Hopworks Urban Brewery and New Belgium Brewing Spin New Take on Fat Tire Amber Ale for Brewer’s 25th Anniversary

Five collaborative Fat Tire riff beers available
 in mixed 12-packs throughout summer

Ft. Collins, Colo., May 31, 2016 - Hopworks Urban Brewery and New Belgium have teamed up to create Fat Sour Apple Ale, a lacto sour ale using Pacific Northwest apples to highlight that green apple snap inherent to the original Fat Tire. The beer will be available alongside four other collaborative versions of Fat Tire in a mixed 12-pack to celebrate New Belgium’s 25th anniversary this summer.

The two brewers have a long history of comradery and mutual respect. When New Belgium decided to celebrate their 25th  anniversary through collaboration, the idea was to look at an American craft classic through the lens of other brewers who have inspired the better beer movement. HUB quickly rose to the top of the list.

"New Belgium and Fat Tire were inspirations for me when I started Hopworks.  Their commitment to the environment and sustainable practices, while producing high-quality, delicious beer is a model we all should embrace," said Christian Ettinger, Brewmaster and Founder of Hopworks. "Fat Tire is one of the classics of craft beer. Smooth, rich and flavorful, Fat Tire helped pave the way for generations of brewers and beers we enjoy today."

For New Belgium the joy was collaborating with brewers they appreciate and admire.

“We’ve got a ton of respect for Christian and everyone over at HUB,” said New Belgium Brewer, Cody Reif. “They have set the standard as to organic and sustainable brewing processes and they make kickass beers. It’s been great fun working together and what they’ve brought to the original Fat highlights the best of the original and takes it to a whole other level.”

In addition to Fat Sour Apple Ale, the mixed 12-pack will feature a beer from Allagash Brewing using a Belgian yeast sourced from the Poperinge region and a touch of the Allagash house Brettanomyces; Avery will focus on a fruitier hop bill also with a dose of brett evoking notes of apricot and pineapple; Firestone Walker is creating a west coast interpretation of Fat Tire with an assertive hop profile and a light lager yeast; and Rhinegeist has transformed Fat Tire into a Belgian XPA, combining a fruity Belgian yeast strain with bready-sweet European and Colorado malts for a beer to please hopheads and wine drinkers alike.

Mixed 12-packs will feature two New Belgium original Fat Tire Amber Ales plus two of each interpretation beer. The beer will release mid-June, prior to New Belgium’s 25th anniversary, officially on June 28th. A party at New Belgium’s new brewery in Asheville on August 27th will celebrate that facility’s grand opening as well as 25 years of brewing innovation and good times.

Detroit Bikes to build nearly 2,500 custom New Belgium cruiser bikes,
doubling US-based bike builders’ workforce

Ft. Collins, Colo. – April 20, 2016 – For the first time ever, New Belgium Brewing is producing its coveted special edition cruiser bikes in the U.S., using Detroit Bikes, a Detroit-based bicycling manufacturer and North America’s largest bicycle producer. Just in time for warmer weather, the bikes are now hitting the streets through New Belgium fundraisers, giveaways and as one-year anniversary gifts to New Belgium co-workers. The partnership has created new manufacturing jobs in Detroit with the company doubling its workforce from 20 to 40 employees.

“As I started to think about production and making bikes back in 2011, Detroit was the best place to look,” noted Zak Pashak, Founder and President of Detroit Bikes. “Detroit has such a rich history of production and certainly we’ve benefited greatly with a skilled local workforce. This partnership is hugely exciting because it marks a big shift in the industry and an amazing show of support for American bike manufacturing.”

Detroit Bikes will produce about 2,500 cruiser bikes during this first year. So far about 1,000 bikes have been released, with about 40 bikes going out a day.

“Bikes are a big part of our history and culture so partnering with Detroit Bikes just made sense in every way,” said New Belgium Brewing Bike Designer, Ryan McKee. “Zak first reached out to us and we were inspired by his vision. We’ve been looking to source U.S. made bikes for some time, which isn’t easy at scale. We now get to work with a U.S. bike manufacturer to produce thousands of bikes, while also giving an economic boost to Detroit.”

Fat Tire Flowing from New Belgium’s Asheville Brewery

Courtesy of New Belgium Brewing CO
Asheville, NC - April 4, 2016 New Belgium Brewing’s flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale is flowing from their Asheville brewery and heading toward draft lines and cold boxes across the eastern United States. With production ramping up over the next few years, the 500,000 barrel capacity, 127,000 square-foot brewery gives the country’s fourth-largest craft brewer 1.5 million barrels of total capacity.
“This is truly a proud moment for all of us here at New Belgium,” said Christine Perich, New Belgium President and CEO. “Over the last 25 years, we have grown from a basement operation to a state-of-the-art brewery with homes on both sides of the country. So many folks have leaned in and helped along the way, we’d love to just take a moment and raise a glass to say ‘thank you’.”

New Belgium Brewing started in the basement of a Fort Collins, Colorado home in 1991 and this year will mark the companys 25th anniversary. The Asheville brewery will focus on producing Fat Tire, while also flavor matching test brews for Ranger IPA and 1554 to finish commissioning the Asheville brewery. They will ramp up brands based on demand. The east coast locale minimizes their distribution footprint and enables the brewery to engage with guests in a meaningful way through tastings and tours.
“In my two decades working with New Belgium, Fat Tire has never tasted so satisfying,” said Asheville Brewing Manager Alex Dwoinen, reflecting on the accomplishment. Sipping Asheville brewed Fat Tire in Asheville will definitely be added as one of my best Fat Tire memories.”

