basis last year to rave reviews, Alaskan Heritage Coffee Brown Ale uses an unusual technique and the highest quality ingredients to bring out the best coffee flavor and aroma, and will be available as the autumn seasonal in all states where Alaskan Brewing is distributed.

“We were looking to brew a coffee beer that wasn’t overly-dominated by dark malts,” said Alaskan Brewer Tyler Lindquist. “That’s why we went with a Brown Ale for this beer. The subtleness of the Brown Ale then allowed us to accentuate the richness of a great coffee, instead of the bitter acrid flavor that sometimes comes through in coffee beers”

That subtle flavor allowed for a radical technique that required close collaboration between the brewers at Alaskan and the roasters at Heritage.

Courtesy of Alaskan Brewing Co
“They wanted to have a deep coffee backbone to this beer, so we all came up with the idea of roasting some of the malt in our coffee roaster with some of the beans used in the beer,” said Heritage Coffee Roaster Mike Dunlevy. “That’s pretty tricky, because the flashpoint of malt is much lower than that for coffee beans, so the potential of fire was very real.”

Heritage Roasters worked with Alaskan Brewers to sample coffees in order to find a blend that would bring out chocolate, caramel and honey in the final beer. They decided on a Brazilian variety called Paixao, which they cold-brewed to reduce bitterness. This cold-brewed coffee was added at multiple stages throughout the brewing process of the beer, in order to infuse it with a deep and rich coffee flavor and aroma.

Alaskan has released pumpkin beers for the past few years during the fall season, but this year, among a seeming flood of pumpkin beers available on the market, Alaskan’s brewers wanted to break away from convention and offer an alternative to their loyal fans.

First sampled at last year’s Great American Beer Festival, Alaskan Heritage Coffee Brown Ale garnered rave reviews, with at least one reference to it being part of a “next level” of coffee beers. The beer will be out in September and will be available until mid-November.

Cascade Kriek 2014, ranks it as the top sour beer in America

PORTLAND, Ore. – The New York Times has ranked Cascade Brewing’s 2014 Kriek project as the number one sour beer in America.

In an article that appeared in the August 18, 2016 edition, the paper announced the results of a recent blind tasting panel of 20 American sour beers. Cascade Kriek was the only beer to receive four stars, an accomplishment the paper noted as “rarely achieved.” The panel described the beer as “Bright, lively, tart and distinctive, with beautifully balanced flavors of sour cherries and citrus.”

The panel gave high praise to Cascade overall, noting it as a brewery that has mastered consistency with its sour beers. This marked the second time the panel has singled out Cascade; its 2010 Kriek also earned four stars in a 2011 tasting.

Courtesy of Cascade Brewing Co
“We are extremely grateful for this honor and to have lightning strike twice,” stated Cascade brewmaster Ron Gansberg. “This is a testament to our people, our brewing philosophy and our process, in which our staff takes great pride in making the best sour beers possible. To be held in such high regard by this esteemed panel is an honor and exemplifies the hard work and dedication put forth by the brewers and cellar staff at Cascade Brewing.”

Added Tim Larrance, vice president sales and marketing, “To receive this kind of reception and accolade by someone of Mr. Asimov’s stature, as well as his esteemed colleagues, is truly amazing. We have always felt that our beers were something special but to have it confirmed by the New York Times panel is a great endorsement and validation that we are doing something right.”

Noting that sour beers have become “a total sensation and craze,” the panel tasted 20 beers from the United States with the beer names concealed; the beers represented a selection generally available in good retail shops, restaurants and on the internet. The panel consisted of Eric Asimov, New York Times wine critic; Matthew Pene, maître d’hôtel and beer director at Eleven Madison Park restaurant; Chase Rabenn, hospitality manager at a forthcoming restaurant for the residents of 432 Park Avenue; and Florence Fabricant, New York Times food critic.

Cascade Kriek 2014 is a blend of red ales aged in oak wine barrels with cherries for up to 14 months. Intense flavors of both sour pie and Bing cherries are supported by the rich red ale base beer with a touch of oak and hints of wood spices.

Since news broke of the ranking, bottles of 2014 Kriek have been swiftly selling at Cascade Brewing’s two retail locations, the Barrel House and the Raccoon Lodge and Brew Pub. Another four-dozen bottles will be made available for sale in-house this week, retailing for $24 apiece.

