Redhook to host IPA Daze featuring Washington's best breweries

Courtesy of Redhook Brewing Co

Join Redhook for a magical three-day IPA bonanza from April 20 to 22

SEATTLE, WASH. – April 2, 2018 – Redhook Brewlab is throwing a three-day party to celebrate craft beer’s top style, the India Pale Ale, as it hosts IPA Daze from April 20 to April 22. The event will feature a total of 32 IPAs: 16 from Redhook, and 16 from a who’s who of Evergreen State brewers. Everyone will be bringing their “A” game – with a variety of takes on the IPA, from traditional and imperial IPAs to fruit IPAs and hazies. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Surfrider Foundation, Seattle Chapter.

“We love our IPAs at Brewlab, from Bicoastal to Big Ballard to our new seasonal Peaches for Me IPA,” said Redhook Brewlab Brewmaster Nick Crandall. “When we first opened Brewlab last summer, we did collaborations with some of Washington’s best breweries, so we wanted to come full circle and throw a one-of-a-kind IPA fest and invite all our friends back.”

IPA Daze will run April 20 - 22, on Friday from 3 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

So where do the baby goats come in? Redhook wanted to give guests a special 4/20 treat, so Brewlab will have small petting zoo outside Brewlab from 5 to 7 p.m. on the opening day of the festival. And KEXP DJs will be on hand all three days to keep the music fresh.

Over the three-day IPA Daze extravaganza, fest-goers will also have access to some of Washington’s best breweries, as guest IPAs will be made by: Elysian, Georgetown, Holy Mountain, Fremont, Black Raven, Crucible, Matchless, Chainline, Stoup, Aslan, Reuben’s, Wander, Hellbent, 20 Corners, and Silver City.

Additionally guests will find 16 different takes on the style from Crandall and his team at Brewlab. From imperial IPAs to a Cascadian Dark Ale and a Belgian IPA, Crandall’s inventive beers for IPA Daze run the gamut.

“We didn’t just want to have 16 more traditional IPAs from Brewlab for the weekend-long event,” said Crandall. “We wanted to push ourselves as the host to come up with various styles of IPAs, and we’re pumped with the result.”

Among the Redhook beers that will be pouring for the three-day event: Peaches for Me, Bicoastal, Big Ballard, Tangelic Halo, a Rye IPA, a Belgian IPA and a Cascadian Dark Ale, and collaborations with Matchless, Georgetown, and 20 Corners.

Did we mention that this glorious event is free? Yes, entry to the event is free; however tokens will be required for beer purchases. Tokens are $1.50 each; four tokens for $6 dollars; nine tokens for $12, or 20 tokens for $25. One token equals one taster; four tokens equal one pint; six tokens will get you a taster tray.
Brewlab will also have a limited food menu for the event, including pizza by the slice and special 4/20-themed fare.

In honor of the weekend’s Earth Day celebration, Redhook will donate a portion of its proceeds from the three-day fest to their friends at the Surfrider Foundation.

“While this event is about celebrating the IPA and showcasing Washington’s best breweries, we wanted to have an environmental charity tie, too, and linking with Surfrider was a natural choice,” said Crandall.

About Redhook Brewery
Redhook was born out of the entrepreneurial spirit of early 1980s in the heart of Seattle. While the term didn’t exist at the time, Redhook became one of America’s first craft breweries with its focus on creating a better beer. From a modest start in a former transmission shop in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard, to a Fremont trolley barn that housed The Trolleyman brewpub, to its current breweries in Seattle, Wash., and Portsmouth, N.H., Redhook has become one of America’s most recognized craft breweries. Redhook opened a 10-barrel brewpub in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle in 2017.

Redhook’s 2018 lineup includes Big Ballard IIPA, Bicoastal IPA and a variety of seasonal beers, including My Oh My Caramel Macchiato Milk Stout, Tangelic Halo Tangerine IPA, Winterhook, and more. Redhook beers are available on draught and in bottles and cans around the country.

Redhook's Capitol Hill BrewLab To Open Aug 17th.

