Sierra Nevada’s Brewmaster Steve Dresler Announces Retirement

Chico, CA—July 8, 2016— Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s Brewmaster, Steve Dresler, has announced that he plans to retire next year.  Dresler has been in charge of Sierra Nevada’s brewing program since the early 1980s, after joining Sierra Nevada in 1983.

Under Dresler’s direction, Sierra Nevada won eight World Beer Cup awards and 31 GABF medals.  He has overseen the development and production of almost all of their new beers for more than 30 years.  Last year, the Brewers Association awarded him the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing, an honor selected by a committee made up of members of the BA’s advisory board.  Sierra Nevada is the first and only two-time winner of this award.

Of Dresler’s retirement, Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman said, “It’s bittersweet.  Steve is an iconic figure in our brewery and in the industry.  His talent and personality are legendary, and he has set the tone in our production department for years.  I wish him all the best in this much-deserved retirement.”

Although Dresler will work into 2017, Sierra Nevada will post the Chico head brewer position immediately in order to allow time for an extensive search, as well as for Dresler to help train the selected candidate.

Other notable takeaways from this year’s CBC include:

·CBC Symposium Ales: The BA collaborated with the Oregon Brewers Guild on this year's commemorative beer. With Oregon home to so many craft breweries, the guild opted to brew six different commemorative beers representing the coast, central Oregon, the Willamette Valley, and Portland proper (with three from the latter). Each beer was a collaboration among breweries from the given area, while a variety of industry suppliers provided the ingredients and packaging.

·Craft Brewers Reach Record Volume Share of Marketplace: CBC also saw the BA release a full, extensive analysis of 2014 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. For the first time ever, craft brewers reached double-digit (11 percent) volume share of the marketplace. The state of the industry presentation is available in the CBC Media Kit. The full 2014 industry analysis will be published in the May/June 2015 issue of The New Brewer.

The 2016 CBC will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from May 3-6, in conjunction with the 2016 World Beer Cup®.