Cascade Brewing is distributed in 40 states as well as Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, UK and several countries in Europe. “The brewery already has a great network of wholesaler partners as well as retailers and consumers that continue to spread the good word about our brands,” explained Larrance. “We now look forward to bringing even more people into the world of Cascade Brewing sour beers.”

About Cascade Brewing
Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. Its award-winning sour ales feature a clean, lactic acid profile produced by a house culture of lactobacillus bacteria. Prost! Left Hand Brewing’s Oktoberfest Returns!

Left Hand’s beloved Märzen Lager is back for the fall season!

LONGMONT, CO • August 23, 2016 – Time to raise your stein and celebrate the change of the season! As the summer days come to an end, Left Hand Brewing Co. releases Oktoberfest Märzen Lager for the late summer through early fall.

Standing out from the pumpkin beer crowd, Left Hand opts for fall tradition with Oktoberfest. But brewing a true to style Märzen Lager is no easy feat. Left Hand begins brewing in the late spring as it takes a full two months for the beer to reach lagered perfection. Moreover, the brewers perform a traditional yet time intensive decoction mash process, a multi-step mash. The laborious method is the key to Oktoberfest’s color and complex flavor. With over 15 years of brewing their Märzen Lager under their belt, Left Hand’s Oktoberfest stands out as an enduring commitment to the style.
Courtesy of Left Hand Brewing Co
Pouring a brilliant copper in color, Oktoberfest entices the imbiber with notes of warm biscuit reminiscent of home and fall tradition. The beer begins with the toasty sweetness of the malt up front while the noble pedigree hops allow for a dry crisp finish at 6.6% ABV. Giving tribute to its German roots, the style’s heritage is referenced in the label art - showcasing the Bavarian lion and blue & white checkered flag.

Left Hand will officially release Oktoberfest for the 2016 season, on Friday, August 26th in their Tasting Room. The fall seasonal will be available across Left Hand’s 37-state distribution for a limited time. Coming Soon: Longmont Oktoberfest returns September 23rd & 24th! Ranked as a “Must Visit Oktoberfest” by DRAFT Magazine, the annual event hosted by Left Hand brings together ten Longmont breweries with local food, the arts, German tradition, and live music featuring The Wailers!

1 Brewmaster: 20,000 Brews By The Sea

Courtsey of Rogue Brewing

Rogue World Headquarters, Newport, OR (August 18, 2016) Today Rogue Ales Brewmaster John "More Hops" Maier is brewing his 20,000th batch of Rogue beer: "20,000 Brews by the Sea". In May of 1989, John arrived in the small coastal town of Newport just in time to create brew #1. 27 years and 20,000 brews later, John still rides his bike daily over the Yaquina Bay Bridge to the brewery where he continues to create innovative brews that have garnered international acclaim.

In classic John Maier fashion, 20,000 Brews by the Sea is not brewed to style but instead is described by John as a "complexity bomb" that honors this remarkable achievement. The beer uses 20 varieties of hops, 20 specialty malts, has a 20 year shelf life, will be brewed to 20 degrees plato, and will be bottle conditioned for 20 days.

"20,000 brews by one Brewmaster is an unprecedented achievement in the craft beer world and all of us in the Rogue family are amazed by John's dedication, passion, work ethic, skill, creativity, and all around awesomeness," said Rogue President Brett Joyce.

Courtesy of Rogue Brewing
"This is a monumental brew in my career and I'm going to have a blast making it," prosted John this morning before he began to make 20,000 Brews by the Sea.

John graduated in 1986 from the Siebel Institute, was named National Homebrewer of the Year in 1988 for his Old Crustacean Barleywine recipe, received the Brewers' Association inaugural Russell Scherer Award in 1997, and worked at Alaskan Brewery where he created their renowned Smoked Porter. When John isn't brewing he's likely to be listening to Jazz, riding one of his seven bicycles, walking his Curly Coated Retrievers, or traveling the world with his wife Stacey.

20,000 Brews by the Sea will be available beginning on October 20th in limited quantities at Rogue Meeting Halls.

Firestone Walker’s “Oaktoberfest” Reborn This Month in New 16-Ounce Can Format

Courtesy of Firestone Walker Brewing Co
Paso Robles, CA: After a one-year hiatus, Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s seasonal Oaktoberfest makes its packaged return this month in a dashing new 16-ounce can format.

“We brewed a single batch of Oaktoberfest for select draft accounts last year, but that was it,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It’s cool to have this beer back in the package, particularly in this new four-pack. You might be tempted to retire your stein and quaff it straight from the can.”