Courtesy of Redhook Brewery
SEATTLE – July 11, 2017 – Redhook Brewery is opening the doors of its new brewery and pub, called Redhook Brewlab, in the Pike Motorworks Building at 714 E. Pike Street in Capitol Hill on August 17, 2017

A Grand Opening Party with Redhook’s radio partner KEXP will take place on August 17 from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., with live music and a one-of-a-kind taplist featuring 16 collaboration beers brewed with some of Redhook’s friends in the industry.

The Beer
Redhook Brewlab will feature 16 taps of rotating small-batch beers, brewed on site by Redhook Head Brewer Nick Crandall, an eight-year brewing veteran who has spent his time at Redhook focused on innovation and new beer development, including two pub-favorite IPAs in Redhook’s line-up, the reformulated Big Ballard Imperial IPA and the hazy Bicoastal IPA.

Crandall will bring his recipe ideas to life at Redhook Brewlab through a state-of-the-art eight-barrel brewhouse. The brewhouse is a High Efficiency Brewing System (HEBS), which is unique in that it uses a mash filter instead of a lauter tun, enabling significant water and grain conservation, quicker brewing times, and easier batch-to-batch turnover. The flexibility and efficiency of the brewhouse will allow Crandall to experiment with a wide variety of beer styles and recipes, and brew more than 100 different small-batch beers every year.

Redhook Brewlab is a beer-focused working space. The brewery will be a test ground to experiment and create new small-batch beers primarily for the pub, and to develop recipes that will eventually come to life on a wider scale in Washington and beyond. Examples include Crandall’s new Bicoastal IPA, and a few others planned for 2018: My Oh My Caramel Macchiato Milk Stout, Mothers of the Sun Raspberry Saison, Peaches for Me IPA brewed with peach and mango, and Tangelic Halo Tangerine IPA.

“Redhook was built on experimentation and taking risks back in the early 80s,” said Crandall. “Redhook Brewlab will allow us to experiment and test brewing boundaries, as well as get feedback directly from our guests. We’ll see what works and what might not. Ultimately, the next generation of Redhook’s core and seasonal beers will be born at Brewlab.”

With the launch of Brewlab, Redhook is also introducing its new Washington Native series, a rotating line-up of house IPAs that will feature ingredients exclusively sourced from the State of Washington. The Washington Native series will be a permanent fixture at Redhook Brewlab, and Crandall plans to brew the first release in the series with ingredients from two of his favorite sources, hops from Roy Farms in Moxee, Wash., and malts from Skagit Valley Malting in Burlington, Wash.

The Space
Redhook Brewlab’s concept is an intersection of Seattle history and culture, a place where the city’s eclectic influences mix – art, science, brewing, food, and music.

Housed within the Pike Motorworks Building, Brewlab’s space is an open modern brewery and pub concept with an abundance of natural light. Large skylight windows above the front entrance on Pike street saturate the main bar and seating area with light, and floor-to-ceiling windows between the pub and brewery space give patrons a close-up view of the latest small-batch beers being brewed.

Redhook Brewlab space was designed by Graham Baba Architects and Arup Engineering, and brought to life by R|Miller Inc. Construction. The space and menu concept were created with input from famed Seattle restaurateurs James Weimann and Deming Maclise, who intentionally worked to emphasize the industrial features of the Pike Motorworks space while incorporating historic elements such as a 1930s bar salvaged from a Greyhound Bus Station in Soap Lake, Wash., and vintage lighting fixtures.

A focal point inside the brewpub is a custom mural by Grammy-nominated Seattle illustrator and Sub Pop Records Art Director Sasha Barr. The prominent mural on the wall near the front bar is a colorful collage celebrating the city, people, beer, architecture, and the neighborhood.

Large patios in the front and back of the space increase the seating capacity from 171 to 258, making Redhook Brewlab’s total outdoor patio space the largest in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The back patio features two firepits for a cozy beer drinking experience, and both patios will be open as weather allows.

In addition to developing Redhook’s latest small-batch beers, Crandall will take the lead on the music front, playing music from his extensive collection of vinyl records for guests to enjoy while he’s brewing beer. There are also plans to ramp up a local live music program, with an ongoing series of shows held at Redhook Brewlab.