New Belgium’s Latest Hop Kitchen Release, Botanical Imperial IPA, Blossoms With Spring Flavor

Courtesy of New Belgium Brewing CO
Ft. Collins, Colo., March 22, 2016 – Using the fresh aroma of the spring landscape as inspiration, New Belgium Brewing’s Botanical Imperial IPA uses a blast of essential oils from backyard botanicals. Basil, sage and juniper help create the freshest IPA around, with Bravo, Cascade, Sterling, and Willamette hop varieties delivering a potent hop punch.

“The essential oils intensify the citrusy, herbal and spicy hop flavors,” noted Ross Koenigs, New Belgium Pilot Brewer. “The idea for a botanical IPA came from our love of both IPAs and gin. So back in 2014, we had our hop chemist run a bunch of gin botanicals alongside different hop varieties and then we started beta testing how those different herbs and spices played with the hops. The result offers notes of citrus, pine, wood, cedar, mint, and a little spice.”

Botanical Imperial IPA comes in at 8.5% ABV with 85 IBUs. It is available on draft now through mid-April. To learn more about the science behind it, check out - https://youtu.be/A94BufiDIyY.

New Belgium, Fat Tire and Friends Celebrate 25 Years with Collaborative Fat Tire “Riff-Pack”

Courtesy of New Belgium Brewing CO
New Belgium partners with esteemed brew buddies to reimagine flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale

Ft. Collins, Colo., March 1, 2016 – New Belgium Brewing celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of five collaboration beers reinterpreting the brewer’s flagship, Fat Tire Amber Ale. Fat Tire was first conceived on a bike ride through Belgium and came to life as a homebrew in the late 1980’s. Spurred on by accolades from friends and a grip of homebrewing awards, New Belgium co-founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch took the beer commercial in 1991. Since then, the 100% employee-owned company has become the nation’s 4th-largest craft brewery with distribution in 41 states and a second brewery just opening in Asheville, NC. New Belgium brewers teamed up with brewing friends at Allagash Brewing Company (Portland, ME), Avery Brewing (Boulder, Colo.), Firestone Walker (Paso Robles, CA), Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland, OR) and Rhinegeist Brewery (Cincinnati, OH) for the project.

“In the early days we used to say that if we could just sell 60 cases of beer a week we’d be a success,” said co-founder, Kim Jordan. “It’s a different landscape these days yet the things that make our work meaningful - community, camaraderie, creativity – are still alive and well. Working with so many great friends and talented brewers while reimagining Fat Tire is the perfect way to celebrate all the things we love most about our craft.”

New Belgium reached out to collaboration partners who were long time friends and innovative brewers. For the mixed 12-pack, Allagash is producing a version of Fat Tire using a Belgian yeast sourced from the Poperinge region and a touch of the Allagash house Brettanomyces – expect notes of stone fruit, sweet tart and peppercorn; Avery will focus on a fruitier hop bill also with a dose of brett evoking notes of apricot and pineapple; Firestone Walker is creating a west coast interpretation of Fat Tire with an assertive hop profile and a light lager yeast; Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) is creating a tart Fat Tire bringing in apple and lactobacillus to help highlight that beautiful green apple snap inherent to the original Fat Tire; and Rhinegeist has transformed Fat Tire into a Belgian XPA, combining a fruity Belgian yeast strain with bready-sweet European and Colorado malts for a beer to please hopheads and wine drinkers alike.

New Belgium Brewing Once Again Named Platinum-Level Bicycle Friendly BusinessSM
by the League of American Bicyclists
In the brewery’s nearly 25-year history it has awarded more than $4 million for bicycle advocacy

Ft. Collins, Colo., – February 18, 2016 Bicycle advocacy has been part of New Belgium Brewing’s core from day one and as the brewery prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the League of American Bicyclists has once again recognized New Belgium as a platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBSM). Platinum is the highest honor awarded.

“As a brewery founded on a bike ride ride through Belgium, bike advocacy is part of our DNA so this is a tremendous honor,” said Bryan Simpson, New Belgium’s public relations director. "Making the world a more bike-friendly place is core to our mission, from giving every co-worker a cruiser bike on their one-year anniversary, to including bike advocacy in our grants program and Tour de Fat.”

With the announcement of 73 new and renewing Bike Friendly Businesses, New Belgium joins a forward-thinking group of 1,132 businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies in 49 states and Washington, D.C., that are transforming the American workplace.

“The business community’s investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,” said Amelia Neptune, League Bicycle Friendly Business Program Manager. “We applaud this new round of businesses, including New Belgium, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”

Bicycle Friendly Businesses are corporations, organizations, nonprofits and associations that weave bicycling into their business culture and give employees and customers the opportunity to be active stewards of their personal and environmental health through bicycling. When bicycling is infused in an office or company culture, great things happen: reduced health care costs; more productive employees; improved worker and customer satisfaction; smaller carbon footprint; and increased corporate social responsibility.