Oaktoberfest is a “Paso Märzen Bier” made to honor the classic Märzen style while exhibiting just a hint of extra West Coast hoppiness. All of the ingredients are sourced from Germany, including Vienna and Pilsner malts as well as Hallertau Tradition hops.

“Malty sweetness and subtle honey-like aromas take the lead on this beer, but there’s also a subtext of noble hop spiciness,” Brynildson said. “It’s mellow and rounded, and has a beautiful autumn orange hue.”

Courtesy of Firestone Walker Brewing Co
Oaktoberfest is a seasonal offering for late summer and fall, and will be available in all Firestone Walker markets starting in mid August. While Oaktoberfest has long been a fall staple at the brewery, this latest release marks only the second time it has been packaged.

The name Oaktoberfest is a nod to the brewery’s hometown of Paso Robles—Spanish for “Pass of The Oaks”—as well as the longtime presence of oak barrels as a central part of the Firestone Walker brewing operation. The checkered blue and white pattern on the label echoes the Bavarian flag and pays homage to the Oktoberfest style.

Also on the homefront, the third annual 2016 Madonna Inn Oktoberfest presented by Firestone Walker Brewing Company takes place on October 1 in San Luis Obispo. As always, Oaktoberfest will be racked to oak barrels and ceremonially tapped to punctuate the festivities.

Pumpkick Spiced Seasonal Ale
Pumpkick is back bringing a bite of tartness to New Belgium’s traditionally spiced pumpkin ale. The tart cranberry kick offers a bright burst of seasonal flavor. Pumpkick pours a slightly hazy, glowing orange, packed with pumpkin juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and a snappy dose of cranberry. The mouthfeel is creamy from added oats, followed by a quick, dry finish, making Pumpkick the perfect beer to kick off fall.

ABV: 6.0%
IBU: 18
Yeast: Ale yeast
Hops: Nugget
Malts: Pale, Munich, Caramel

Le Terroir Dry-Hopped Sour Ale
Le Terroir, named after the French term meaning “of the earth,” packs the bold and hoppy nose of an American IPA, plus the pucker of a well-crafted sour. Felix, New Belgium’s wood-aged pale sour beer, is dry hopped with Amarillo and Galaxy hops to create Le Terroir. The mango and peach tones of the hops playfully complement the wood-aged backbone without any bitterness, creating a beer that changes every time New Belgium brews it.

ABV: 7.5%
IBU: 12
Yeast: Lager yeast
Hops: Nugget
Malts: Pale, Wheat, C-80, Carapils, Oats
Special Processing: Dry Hopped with Amarillo and a little Galaxy in stainless tanks in wood cellar

Bretta IPA
Bretta IPA, part of New Belgium’s Hop Kitchen series, which showcases New Belgium’s hop heavy beers, is out now. This beer crosses wickedly wild Brettanomyces yeast with some of New Belgium’s favorite fruity hop varieties. Bretta is conditioned on two strains of Brettanomyces for a month, giving it citrusy, piney hop notes thanks to Equinox, Galaxy, and Warrior. It has a bite that lingers, but a sweetness that emerges with a touch of pineapple.

ABV: 7.5%
IBU: 75
Yeast: Ale yeast, Brettanomyces Clausenii, Brettanomyces Bruxellensis
Hops: Cascade, Equinox, Galaxy, Warrior
Malts: Pale, Caramel 120, Spelt

Fruit Fly Passionfruit Citra Sour
Fruit Fly is a fruity, refreshingly tart, and juicy summer release, putting a new spin on the classic tartness of Berliner weisse. New Belgium acidifies this stainless steel sour beer with its house lacto strain, then dry-hops it with fruity Citra. During fermentation 800 pounds of tropical passion fruit is blended in. Fruit Fly has big citrus flavors and rich guava-like aromas, with a finish that is tart and dry; an ideal summer beer.

“At New Belgium, fruited beers are very much a part of our DNA,” said Andrew Emerton, New Belgium specialty brand manager. “We’ve been using real fruit since the very beginning with a beer called Old Cherry and since 1991 we’ve sent to market 34 beers brewed with fruit. Last year, our Pilot Brewers were challenged with creating a few stainless steel sour recipes featuring our proprietary lacto blending process and beautifully tart house lacto strain. While all recipes were great we felt the Passionfruit Citra Sour just killed it.”

ABV: 5.7%
Hops: Citra
Special Processing: Additions of passion fruit and dry-hopped with Citra hops.
Availability: Now on draft