The Food
Redhook Brewlab will offer a specially curated menu featuring ingredients from local Seattle purveyors. While the heart of the brewery is the eight-barrel brewing system, the heart of the kitchen is a stone-hearth oven from WoodStone in Bellingham, Wash.

From Executive Chef Adam Stevens: “I’d describe the menu concept as unabashedly good bar food, the kind of food we like to eat while drinking great beer. Our stone-hearth oven, the seasons, and local ingredients will dictate the menu, which will rotate throughout the year. In this way, the food aligns with our beers -- we won’t limit ourselves, we’ll be experimental, and we’ll always be having fun.”

Redhook Releases Bicoastal: A Hazy New England/West Coast IPA

Courtesy of Redhook Brewery
SEATTLE – July 7, 2017 – Redhook Brewery today announced the release of Bicoastal IPA, a mash up between a hazy New England IPA and a west coast IPA.

The hazy New England-style IPA is taking both coasts by storm. Redhook Brewery has a unique perspective on the trend, having a presence in both Washington and New Hampshire. The Redhook brewing team wanted to highlight the best of both coasts, and after experimenting with the style created Bicoastal IPA, which takes India Pale Ale style cues from both coasts.

Bicoastal IPA captures the signature haze, creamy body, and ripe tropical fruit notes of a New England IPA, and blends signature dank hops and rich maltiness found in classic west coast IPAs. The hazy IPA is the first beer in Redhook’s Limited Release Series, which features the best and brightest new small-batch and experimental beers from Redhook Innovation Brewer Nick Crandall’s recipe books.

“Bicoastal is inspired by the IPAs coming out of New England, but with a little bit of a west coast twist,” said Crandall, who created this unique beer. “Given that we have a brewery in New Hampshire, we really had to nail this one. Bicoastal has the signature hazy appearance and a really smooth mouthfeel with a huge tropical fruit aroma. Then we gave it a dank dry hopping synonymous with a west coast IPA.”

Bicoastal IPA will be available exclusively in Seattle as part of the Redhook Limited Release Series, which is inspired by the counter culture of the city: music, water, mountains, art, coffee, and design. Each beer features original artwork from local Seattle artists. Seattle-based designer, art director, and screen printer Derek Vander Griend created the artwork for Bicoastal, featuring the legendary sea creature, the kraken.

Redhook's Iconic Blackhook Porter Returns For Spring

Courtesy of Redhook Brewery
SEATTLE, WASH. – January 26, 2017 – Redhook Brewery is bringing back its iconic Blackhook Porter, long a favorite of dark beer fans, as its 2017 spring seasonal. Blackhook is one of the original recipes developed by the pioneering Seattle brewery nearly 34 years ago.
Blackhook was Redhook’s second beer in the early 1980’s, and has been part of the Redhook lineup on-again and off-again ever since. Blackhook remains a staple in the Redhook portfolio because it has a rich, malty backbone of roasted chocolate malts and Apollo hops. The result is a hit of bitterness and a resiny, spicy finish. Longtime favorite will be widely available as Redhook’s spring seasonal. Redhook Innovation Brewer Nick Crandall loves Blackhook’s versatility so much that he is also experimenting with different versions of the beer, including Blackhook variations brewed with ingredients like coffee beans, cocoa nibs, vanilla, and chocolate. These and other specialty renditions will be available on tap at Redhook’s Woodinville pub and at select bar and restaurant locations in Seattle beginning in February.
“Blackhook is a cool part of our history and before we brought it into our seasonal lineup last spring, it was one of the most requested beers by Redhook beer drinkers,” Crandall said. “The beer is definitely a standard in our lineup but it’s also a great beer to experiment with. I’ve been playing with different versions like coffee and coca nib, vanilla and chocolate that we’ll be tapping throughout the spring.”
Blackhook Porter is part of Redhook’s seasonal lineup which also includes Summerhook Golden Ale and Winterhook Dark Ale. Blackhook is currently available in 12-ounce bottles (both six- and 12- packs and as part of Redhook’s Hook Pack variety pack) and on draft. Brewer Nick Crandall, will unveil several variations of the porter at the brewery’s Woodinville pub starting in February. Additional info about these specialty tappings will be posted to Redhook’s Facebook page and website.

