Deschutes Brewery Announces 30th Release of Jubelale

Courtesy of Deschutes Brewing Co
Bend, Oregon – 3 October 2017 – A work of art in more ways than one, Deschutes Brewery’s winter seasonal, Jubelale, will hit store shelves and tap handles next month to welcome the changing season. To celebrate the 30th bottling, for the first time ever, this year’s packaging will feature not one, but a series of custom snowflake themed illustrations by Bend, Oregon artist MaryLea Harris

“I was so honored to be invited to create the label for the 30th anniversary of this beloved beer, and to join the ranks of artists I esteem and admire,” said Harris. “I like to work in series, and landed on creating four snowflake paintings for this project because no two snowflakes are alike just like no two beers are ever exactly alike. It’s exciting to be the first artist to create more than one piece of art for the label and have a mixed and matched set of bottles in each six-pack this year.”

Harris, who specializes in mixed-media and painting, used a complex process to create the Deschutes Snowflake series. She started by layering plaster and acrylic paint applied to a primed canvas with recycled plastic gift cards as scraping tools. As a nod to the history of the brewery and the beer, she tore up Jubelale posters from the past three years along with some local articles about Deschutes Brewery and glued them to the painted background. She then continued to build up layers of paint with brush strokes and liquid acrylic ink drips to achieve the colorful surface. The last step was to paint each snowflake by hand so, as she explains, “so each are unique and full of complexity and detail.”

This complexity adorning the bottle’s exterior is mirrored inside the bottle as Jubelale is unique to many of Deschutes Brewery’s other beers in its malty and dried fruit character, along with the use of EKG hops which have a light herbal and spice quality. Jubelale will be available in six-packs and on draft everywhere Deschutes Brewery beer is sold, starting in October.

A special launch event will be held at the Deschutes Brewery and Public House in downtown Bend on Monday, October 16th, where Harris will be on hand to meet with fans and sign posters. Harris is also our featured artist of the month in October and will attend First Friday at the Pub on October 6th as well.

About Deschutes Brewery
Family and employee owned since 1988, Deschutes Brewery – Bend’s original brewpub – has become the cornerstone of Central Oregon’s flourishing craft brew culture. Now available in 29 states and Washington D.C., Deschutes’ flagship brewpub has been joined by a main brewing facility overlooking the Deschutes River in Bend, a pub in Portland and a tasting room in Roanoke, Virginia where it will build a new east coast brewery. www.deschutesbrewery.com

WORTHY BREWING’S ADDING TANKS TO INCREASE BREWING CAPACITY

WORTHY BREWING’S ADDING TANKS TO INCREASE  BREWING CAPACITY

BEND, OR – In response to an increase in demand for it’s diversified portfolio of balanced beers, Worthy Brewing has expanded it’s beer production capacity by adding three new 240 barrel fermenters and a 120 barrel brite tank. The upgrades will allow Worthy to produce 40,000 barrels annually.

In 2016, Worthy Brewing produced 15,000 barrels. Currently, Worthy is on track to brew 19,000 barrels in 2017. In addition to the four tanks, Worthy has also doubled it’s glycol capacity, beefed up it’s original 3 ton CO2 tank to 53 tons, and retrofitted it’s four vessel, 30 barrel brew system to allow one vessel to serve double duty as a wort receiver.

Finally, Worthy is in the process of adding another 70,000-pound grain silo. These upgrades are expected in increase daily production by 25%.

“With the increased capacity, we’re investing in packaging infrastructure to allow for longer production runs and a larger variety of package options, including our new Worthy IPA 24 pack which will be available in Costco this May,” said Senior Director of Sales Casey O’Brien.

With the production expansion taking place, Worthy Brewing has also hired their first full-time Quality Manager, Victoria Chaplin. Chaplin has worked at several of Oregon’s renowned breweries including Bridgeport Brewing, Craft Brew Alliance and Full Sail Brewing. She attended Oregon State University for Food Science Technology, and holds certifications in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), packaging from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling and beer sensory from AROXA.

“Victoria brings a wealth of experience and a creative spirit. We’ve always been committed to quality, but with Victoria we’ll now have the expertise and tools we need to insure that our packaged beers have a long and fresh shelf-life,” said Brewmaster, Dustin Kellner. “She’ll also be helping us with sensory analysis as we continue to evaluate experimental hops from the OSU-Indie Hops breeding program. With the success of Strata, we’re excited to participate in the quest to pioneer new flavors.”