“Our American Pale Ale is a classic take on the style,” said Nick Crandall, lead innovation brewer at Redhook Brewery. “We wanted to brew a pale ale with pronounced citrus and floral hop aromas. Redhook’s take on the American Pale Ale style integrates classic Chinook and Cascade hop characters into this easy-drinking and full-flavored pale ale. Redhook's Original Blackhook Porter Returns With A Fresh New Look

Courtesy of Redhook Brewery
SEATTLE, WASH. – January 19, 2016 Redhook Brewery announced today that it will release its original Blackhook Porter, the iconic dark beer that helped pave the way for Redhook to become one of America’s first craft breweries more than 30 years ago, as the brewery’s new spring seasonal.

Born at the original Redhook Brewery in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood in 1983, Blackhook Porter has been a favorite of dark beer fans ever since. While Blackhook has been brewed on and off again for more than three decades, this year’s release marks the first time in years that the beer will be available nationally in bottles and on draught.

Blackhook Porter returns with a bold new label inspired by heritage Redhook beers, designed to pay tribute to Redhook’s history and strong Seattle roots. Blackhook is the first release in an updated series of three seasonal beers that Redhook will brew in the coming year, and the first beer in the brewery’s portfolio to feature the revamped heritage labels.

Blackhook is one of the quintessential Redhook beers that helped change our direction as a craft brewery in Seattle in the early 80s,” said Nick Crandall, lead innovation brewer for Redhook Brewery. “After the original Redhook Ale, which many remember as ‘Banana Beer’ was released, the brewers were asked to create a second, better beer, and Blackhook was the answer.”

With the goal of creating something different for the brewery’s second release in 1983, Redhook’s brewers ditched the banana esters of the Redhook Ale and introduced dark roast malt characters and a cleaner yeast character to create Blackhook. The beer earned a reputation for converting dark beer skeptics into dark beer fans, and its popularity helped pave the way for a variety of other Redhook classics like ESB and Winterhook.

Many local beer lovers have fond memories of Blackhook. Manny Chao, local brewer and co-founder of Seattle’s Georgetown Brewing Company reminisces about his first Blackhook in 1991. “I remember I was a student at UW and Blackhook Porter was the first beer I fell in love with. It changed my life… and my liver,” said Chao.

Blackhook has a rich malty backbone with caramel sweetness that compliments the smooth roasted malt character that creates a well-balanced porter. A revival of the traditional London-style, top-fermented porter, Blackhook’s roasted malts deliver coffee and chocolate characteristics balanced with hoppy bitterness.

“The velvety texture and smooth finish make Blackhook a favorite of dark beer fans,” said Crandall. “It’s also a fantastic beer to pair with dessert. Blackhook porter float, anyone?”

Blackhook hits shelves nationally in 12-ounce bottles this month and will be available in six packs, 12-packs and as part of Redhook’s “Foursome” variety 12 pack. The beer is also available on draught.

About Redhook
Redhook was born out of the energy and spirit of the early 1980s in the heart of Seattle. While the term didn’t exist at the time, Redhook became one of America’s first craft breweries with its focus on creating “better beers.” From a modest start in a former transmission shop in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard to a Fremont trolley barn that housed The Trolleyman brewpub, to its current breweries in Woodinville, Wash., and Portsmouth, N.H., Redhook has become one of America’s most recognized craft breweries. Redhook will open a 10-barrel brewpub in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle in the fall of 2016.

While Redhook has “grown up” over the past 30 years, one thing has never changed — Redhook is still brewing great beers like ESB, Long Hammer IPA, Audible Pale Ale and a variety of seasonal beers. Most importantly, Redhook has fun doing it. Redhook beers are available on draught and in bottles and cans around the country. For more information, visit www.redhook.com.