Worthy Brewing Company opened its doors in early 2013, delivering remarkably balanced, filtered ales that are hand-crafted using premium ingredients and the pristine water from the Cascade Mountains in Bend, Oregon. Worthy’s campus includes a large outdoor biergarten, full restaurant, and a greenhouse and hop yard onsite for growing estate and experimental hops in conjunction with Oregon State University and Indie Hops. An expansion will be completed in Spring 2017, featuring the “Hopservatory,” with a large telescope, “The Hop Mahal,” a banquet space, “The Beermuda Triangle” expanded indoor seating, and “The Star Bar,” an open air mezzanine bar.

Worthy Brewing Adds Stoker Red Ale To Their Line-Up Of Canned Craft Beers

Courtesy of Worthy Brewing Co

BEND, OR -- Worthy Brewing is adding a fifth can to their line-up this spring. Introducing Stoker Red Ale, a hoppy beer designed to stoke your passions and keep them lit. Stoker Red will be available in 12-ounce cans this April.

Several months ago, Worthy made the hard decision to discontinue their Eruption Imperial Red. Brewmaster Dustin Kellner took this opportunity to create a more sessionable, judiciously juiced red inspired by its retired cousin.

For bittering, Worthy’s Brewers added Nugget and CTZ. For aroma and flavor, they added Oregon grown Cascade and Centennial Hops and topped it off with Mandarina Bavaria, a German hop whose mother is Cascade. The final numbers come in at 6.6% ABV and 66 IBU.

“What we wanted to brew was an easy drinking, hop forward red ale. Something that would be as refreshing from a can, as it would be from a glass. It’s always tough to be objective when drinking your own beer, but I think we nailed the style with Stoker,” said Kellner.

“Stoker is fuel for your firebox,” said Roger Worthington, Worthy Brewing’s Founder.  “It has a tantalizing tangerine aroma and a piney, lemonish flavor with a satisfying malt sweetness. It’s the perfect beer for star gazing around the campfire or holding court with friends and foes alike on the pressing issues of the day.”

The can features a swarthy brewer in his rubber boots stoking the kettle with a shovel piled high with big juicy hop cones.

Kegs and cans are distributed by Columbia Distribution in Oregon and Washington, Hodgen Distributing in Eastern Oregon, and by Hayden Beverage in Idaho.

2017 Bend Brewfest Sets Dates, Accepts Brewery Participant Applications

Courtesy of Bend Brewfest

Annual Bend, Oregon beer festival scheduled for August 10-12; applications for brewery participation open through the end of the month
Bend, Oregon -10 February 2017 – Get ready to raise a pint to toast all things craft beer for the 15th annual Bend Brewfest, scheduled for August 10-12, 2017 at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon’s Old Mill District. Traditionally held on the third weekend in August, this year’s event was moved up to accommodate the highly anticipated solar eclipse which will pass over Central Oregon.

Once again, breweries from around the region will apply to share their creations with nearly 40,000 patrons. Brewery applications are available on the Bend Brewfest website and are due by February 28, 2017.

“There is a huge amount of interest each year from breweries all around the region,” said Marney Smith, director of the festival. “With only 75 spots available, we always have a wait list. We will be announcing the final brewery lineup in late March.”

Last year’s event served up 190 craft beverages to 38,000+ visitors, raising more than $18,000 for charity. The money was divided equally among three local nonprofit organizations to help them achieve their respective missions:

  • Deschutes River Conservancy – to restore streamflow and improve water quality in the Deschutes Basin.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon – to provide mentoring programs for area youth.
  • Neighbor Impact – to help families access skills for success, family services, financial assistance, food, housing, heat and energy assistance.

Smith continued, “For us, one of the most important parts of this event is giving back. Each year, we are able to support our beneficiaries in a significant way and we want to thank everyone who came out, bought beer and helped raise money for our community. Let’s do it again in 2017!”

Each year festival visitors can taste both incredibly rare and popular beers from nano-breweries to some of the most highly recognized craft breweries in the region, in addition to hand-crafted ciders and wine. The X-Taps showcase low-production, specialty beers not available in stores or restaurants.
